Rabbi’s Table by Rabbi Ita Paskind

Shalom Chaverim, Dear friends,

The cycle of our Jewish year begins to draw to a close and a new year —5777— beckons us. And what a difference one year makes. Last summer, I couldn’t find Stew Leonard’s without my GPS, my house and office were filled with boxes, and it scared me to drive to Weston at night (OK, I admit, that last one hasn’t changed). Most importantly, this has been a year of getting to know and love our shul community, and I very much look forward to celebrating Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur with each of you, now knowing your names and your faces, having celebrated and mourned with many of you throughout 5776.

We have much to look forward to in the coming year — please be on the lookout for the Beth El Programs 5777 brochure on Rosh HaShanah — but I want to introduce 2 very special components of our holidays this fall.

First, a new mahzor. Through the tre-mendous generosity of several families in our congregation, we are purchas-ing the Conservative Movement’s new-est High Holiday prayerbook, Mahzor Lev Shalem. Like our new siddur, this mahzor is extremely user-friendly — lots of transliteration, tons of beautiful and inviting commentary, and a great new font. I can’t wait for you to let yourself float between the service and

get lost in the margins. This is a wonderful gift for our community, with thanks to the families who brought the mahzor to us, including Gerald & Elaine Rosenberg, Gary & Susan Singer, Andrew Moss & Caryn Siegel Moss, Marc & Sharon Rosen, David & Lindsey Rossen, Abram Heisler & Riva Silverman, Stephen & Linda Stein and Jim & Laura Sugarman.

And second, lay-led services. As you know, our congregation prides itself on the skills and talents of our members throughout the year. How wonderful it is to know the person standing before us and to know that they care deeply for us as well. Following in that tradition, a handful of talented Beth El members have spent this year studying the liturgy and melodies of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, and they will lead us on these holiest of days.

Please enjoy this small window into the hearts and souls of three of our daveners:

“For me, the best part about leading services is when everyone sings (or hums – that’s fine too!). I find it moving and powerful

when everyone stops for a brief period of time and focuses on singing together. To me, that’s when our community really goes ‘l’elah, l’elah’ – higher and higher.” — David Loewenberg (Maariv, Musaf, and Neilah on Yom Kippur)

“I grew up in a German Jewish community, where the melodies, while different than other Ashkenazi communities, are beautiful and nostalgic. I look forward to sharing many of them here.” — Marguerite Felsenfeld (Shacharit on Yom Kippur)

“The davening at any time seems that you personally are connecting with G’d and at the same time you are also a conduit to G’d for the Congregation as well. It is a good feeling, especially when all join in singing the prayers.” — Marvin Rosenbaum (Pesukei d’Zimra – the early prayers – Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur)

As you can see, High Holidays 5777 have been in the making for months, and I look forward to spending them with you. I wish each of us a happy and a sweet new year.

President’s Greeting by Sharon DeFala

On Friday night June 17th we were fortunate once again to gather at the waterfront home of Sandy Levy and Joe Brachfeld as we welcomed Shabbat and shared a lovely meal generously donated by our hosts while our kids played in the sand and our Rabbi led us on her guitar. What a blessing for us all to share in the beauty and spirituality of the evening. This year, in addition to honoring our graduating high school seniors, we honored our volunteers from the past year. Below are my comments from that evening.

THE LONG FLIGHT By Yaakov Astor, Rabbi, Principal, Author

A businessman has just purchased property in Australia. The next day someone makes him an offer for ten million dollars more than he paid. He can literally make ten million dollars overnight! But there’s one catch: He has to personally be in Australia within the next day and a half or the deal is off. A flight to Australia takes roughly 25 hours and there’s only one flight out of the local airport. If he misses that flight he’ll never make it. He rushes to the airport, runs up to the ticket office and says, barely catching his breath, “I need a ticket.”

“Sorry, everything is sold out.”

Undaunted, he approaches the manager, puts $20,000 in cash on the table and says, “I MUST be on that flight, no matter what! Put me in the bathroom. I don’t care! But I must be on that plane.”

