BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE

The President Presents Dear fellow congregants. I trust you all have had a happy Channukah. For all you who are vacationing this winter, for however long, I wish you safe travels

and look forward to seeing you on your return. I have just returned from a family trip back to my home country South Africa. The last time I visited was May 1994. We emigrated in 1991. I arrived the day Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as President and the country had a new beginning with the release of the shackles of apartheid. The rainbow nation was born. There have been many changes, the physical ones the easiest to see with growth of residential areas, business and commercial development. Several areas have dete-riorated with age as well as disrepair. It does however remain a land with unparalleled natural beauty. For me the most significant and impressive changes are with race relations. Tensions from the past seemed so much less. The population appears more relaxed and at ease, everyone just gets on with life as it should be. One can carry on with living without consistently looking over ones shoulder. As you are aware, there are still is-sues to be dealt with. We read about corruption, unem-ployment; crime is still present but less of an issue. There is dissatisfaction with the current President. Imagine a similar scenario in Israel. To live a normal life after a properly negotiated peace agreement would be amazing. To concentrate on living peacefully rather than defensively seems right now to be a dream, far from reality. Let us hope and pray peace in the Holy land will become reality. Please join me in wishing our executive director Luba and husband Clive a hearty Mazal tov on the upcoming marriage of their granddaughter in Sydney, Australia. Luba is presently in Australia for the wedding. After a hectic year in the office, we wish her also a well-deserved rest and safe return. To those staying home, stay warm. I hope to see many of you in Shul on Shabbat. President. Stan Kitay

Shalom Aleichem Owners and Friends! A lot has been happening at the shul. We wanted to update you on our search for a new assistant rabbi. It hasn’t been easy to find someone. Many of the young adults want someone just like Rabbi Will.

They say they want someone that looks like a rabbi. Just like Rabbi Will. He should have a full beard. Just like Rabbi Will. He should wear a hat. Just like Rabbi Will. They want someone to whom they can give kavod – honour. And so he must be honour-able. Just like Rabbi Will. At the same time, however, he needs to be cool. Just like Rabbi Will. He needs to look like a rabbi, but have a goyish-sounding short and sweet name. Just like Rabbi Will. He should be tall and good on the basketball court. Just like Rabbi Will. How do we find all that in one person? How do we find someone who looks like a rabbi, garners our honour, but maintains his cool name and composure? The search hasn’t been easy at all. Our dollar is terrible at the moment, and so we would prefer a Canadian. We also need someone who is currently available. Most of the good guys are already taken. Baruch Hashem, we are pleased to announce that we have found the perfect candidate. The Honourable Tim Uppal is pleased to join us as our new assistant rabbi. Clearly, he is honourable! He most certainly has a full beard! While he doesn’t wear a hat, he wears a big turban! (And many sefardic sages of yore wore turbans, so we are hopeful that the young adults will be satisfied!) He is definitely tall and ap-parently good at basketball! And with a name like Rabbi Tim, you would never guess how frum he really is! Rabbi Tim is excited about the new position. “My ancestors come from Punjab in India. We have a long history of trying to separate and start our own thing. I think I’ll be a good fit with the young adults at Beth Israel.” Not everyone has been happy with the announcement. “Just an-other sign we are shifting to the right,” one congregant was heard muttering. We’re not sure what they mean. At Beth Israel, we try to be as inclusive as possible. Although we are Orthodox, we are trying to reach out by hiring someone who was previously Con-servative. Guess you can’t please all the people all the time. What can you do?!?

See you all at Purim in Persia!

Rabbi & Rabbanit Friedman

As our secular year 2015 comes to a close, it is a good time to reflect on some recent events at Beth Israel. The night to celebrate Nostra Aetate was unique and memora-ble. It was a friendly, respectful gathering of Christians and Jews in our synagogue celebrating a decree by the Pope fifty years ago that was a turning point in improving and redefining the relations between the two faiths. I hope that those who missed it will be able to view the proceed-ings on video and hear the wise words that were spoken and the beautiful voices of the Filipino men’s choir. Beth Israel’s Chanukah celebration was wonderful. The bowling party was very enjoyable. The pizza and souf-ganiyot were food that suited the occasion well. The cha-nukia constructed with bowling pins by David Marcus was ingenious. The visit to Beit Horim took the celebration to the residents there and for some of us was the first time seeing the new “Our Parents’ Home”. Thanks to Riquette Sherman for the beautiful piano concert. Our Shabbat services continue to be the highlight of every week. There is a feeling of community as we daven and then enjoy Kiddush together. We look forward to Rabbi Friedman’s thought provoking and inspiring sermons. During Rabbi Friedman’s vacation, we were fortunate to hear sermons by Rabbis Glatt, Segal and Becker. We are also grateful to Greg Pesin, Amir Lehrer and Rabbi Becker for layning Torah. Rabbi Friedman has described the daily minyan as the lifeblood of an orthodox synagogue. Sometimes we still struggle to get the minyan. We count on the men of the congregation to attend and enable us to continue with these services. I am planning to recycle the old idea of having minyan captains to help with this endeavour and ease the burden on the Rabbi. Volunteers for at least one minyan per week would be welcome. Thanks to everyone who helped keep the minyans going including the layning while Rabbi Friedman was away.
