  • lowed, foreshadowing what some predict

    is an inevitable culture clash.

My kids had heard stories about this

place in the news and at school. So as we

approached and saw signs for Beit

    Shemesh, their curiosity was peaked.

Will we be attacked, one wanted to know.

Why dont those people follow the rule,

love your neighbor as yourself another

    asked.

On the drive we saw a womens bus and

a mens bus and even a gender segregat-

ed bus with women sitting in the back.

But standing in the field of flowers look-

ing out toward the red-tiled roofs of this

modern Israeli city, we were struck by its

beauty and tranquility. (Ok, I was struck.

    My kids were busy climbing.)

With news of internal strife and external

threats, it is easy to get discouraged, to

fear for Israels future. But here we stood

on a sunny spring day, admiring flowers

reborn after their long winter slumber.

And we couldnt help but be filled with

hope. Despite the complexity of Israeli

    society, despite the challenges that

    undoubtedly lay ahead, hope literally

    springs eternal.

Here the Holy Ark which had been cap-

tured by the ancient Philistines, passed by

this field near modern Beit Shemesh, on

its return to Jerusalem (1 Samuel 6).

Here, ruins of the worlds oldest iron

workshop (yes, I Googled it) rejoiced in

the play of young boys. Here in this val-

ley, a young David overcame the giant,

Goliath. And here, the Land herself,

reminded us of the possibility of renewal

as we read in the The Song of Songs on

Passover: Behold, the winter has ended,

the rain is gone and over. The flowers

appear on the land The fig tree puts

forth her green figs, and the vines in blos-

    som bring forth their fragrance.

As we gather on Pesah to drink the fruit

of the vine and to celebrate the Festival of

Spring, may we too sense the renewal of

hope in our personal lives, in the life of

our family and in our People.

    A week before we arrived,

    Israel received record

    amounts of rain. There was

    even snow in Jerusalem! And

    we thought we were leaving

Minnesota! When we arrived, evidence of the

rain was still apparent. Driving from the airport

up the hills towards Jerusalem, one could see the

rocks glistening in the sun- a sure sign of the

water seeping out of the stone.

On our first day in Israel, we decided to take

advantage of the arrival of spring. We were stay-

ing with family not far from an area known for its

wild flowers. These flowers bloom for only a few

weeks of the year so we headed out for a hike.

Cyclamen blanketed the floor of a pine forest

planted by JNF in memory of the Jews of

Byelorussia killed in the Shoah. The view, the

smells, the colors all stood in stark contrast to the

ugly history they commemorated. But what a

    striking tribute they made.

A little further on, we came to a large open field

spotted with red anemones. Esther and I strolled

through the meadow while our boys ran up and

around stone walls that looked like the founda-

    tion of a fortress.

What are the ruins? I asked the guard standing

next to the archaeological dig at the entrance to

the field. No idea, he said. Something

Biblical. Google it. Its called Tel Beit Shemesh.

There was a lot to unpack in that not-so-simple

answer: Israelis more familiar with modern tech-

    nology than the ancient history in their backyard;

a worker more interested in his mint tea than the

3000 year old ruins he was supposed to be guard-

ing. But what caught my attention was the name.

Over the last few months, Beit Shemesh has

become synonymous with religious extremism. It

symbolizes what many see as a culture clash

    between a growing ultra-Orthodox population

and secular Israelis. For years, the divide has

existed. But last winter, it erupted. A handful of

    ultra-Orthodox men attacked modern Orthodox

girls on their way to school for their supposedly

immodest dress. They cursed the girls and threw

rocks at them. A mass counter demonstration fol-

  • At three and a half years old,

    Connell McFadden has learned to

    say Afghanistan quite clearly

now. Thats a hard word for a pre-

schooler, but Connor has had a lot

of practice. Thats because his daddy, Sergeant First Class

Brian McFadden has been there since October of 2011.

At that time, Connells baby sister Vivien was only 1 year

old. She does not know her da da very well, but is excit-

ed when she sees and hears him on the Internet. The chil-

dren and their mother Rendina live in Bloomington.

Naturally, they are anxious for his safe

    return home.