The manager takes the money, calls the head steward and says, “Take this man, put him in the bathroom and keep your mouth shut.”

On the same flight is passenger B, who’s a billionaire. Every day millions are coming into his bank account and he doesn’t know how to get rid of it fast enough. But he’s miserable. His wife just threw him out of his house. His family has disowned him. He feels no affection for anyone. And no one feels affection for him.

Then he gets an idea: “Let me buy a ticket on a long-distance flight and get pampered for a few days.” He buys a first class ticket, gets red-carpet service, and lets everyone know he has money to burn. For every glass of champagne he gives a $100 dollar bill for a tip. All the stewardesses buzz around him. He’s the most doted upon passenger in the world.

Imagine asking other passengers on the plane who they think is the happiest passenger on this flight and who’s the most miserable. At first glance, the happiest guy seems to be the rich fellow laughing it up in first class, and the most miserable is the guy stuck in the bathroom.

Of course the truth is the exact opposite. What makes the guy in the bathroom the happiest passenger and the guy in first class the most miserable?

The guy in the bathroom is going somewhere important to him. He knows why he’s on the plane. He’s willing to make any sacrifice to be on the flight. The guy in first class, on the other hand, has no destination, no purpose. It doesn’t matter how much he’s enjoying the temporary conditions, deep down he’s the most miserable person on the plane.

We’re all on a flight. Some of us fly seventy years, some eighty, some ninety. But it’s going to end one day. Some of us distract our minds and kill time. Some of us struggle to acquire a nicer seat. But only if we find a purpose to this flight and do something about it will we find true happiness._______________________________________________

Much like the man with a purpose on the Rabbi’s flight, our volunteers have found meaning on their “flights” in doing good deeds for our shul. Some volunteer for us as well as for other organizations, sharing the wealth of their commitments and generosity; some commit all of their volunteer efforts exclusively to us. Some have an annual event where they give their time, others drop in and out as the need and time coincide, some work tirelessly all year long, for years which turn into decades.

For all of them – we are truly grateful. We are a shul and a congregation, but before and after we are any of those things we are a community of volunteers. The vitality that we feel when we are together comes from our joint sense of purpose, our connections in being together on this flight.

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers.

Thank you to our siddur transition team:Andrew Moss and Marguerite Felsenfeld for

cataloguing and preserving the information about our outgoing siddurim, and Nancy Glater for personally plating every one of our new siddurim, and helping to

keep alive the memories of those who were so honored.

Navasky News by Al Treidel, Director of Education

We have just completed a very successful and exciting year and are already making plans for even more exciting learning adventures for our youngsters. One of the most sensational additions to our educational program has been the introduction of our Siddur website that our students can practice with while mastering a prayer. By introducing our Navasky Chants Its Way to Israel incentive program, our students were successful in learning four to five times as many lines of Siddur than they had the previous year. The final Sunday of school found our students at the Shelton Sports Center enjoying their collective reward for achieving such great success. This coming year, we will sponsor a Navasky Chants Its Way Back to Norwalk Challenge. Our website has been enhanced by the addition of lines of prayer interpretation and meaning edited by Rabbi Paskind along with enrichment Siddur enhancements for students who master our entire curriculum early. Rabbi Paskind has also added Torah and Haftorah Trope and various brachot. Many thanks to Rabbi Paskind for all of her special efforts to enhance our Siddur website. This website is available to all congregants who want to add to their synagogue skills.

I am also proud to announce the completion of a formal curriculum (grades K through 7) for our school. You can review any portion of the curriculum by going to the Beth El website. Among the additions are an ethics studies program for grades 5, 6 and 7.We have reorganized our history curriculum and have added genealogical studies as well. There are enhancements to our studies of holidays and Jewish life cycle. Formal Israel studies have been added to grade 7. These are just some of the additions and enhancements that you can read about. Over the next 2 years, we will be refining the curriculum as teachers work on implementation. The Hebrew/Siddur curriculum will see the greatest number of adjustments as teachers begin to work with students on the meaning of prayer. Another area of development will be the ethics curricula as teachers integrate ethics into class discussions. In the younger grades (Pre-K through grade 2), we will see the formal introduction of a Hebrew through Movement program that will enable younger children to learn Hebrew words through teacher-generated oral commands in Hebrew. Our new music teacher is also a trained Hebrew through Movement specialist. Finally, we are offering our 8th graders the fantastic opportunity to participate in a community-service oriented program and once a month adventures in exploring comparative Judaism and comparative religion. No Beth El 8th grader should miss this fantastic opportunity.

