WelCome to the 2017 Filter photo FeStival!

FILTERPHOTO.ORG

This program is a guide to the 9th Annual Filter Photo Festival. In the center you will find the daily schedule of workshops, artist talks, and evening programming. We’ve also included a map of venues for events taking place outside of the Festival hotel. With so many events planned there is plenty to keep you deeply engaged with your practice over the next four days. We are excited to welcome San Francisco-based artist John Chiara as this year’s keynote speaker with the support of Columbia College Chicago’s Photography Department. Don’t miss his engaging talk on Friday, September 22 at 7pm.

The Festival Lounge is a great place to connect with friends and colleagues, share work and get caught up. We also have a few Roaming Reviewers this year, check the schedule at the Registration table and stop by to talk about your work with one of these talented professionals. It’s also a place where you can learn about a variety of resources to support your creative and professional goals through our Festival sponsors.

We’ve included a listing of exhibitions taking place around town during the Festival and we encourage you to get out and explore the photography community of Chicago.

We’re kicking off the Festival at Filter Photo headquarters with the opening receptions for three exhibitions – Deception, we like small things, and our first members’ exhibition, Prime. Join us on Thursday, September 21st at Filter Space in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood to celebrate these exhbitions and the start of the 9th Annual Filter Photo Festival.

Thank you for joining us, we hope you have an excellent Festival experience!

WorKShopSthUrSDaY, September 21 9:00 am-4:00 pm   Getting Seen, Getting Shown: Professional Practices for the Fine Art Photographer with Sasha Wolf and Jess T. DuganMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

More than ever before, being an artist requires not only producing compelling work, but also possessing the professional skills necessary to get your work seen, shown, and collected. In this day-long workshop, dealer Sasha Wolf and artist Jess T. Dugan will provide an overview of the skills required to build and maintain a career as a fine art photographer in today’s multifaceted and ever-changing art world. This is a rare chance to not only learn what today’s standards are regarding best practices but also to participate in a genuine dialogue between an artist and a dealer.

This workshop is ideal for photographers looking to gain insight into professional aspects of the art world.

FriDaY, September 229:00 am-4:00 pm The Portrait with Rania MatarMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

In this workshop, Rania will explore all aspects of portraiture and delve into the process of working with people. Participants will learn attention to detail, postures and expressions, approaching potential subjects, establishing trust and developing a relationship. She will discuss working through the entire process and all of the details of creating a great portrait and working with people.

9:30 am-4:00 pm The Salt Print with Dan Estabrook Columbia College Chicago 600 S. Michigan Ave. 10th FloorSponsored by Columbia College Chicago Photography Department

A full-day workshop exploring this 19th-century printing process draws from the very beginnings of photography on paper, from the early “Photogenic Drawings” of William H. F. Talbot to the later advancements in the process. Participants will dive right in, making photograms on plain salted paper, then work their way up to gelatin-sized and toned prints.

SatUrDaY, September 239:00 am-4:00 pm Constructing Images with Kimberly WithamMillennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

Constructed photographs can range from arranging objects for a still life to elaborate collages or montages as well as many other studio-based practices. In this full day workshop with artist Kimberly Witham, participants will learn long-term strategies for pursuing and completing a successful project with constructed imagery.

Kimberly will discuss the history of the still life and constructed image in painting and photography as well as highlight the work of contemporary artists working in this manner. She will also share her own creative process and approach, from sketches to finished pieces, in addition to discussing her own home-based studio and equipment. topics to discuss include lighting, composition, subject matter, and overall creative vision.

SUNDaY, September 24 9:00 am-4:00 pm Finding the Words with Kat Kiernan Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

Producing a strong photographic body of work is a tremendous accomplishment, but without good writing and editing skills, photographers may face difficulty connecting with galleries, curators, critics, or even their own website visitors. In this one-day workshop, Kat will teach participants how to enhance their professional practice through writing. Not your typical “how to” writing workshop, this workshop will focus on the many instances in which photographers are asked to write about their work including press statements, interviews, newsletter content, and artist biographies. This workshop will help participants hone their writing skills and leave with a broader understanding of the contemporary photography market.

9:00 am-12:00 pm Working Across Fine Art & Commercial Photography with Sabrina Y. Smith Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

In a time where the boundaries between art, fashion, and music are blurring, the line between fine art and commercial photography is thinning and the two fields are no longer mutually exclusive.

In this half-day workshop, Sabrina Y. Smith, will review the ways commissioned work can complement your fine art practice, offering new avenues of creativity, a wider audience, and financial freedom.

12:30 pm-2:00 pm

FriDaY, September 2212:00 pm-1:00 pm Alejandro T. Acierto Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

Alejandro T. Acierto will discuss his recent body of work that draws on the photographic and ephemeral archive from the era of US colonialism in the Philippines as a way to theorize and reimagine historically marginalized bodies through the history of their erasure.

1:00 pm-2:00 pm Sara J. Winston Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

Sara J. Winston will discuss her practice and 2017 book project published with Candor Arts, A Lick and a Promise, in which family portraits, landscapes, photographs of objects, and writing by the author and her father outline the impact of chronic inter-generational illness within her family. Book signing to follow.

7:00 pm-8:30 pm John Chiara Columbia College Chicago 618 S. Michigan Ave.

Festival Keynote SpeakerSponsored by Columbia College Chicago Photography Department

Chiara creates one-of-a-kind photographs in a variety of hand-built cameras, the largest of which is a 50 x 80 field camera that he transports on a flatbed trailer. Once he selects a location, he situates, and then physically enters the camera, and maneuvers in near total darkness a sheet of positive color photographic paper onto the camera’s back wall. The resulting photographs are strongly perceptual, rendered in soft hues with a strong sense of the viscosity of material and the ephemerality of place.

SatUrDaY, September 2312:00 pm-1:00 pm Ronit Porat Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

Ronit Porat’s work explores the physicality of historical periods through their traces and leftovers. This engagement with other historical terrains starts in a circular motion that begins with the personal, shifts to the collective and then returns to the self. In doing so, she considers the ways in which images resonate with memory and belonging.

Loyola University Museum of Art 820 N. Michigan Ave.

Join photographer Jeffrey Wolin and Catherine Edelman, Owner and Director of Catherine Edelman Gallery, as they lead a gallery talk and tour of Wolin’s Pigeon Hill: Then and Now exhibition at Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA).

SUNDaY, September 2412:00 pm-1:00 pm Professionalizing the Artist Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel 163 E. Walton Pl.

This panel of current students of photography and emerging artists will share their experiences balancing risk-taking in their personal work with the pressures to simultaneously provide a professional context for their efforts. The panelists will explore a wide range of ways to participate in art communities and navigate the pressures to professionalize. Join us for a lively discussion with Clarissa Bonet, Carly Ries, Guanyu Xu, and moderated by Aimée Beaubien.
