Dear Faith Family of Our Lady of Grace, Praised be Jesus Christ…now and forever! The US Catholic Church this weekend celebrates, “Priesthood Sunday.” In a me when priesthood is stretched and being purified there is also a renewal that is taking place in the priesthood. In 2003, the USA Council of Serra Interna onal—the organiza on whose mission is to foster and affirm voca ons to the priesthood and vowed religious life—organized the first Priesthood Sunday. They felt there was a great need to honor those who are called to be priests. There are many references throughout the Old and New Testament regarding the importance of priests and clergy: “I will give you pastors according to my heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding” (Jeremiah 3:15). In Mark 16:15, Jesus told the apostles, “Go to all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole crea on.” • The role of priests is essen al to the prosperity of the Church. Priests wear many hats in the Church, yet the most important

is to be a mediator between God and us. Without priests, there would be no one to transform the bread into the Body of Christ, no one to absolve us of our sins, no one to marry us, bury us, and the list goes on…Here is some basic informa on and sta s cs on the priesthood in our current ecclesial situa on:

• As of 2014 there are 38,275 Catholic priests in the U.S. and 414,313 worldwide. • There was a modest increase in the number of priests in Africa, a larger rise in Asia, and slight decreases in the Americas,

Europe and Oceania. • Asia saw a 13.7 percent growth in the number of priests between 2007 and the end of 2012. • The number of parishes without a resident priest pastor: 3,496. Here at OLG we con nue to build a culture of voca ons par cularly as we encourage voca ons to priesthood and religious life. Last week I was a ending the Na onal Voca on Directors Conference we reflected on how we are in the mission of making dis-ciples when we accept and invite men and women to discern voca ons. We are living an apostolic age when our rela onships give us an iden ty and our iden ty gives us a mission. What we do (our mission) flows from our iden ty (who we are), and who we, are begins with our hearts in communion with Jesus. Finding or “figuring out” our voca on will not make us happy on its own. Our rela onship with Jesus makes us brings us happiness, because with Him is the fullness of life and love. Our rela onship with God gives us joyful clarity about who we are and what we are about. This weekend we want to thank Anisha Virgen, our director of outreach, and her team of volunteers for establishing our month-ly service projects. Your dona on of canned goods will be able to replenish the food banks in the San Fernando Valley. True Chris an Charity is rooted in the Eucharist. Jesus’ self-giving pours himself out in love so that love can be poured out in the world in social jus ce and charity especially as lay people, for us Catholics, this takes on special meaning today. According to the Second Va can Council, "It is the special voca on of the laity to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and direc ng them according to God's will. They live in the world, in each one of the world's occupa ons and callings and in the ordi-nary circumstances of social and family life which, as it were, form the context of their existence. There they are called by God to contribute to the sanc fica on of the world within, like leaven, in the spirit of the Gospel, by fulfilling their own par cular du es." Please join us for the upcoming feast day of the French Carmelite nun and doctor of the church, St. Therese of the Child Jesus and Holy Face on October 1st. We will conclude our solemn novena on that day with two Masses- 8am and 6:30pm (with the blessing and distribu on of roses). May St. Therese send us a shower of roses for our parish family sending us holy families, holy voca ons, and holy priests! We also congratulate our Society of St. Vincent de Paul for their efforts these years of Chris an service. Last week they spoke at all the Masses please con nue to support their upcoming Walk for the Poor on October 2nd. See you all there! Have a great week! In Jesus and Mary,

-Fr. Marinello Saguin

-Padre Marinello Saguin