We are continuing our K’tanim Program for preschoolers ages 3 and above. It is holiday centered and for a token fee, young children can participate in this wonderful one Sunday a month

fun experience. Our K’tanim and kindergarten programs are open to both Beth El and non-Beth El families to enroll their youngsters. Please encourage friends and relatives to enroll their children in these terrific learning opportunities. We are accepting additional students on all grade levels. Please have them contact me at: 203-838-2710 or email me at [email protected].

This edition of the Bulletin contains important information relating to High Holiday youth activities. We will be offering programs and activities for children age 2 through 6th grade. We are also looking for teens grade 8 and above to help with these programs. If your teenager is interested in volunteering on the High Holidays, please ask them to contact me by September 1 by either calling or emailing me. The year 5777 will be the best and most exciting year yet for all of our students and their families.

Kol tuv, Al Treidel, Director of Education

Navasky Chants its Way to Israel Our Navasky Chants Its Way to Israel participants were treated to a free exciting and memorable day at Connecticut Sports Center, thanks to a generous gift by the Saffan family; including rides both ways on a luxury bus thanks to a generous donation by Jane Strohm, grandmother of Melanie and Nina Rutherford.

Thank you to our friends and supporters at El Al airlines for co-sponsoring Navasky Chants Its Way to Israel, and providing fabulous incentives to keep the kids chanting all year!

If you know any 2, 3 or 4 year old – let them know

about our wonderful Nitzan pre school.

Attention Beth El High School Families:

Free College Workshop

COLLEGE BOUNDSunday Afternoon, Sept. 18

1:00 – 3:15 pm in the Beth El Social Hall

For the second time in two years, Congregation Beth El will be offering a free college workshop to Congregation Beth El high schoolers in grades 9 – 12. This workshop will be open to the first 10 high school families that sign up.

The workshop will provide a solid understanding of the college search and admissions process and address ways that students can better prepare themselves for success in the college search. It will answer such questions as:

• What roles do grades and standardized test scores play in the college admissions process?• What types of extra-curricular activities may enhance a student’s chances of gaining admission

to colleges?• What important criteria should be included in the college search?• Are there important issues that Jewish students should explore when searching for the right colleges?• What strategies should a student employ in the college search and admissions process?• Are there ways that a student may enhance his/her candidacy for admission to various colleges

and universities?• What appropriate roles should parents and students assume in the college process?• When is the appropriate time for families to begin with the college process and is there a timeline?

There will be opportunities for your questions to be answered and by the end of the workshop you will have a good understanding of the college process. If there is significant interest, there will be two free follow-up workshops for students in interview and college essay writing skills.

The workshop will be led by Mr. Al Treidel who served as an independent educational consultant for 35 years assisting hundreds of students through the college search and admissions process.

Registration for this workshop will be on a first come/ first served basis and will be closed when the 10th family registers. To register, email the names of the workshop attendees to Mr. Al Treidel at [email protected].

Although it’s summer time, Nitzan Nursery School is in full swing. Our students have been attending our “Summer Fun” camp. Campers have been busy playing in sprinklers, getting wet with spray bottles, exploring at water tables, creating crafts, blowing bubbles… all sorts of summer time activities!!! Stop by camp and you will see how much fun the campers are having.

We have also been busy getting organized for our 2016-2017 school year. We already have many fun events on the calendar. We are so excited to get the ball rolling on another exciting year at Nitzan. If you have a talent you would like to share with the Nitzan children, please contact Morah Amy at [email protected]. Would you like to be a guest reader? We would love for you to come in and share your favorite childhood story with the children.