Brian is a member of the Minnesota

    National Guard deployed in Afghanistan

with another 23 Minnesotans and 34 sol-

diers from the Mississippi National Guard.

The Minnesota soldiers are teaching agri-

culture in hazardous rural areas. The

    Mississippi soldiers provide security. And

although none of them are Jewish, they are

now all members of our Beth El Family, as

our synagogue has adopted the unit.

Many churches in Minnesota have long

been adopting military units and now our

synagogue proudly joins their ranks. The

    initiative grew out of discussions

    between Rabbi Olitzky and Steve

Hunegs, Executive Director of the Jewish Community

Relations Council and Chaplain John Morris of the

Minnesota National Guard. congregants Cindy Amberger

and Rachel Parnes are leading this effort.

When we learned of the Mississippi soldiers in the unit, we

contacted Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Mississippi

to see if they would like to partner with us. They enthusi-

astically agreed. Beth Israel is the largest synagogue in the

state with about 200 households. Like us, they want to

show support to these men and women serving overseas

    and their families.

These soldiers put their lives on the line, we should help

them, Rachel told me. She and Cindy expressed the desire

to make sure these brave soldiers and their families know

    that we care about them.

    4 c

a message from our president `iypdn

Who is Sergeant First Class Brian McFadden and Why Should You Care?by Gil Mann, Beth El President

Cindy, whose son has been in the US Navy for 9 years,

said, These soldiers are in dangerous situations, to say

nothing of discomfort. Our synagogue community needs to

be thinking about what these folks are going through.

This extends to the families they have left behind as well.

A friendly contact with the soldiers families here could

relieve the stresses they are experiencing. I like the notion

that we would acknowledge and do something for the fam-

ilies who must cope and try to manage with a loved one

who has left and is in a dangerous place, said Cindy.

Of the 24 Minnesota soldiers, 21 are married and 17 have

children. They range in age from 19

to 59. Five of them are women. I

spoke about them with the one of the

    wives, Lori Ahlness, whose husband

Eric is the commander of the unit.

They live in White Bear Lake.

Someone told me, now you know

what its like to be a single parent,

she said. That is not accurate.

    [Unlike many single parents,]

I worry about my husband (and the

other troops) all the time. Also, I

must make a constant and conscien-

tious effort to keep my husbands

name and spirit alive in the home.

    For example, when hanging

    Christmas stockings this year, she

told her 16-year-old daughter, lets put Dads up in the

middle so he is surrounded by love.

We want to surround them with Beth Els caring, even

though we dont know these folks personally yet. Or in

the words of Cindy, We are strangers, though I hope we

dont remain strangers. We are doing this, because it is the

right thing to do.(Please see next page to participate.)

Do the right thing please and help support "our" unit.

These soldiers are literally teaching Afghanis how to beat

their swords into plowshares. This verse from Isaiah

prophesying a time of peace, is the theme our sanctuarys

majestic stain glass window. We pray for these days as we

also pray for the day our courageous men and women

return safely and in good health to their families and

    homes.

SFC Brian McFadden of Bloomington iscurrently on active duty in Afganistan.

Mitzvah Program: One meaningful mitvah I have done was volunteering at STEP, the Saint Louis Park EmergencyProgram. I helped organize and shelve food. Helping at STEP was meaningful to me because I was helping less for-tunate people feed their families. I have also volunteered at the Sholom Home, packed food at Feed My StarvingChildren, made Mishloah Manot, and done simple things like pick up trash, participate during services and observe hol-idays and their traditions. Doing things for others really makes me feel that I am making a difference in someones life.

    HALEY ROSE WARREN

Daughter of Sheryl Sue and Steve Warren

Honoring Haley on her bat mitzvah, her parents will be sponsoring the kiddush andcongregational Shabbat lunch.

Mitzvah Program: I feel that doing mitzvot is important. I have performed many mitzvot: Feed My Starving Children, helping out at the Sholom Home, STEP, and giving tzedakah to the National Heart Association. Doing mitzvot can beas easy as participating in services and holidays. You don't just do mitzvot because they are commandments fromGod, but you should do them because they can help those who are less fortunate. The most meaningful mitzvah tome is feeding the poor because there is always someone in need of food whether in your own community or in otherparts of the world. It could be the difference between life and death.

