Briefs From Father McMahon
It was very exciting to welcome Pope Francis to the United States this past week. The Pope’s visit to the United States was preceded by a visit to Cuba. Both the U.S and Cuba credited Pope Francis last December for helping to facilitate the landmark decision by the two countries to begin normalization of relations. Let us all pray for the success and safety of his Papal visit and for the unity and sanctity of the human family. During the six day US visit to Washington, New York and Philadelphia, the Pope will be preparing for a major event on his return to Rome: the three-weeklong second edition of the Synod of Bishops on family life issues which Archbishop Cupich is slated to attend. In the words of Fr. Thomas Reese, a senior analyst for the National Catholic Reporter, “the Pope will focus on God’s compassion and love, and on our responsibility to love one another. His priorities are helping the poor, protecting the environment, and bringing peace to a troubled world. Last week we had a very difficult and painful parish meeting concerning the future of our parish school. Because of the catastrophic drop in student enrollment, our parish has been placed in a very difficult position. Everyone is very upset and troubled by this turn of events. One thing is very clear: we must be constructive in what we say and do as we work through this challenge. We must pray for God’s guidance and listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We must be a Catholic Christian community in the manner in which we treat each other, avoiding anger and rash judgment. We need to call upon our best selves and put into practice our Christian beliefs. “…in all things, charity.” On this Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time we are also marking Mental Health Awareness Sunday. We have been asked by Archbishop Cupich to “focus our prayer and reflection on understanding more about mental illness and addiction, and the need to demonstrate compassion and support toward our brothers and sisters who struggle with these afflictions, many of whom are known to us… The Gospel of the Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time tells the story of a person stigmatized by the community. Jesus responds to him with a compassionate heart, not with judgment out of ignorance or fear, recognizing that his presence and word bring hope and healing to all of God’s children. Jesus calls us to follow his example of compassion, acceptance, and love today.” May all people of faith work together to change both attitudes and practices toward those who live with mental illness. We pray for a world where all persons are treated with dignity and receive the person-centered mental and physical care and support they need to thrive and achieve their goals.

ATTENTION LADIES: St. Peter Council of Catholic Women (CCW) invites you to become a member. We meet the 1st Tuesday of the month in Father Frawley Hall (parish hall). Our goal is to unite the women of our parish and community so that we can act upon common concerns. We sponsor a bake sale, cookie walk, and card and bunco party to help fund our charitable donations. We are planning an outing to the Handmaids of the Precious Blood in Lake Villa. Our meetings vary with speakers, demonstrations, and our annual Christmas party. Best of all it’s a great way to meet a variety of ladies that are part of CCW. We are the best bargain of the year-- $10.00 for a 2 year membership. We kick the year off with our first meeting on Tuesday, September 1st. It’s a pot luck luncheon starting at 11:30. We invite you to join us!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At first glance, the situation of the penitents in the early church is shocking: isolated and labeled, their journey back to fellowship at the Lord’s table seems arduous and even cruel. However, at no time in the process were the penitents lacking the support of the community. Penances were per-formed for all to see, and we can tell from the homilies of the day that people earnestly desired to see the sinner benefit from the remedy. Tertullian reminded the penitents that they were living among their brothers and sisters, fel-low servants of the same Lord, still in the embrace of the Spirit. He tells them that when they extend their hands in blessing to the faithful, it is Christ they touch. He tells them that when they see tears in the eyes of believers, it is Christ who is interceding for them with the Father. There is a treasure of our tradition woven into this history: these people knew profoundly that the prayer of Christ’s body, the church, was the prayer of Christ himself. Prayer was not merely support for a person down on his or her luck; it was effective and necessary. The treasure we can see even through the tangles of history is this: the Spirit of God is poured out on the church, and brings grace, for-gives sin, makes us holy, and always calls us to fullness of life.

WOMEN OF THE WORD “WOW” BEGINS ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH AT 9:30AM in the Reli-gious Education Center (former Convent). What is WOW? It is a gathering of women (of all ages) to meet on every Monday morning during the school year from 9:30am until 11:00am. What do we do there? We gather with a short prayer, discuss the previous weekend’s Scripture readings from Mass and then read through and discuss the Scripture readings for the upcoming weekend’s Mass. Do we do anything else? YES! We bring our questions about our faith, the church, whatever is going on at that time in the church year. And we have an opportunity to meet other women in our parish too! Why not join us on the 21st? Bring a friend along! We are looking forward to meeting YOU! Oh, and you don’t have to make a commitment to attend every single Monday we meet—but we would love to see you every time or whenever you can make it!
WOW
As I was driving to work on Wednesday morning, I had the privilege of listening to Pope Francis give a speech on the White House lawn. If you missed it, here is an excerpt from it: We know by faith that “the Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home” (Laudato Si’, 13). As Christians inspired by this certainty, we wish to commit ourselves to the conscious and responsible care of our common home. The efforts which were recently made to mend broken relationships and to open new doors to cooperation within our human family represent positive steps along the path of reconciliation, justice and freedom. I would like all men and women of good will in this great nation to support the efforts of the international community to protect the vulnerable in our world and to stimulate integral and inclusive models of development, so that our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and prosperity which God wills for all his children. -Pope Francis, Sept. 23, 2015 My prayer, as I hope you would pray also, is that Americans were inspired by the Pope's visit, and that more and more people would be open to the Good News of Jesus Christ. A very important thing that Jesus said in the Bible was, "Go, therefore, and make disciples." (Matthew 28:19) Pope Francis is not the only one called to make disciples. We are all called to this mission. I leave you with this thought... How are you being a disciple today and how are you making disciples today? God Bless,