Don’t forget about our Watermelon Wednesdays in August from 9:30 – 10:00 on Nitzan’s playground. Morah Amy and Rabbi Paskind will be there —come by and check it out.

We still have some availability for the fall so please spread the word about our wonderful preschool.

Get Your High Holiday Pledges In NowCheck the mail – you will be receiving your High Holiday appeal letter mid-August. In the past Dr. Stephen Stein has stood up on the Bimah during Yom Kippur to announce we had 100% participation by the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee! What if this year he could stand up and announce that by the time Yom Kippur even begins, we have 100% participation from each and every congregant family? Why wait? The earlier pledges come in, the more value they have – for budgeting, scheduling and paying bills. Please, no matter what the size of your High Holiday contribution, make it as early as you can! Let this be the year that Dr. Stein says, “every member of our Beth El family has already contributed something to the High Holiday campaign.”

Ritual Committee High Holy Day Honors

Please do reply to your Honors Letter which should be in your mailbox in early September. Even if you choose not to accept your honor, it will help us to know your plans. The Honors Committee strives to recognize all congregants deserving of an honor. Please call the syna-gogue office and let us know of any omission.

Friendly Reminders…Your cooperation is needed to ensure a meaningful experience on these Holy Days. A few friendly reminders include:• Please bring your tickets and be prepared to show them to

the security guard at the door.• Please be courteous to our neighbors when parking on the

street.• All men, and all women who choose, should bring tallitot and

kippot. The synagogue only has a limited quantity of each. • Please do not save seats. It is unfair to your fellow

congregants who arrive early and are unable to find seats if so many are being saved.

• Please arrive early with your family to find your seats together.• Please follow the guidance of the ushers when entering the

Interesting High Holiday and Sukkot Customs

Rosh Hashanaho Light/bless candles in the evening prior to the start of the

holiday (Sunday, October 2)o Hear the sounding of the shofaro Foods:

• For the motzi, use a round challah to symbolize the King’s crown and the cycle of the year

• On all the holidays from Rosh Hashanah through Shemini Atzeret, dip your challah in honey

• Eat a piece of apple dipped in honey to symbolize your desire for a sweet year

• On the 2nd evening of Rosh Hashanah (Tuesday, October 4), eat a fruit that you have not yet eaten this season

o Wear a new article of clothingo Say the Shehechiyanu blessing after Kiddush, after eating

the new fruit, and after putting on new clotheso Bless one another by saying, “L’Shana tova tika-

teiv v’teichateim” to a man , “L’Shana tova tikateivi v’teichateimi” to a woman (May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year), or simply, “L’Shana tova”

o Recite the Tashlich service (Join Beth El on Monday, October 3 @ 1:00 PM) by a body of water and throw bread-crumbs into the water to symbolize casting off your sins. (This is usually done in the afternoon of the 1st day if it is not Shabbat; otherwise on the 2nd)

o Give charity before and after the holiday just as you ask G-d to deal charitably with you in the coming year

o Visit the graves of loved ones/other righteous people just before Rosh Hashanah or during the Days of Awe (Beth El’s Kever Avot Service at Memorial Park on Richards Avenue on Sunday, October 9)

Yom KippurThe rabbis long ago noted that a person can scale to the great-est heights on Yom Kippur, reaching to the level of angels. In fact, several of the widely adopted customs of Yom Kippur are based on midrashic works that compare Israel on Yom Kippur to the angels, because the people have repented and are free of sin. Like the ministering angels, on Yom Kippur, we:

o Forgo bodily pleasures and focus only on spiritual matterso Stand more frequently during services (angels cannot sit)o Wear white/a kittel (like the angels who are dressed in

white [Daniel 10:5])o Recite out loud the phrase, “Baruch Shem K’vod Mal-

chuto L’Olam Vaed.” (This is the second line of the Sh’ma that we say in a low voice every other day of the year)

o Are united in peace with each other

Sukkot:o Build a sukkah and live in it (e.g., eating, sleeping) as

much as possible (Leviticus 23:42)o Decorate the sukkah by hanging fruits, vegetables, New