OOMMGG!! WWhhaatt aa sseeaassoonn ooff PPuurriimm!!

It started in January with weekly Sunday morning hamentashen rolling,

pinching, baking (and testing?) headed by Linda Tell and the Beth El

Womens League for one of their largest fundraisers of the year. There

were over 100 volunteers who, over the course of two months, came to

help produce 900 dozen hamentashen! Laughter was heard coming from

the kitchen every Sunday morning, along with fabulous smells and

    yummy results!

ThenGemilat Hesed, under the direction of Marlene Bukstein,Margie Goldfine and Lisa Neuman, headed up the annual Mishloah

Manot fundraiser. Boxes, generously donated by Chopper Mintz, were

packed by the Sunday Morning Torah Plus students and were filled with

Womens League hamentashen, candies, nuts, masks and more.

Over 150 boxes were shipped out all over the country, thanks to

    the help of Jerry Raskin.

ThenLhiyot Bkesher (College Outreach Committee) packedand shipped off another 80+ boxes of Mishloah Manot to our

children away from home so they could taste a bit of Beth El

from afar. This committee, is a vital part of keeping our kids con-

    nected.

ThenDuring the week of Purim, Sunday started us off with anamazing Purim Carnival, put on by our USY chapter as their big

fundraiser, with great silent auction items, fun games, bouncy toys, prizes, and

food galore. Tons of USY parents and kids volunteered to make this an amazing

success, under the direction of our youth director, Molly Feldman.

ThenWednesday night came with the Purim Extravaganza, Spiel andOrder, a fabulous reading of Megillat Esther and our great dance to finish off

the evening! The talent in our congregation is outstanding! The writers,

singers, musicians, cast and crew were dedicated and fun. And our megillah readers

get better and better each year. Spiel and Order was written by Rabbi Olitzky (with tweaks by

Kim Kivens and John Orenstein) and directed by Kim

Kivens. Special thanks to Marsha Campbell who kept the

bouncing ball going on the Powerpoint so we could follow the

    megillah reading!

ThenThursday morningmore megillah reading (thanks toall the readers for coming at 7 a.m.) and some really bad (and

a few good) jokes to lighten the morning.

ThenA few hours later, Aleph Preschool gathered for amorning of frivolity a mini megillah reading and dancing,

    dancing, dancing!

ThenThursday night boasted the Cirque Du Pruim City-Wide Young Adults Party which rockedthe night away! Many of our young adults helped to plan the event, including Amy Shapiro,

Marcus Magy, Shana Cohen and Sarah Gruber.

Special Thanks to the amazing maintenance crew at Beth El who over the course of these months

(and every day/week/month of the year) set up, tore down, re-set up, shlepped.you get the

ideachairs, tables, sets, risers, screens, boxes. We would be nowhere without them!

New Traveling Exhibit Celebrates Machal VolunteersWho Served in Israels War of Independence During Israels War of Independence, approximately 4,000 Jewish

and non-Jewish volunteers from 29 countries risked their lives to

fight for the new Jewish state. These volunteers, known as Machal

Volunteers or Machalniks, are the focus of the exhibit, which

includes 16 historical photographs and storyboards created by

Machalnik Dr. Jason Fenton, which is now on display in the lobby

at Beth El. In 1948, Dr. Fenton then 16-years-old and orphaned

traveled to Israel to become a Machal Volunteer and search for his

older brother. The youngest-known Machalnik, Fenton convinced

army recruiters that he was a pilot, yet he had only flown a sport

plane a few times in his native England. After arriving in Israel,

Fenton found his brother in a local hospital recovering from a gun-

shot wound. Fentons brother persuaded army officials to assign

Fenton to the 4th troop, an antitank division in the Negev Desert.

The division fought with very few weapons, scavenging what they

could from the Egyptian army. Fenton served in the antitank unit for

two years, after which he immigrated to the United States. Most of

the surviving Machal Volunteers returned to their home countries,

but nearly 500 stayed or returned to Israel soon after. Not all

Machalniks survived, however. Over the course of the war, 122 lost

their lives fighting for Israels independence.