Year’s cards, or artwork drawn by children. Invite guests to join you in the sukkah

o Wave the “4 species” which consists of a lulav (unopened palm branch), etrog (citron), hadassim (3 myrtle twigs) and aravot (2 willow twigs) (Leviticus 23:40)

o Rejoice throughout the holiday week (Deuteronomy 16:14)

o Light Holiday candles the first 2 evenings (Monday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 18)

o After lighting candles the first night, or after saying Kid-dush the first night, or the first time taking the 4 species or sitting in the sukkah, add the “Shehecheyanu” blessing

Harry Morgenthaler HonorAfter many years and innumerable hours of dedication, our beloved congregant and fund raiser extraordinaire Harry Morgenthaler has retired from his role as food card coordinator.

At the annual meeting of the congregation, VP Josh Lander honored him with a lifetime board membership. Here is an excerpt from Josh’s presentation:

As VP of Fundraising, one of the programs I oversee is our food certificate and gift card program. It is a vital part of our fundraising every year, raising over $18,000 this most recent fiscal year alone. Tonight we would like to give a very special volunteer recognition to Harry, an honor well deserved and a long time coming. As many of you know, Harry basically started this program from nothing, and has single handedly turned it into one of our synagogue’s most consistently profitable fundraisers year after year after year. The amount of hours he puts in a week on the program is almost unbelievable. It is truly a full time job. He is literally here and open for business 6 days a week (with only a required day off for Shabbat). And when he is not here, he is running to our many vendors to pick up more supply so when you come to him to purchase a gift card for any of the stores, he has it “in stock.” Or he is making deliveries to member’s homes. Or if he sees a regular customer who has not purchased in a while, he will call you and find out what you need.

It is only, and I truly mean this and it is indisputable, because of Harry’s bird dog nature, dedication, and hard work to this program that has made it succeed and continues to succeed as

it does. I have personally spoken to executive board members at several local synagogues in our area who have started and then ended similar programs and asked me how we do it. And my answer is always the same… “we have Harry.”

In addition to the food certificate program he is most known for, Harry is also a dedicated Minyanaire, a long-time member of the board of trustees, and someone that all of us look to for guidance and wisdom as a longstanding and important leader in our congregation. He is always there to volunteer to help with any event, fundraiser or project that I am running, and I know others will say the same.

I have known Harry (or I really say, Harry has known me) since I was a kid growing up here at Beth El. Through the years, I have had the pleasure and privilege to not only know Harry, but to have my own life and my family intertwined with the lives of his family. So it is with great pleasure that, on behalf of our president Sharon Oberst DeFala, and our executive committee, I have been asked to honor Harry for all his years of dedication, commitment and hard work for our synagogue with a lifetime board membership.

As a lifetime board member, Harry can choose to attend (or not to attend if he is smart) any and all board of trustee meetings as a voting member from this day forward.

(Upon which Harry received his third of three standing ovations that evening.)

Please contact Sheri Jacobson at 203-918-7010 or the Maccabi office at 203-487-0978 for more details!

The Nightingale ~ Kristin Hannah

September 8 7:30pm

In love we find out who we want to be.

In war we find out who we are.

FRANCE, 1939 In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others. With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

A Message from the Kitchen Committee

The Kitchen Committee needs your help. Every week, one or two congregants set up food for Beth El’s Friday night oneg and Shabbat morning kiddush, pro-viding two opportunities for congregants to come together as a community and “schmooze.” However, we need more vol-unteers to join the committee in order to lighten the work load of our core group.

It’s really easy. Since there’s no shopping involved, all a volunteer has to do is spend some time in the kitchen and plate the food to be served. You can do it alone or, even better, do it with a friend. It takes less time and it’s more fun. “Training” will be provided. Once you’re trained, you can sign up for dates that fit your schedule. Currently, the schedule calls for a com-mitment of once every three weeks. How-ever, the more volunteers we have, the longer the time between work days.

If you’re interested, please email me at [email protected].
