THE HIGHEST LAW From time to time, newspapers and magazines will offer, as an item of “filler,” various laws that are still on the books but seem silly to us in our day and age. In one California city, it is illegal to have two indoor bathtubs in one house. Clean water, a precious commodity when the law was written, is now readily available, so the law seems silly. But the human value of protecting and preserving precious resources is still around, evident in many conservation laws that seem sensible to us. So it is with the laws of religious tradition. What Jesus scorns today is others’ attitude toward ritual laws, an attitude that becomes near-ly idolatrous when laws are observed for their own sake. Jesus teaches that ob-servation of external ritual laws is of value only when they are emblems of our internal disposition toward the will of God. Our whole lives must follow the one ultimate law of God: to love God completely and to love neighbor entirely. Roman Catholicism is a tradition rich with customs, traditions, and even laws. As we continue to listen to the voice of Christ, we must always look into our own hearts and underneath our ritual practices to make sure that love of God and love of neighbor are what we prize above all. Ushers, please be sure to count everyone attending Mass, this includes the children.

In last week’s bulletin article, I shared Msgr. Michael Heintz’s article on the encouragement to silence for the sake of encounter. We see not only from his encouragement that silence is important but scripturally in 1 Kings 19: 11-13, God is not in the raging storms but in the silence. We see Jesus retreat away from the people he serves, his followers and disciples to a place of solitude. It also doesn’t seem that Christianity has a corner on the idea of silence. We can see it present in other faiths such as Buddhism, in modern psychology we find it part of a practice called mindfulness and it’s been a practice can be seen all the way back to ancient philosophers.

So we can say that silence finds itself in many cultures, through many ages and at times without religion. It’s almost as if we could say that it’s one part among many of being human. But what component of silence separates the Tradition of the Catholic Church from the rest? From my studies it’s an orientation to encounter the Triune God within that silence. There is so much to say about the encounter itself, primarily who are we encountering when we encounter the Triune God? I believe there is a depth that we could spend a lifetime to uncover this question and I hope to speak on some of that depth in the future but for now I simply want to speak on the challenge of silence.

I don’t know if you have ever attempted to be silent for 30 minutes or an hour. But in my experience thoughts tend to flood my mind, the todo lists, what I’m going to cook for dinner, will UK win the national championship in 2019? Generally speaking the trivial, except for the UK winning the national championship of course. But I also find the deeper things like insecurities, fears, and substantial worries. How do we handle these trivial and things of depth when we try to enter into the silence? Try and fix them? Create a to-do list? I believe there are a couple of approaches.

I always bring a piece of paper or notebook to silence. Writing down all those things so that I can act on them later. Writing these down, gives recognition that these are important but it’s also a way to help me to be in the moment with God. Also, not everything I write I put off for another time, those deeper things are the things that I relate to God. I know he knows them but there is something substantial about being willing to share those things with him and to listen for him.

That being said our experience with God isn’t always transactional. Because we show up it doesn’t always mean that God will reveal something to us in connection with what we shared. It could be something different, it could be a challenge, it could be a call to conversion or forgiveness. It may be a month, a year, a decade before God answers that prayer. But there is grace in the unexpected that can come from prayer, sometimes greater than the expectations we have from an answered. I hope that you take time to encounter the silence, to dispose yourself to something that’s been practiced for centuries and to encounter the living and most loving God. ~Pax Nick Higdon

6 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2018

The main theme of today's readings is that true religion does not consist in scrupulously performing certain rituals and saying empty words for prayers. The essence of true religion is loving God, recognizing His presence in our neighbors and doing them loving service. True religion lies in loving our neighbors as ourselves and not simply in keeping the laws and traditions in the Bible and in the Church. The first reading points out the characteristics of true religion as God’s closeness to His people and the intimacy of people with their

God and the pursuit of God’s justice in society. The observance of the Law was considered a sign of commitment and obedience to God, enabling the Israelites to lead lives better than their 'pagan' neighbors. The responsorial psalm describes a person who lives justly before God —blameless and just, thoughtful and honest in dealing with others. In the second reading, James defines true religion as translating the love of God into action by putting into practice the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, thus doing deeds of loving kindness for the vulnerable and needy members of the community. In other words, people of true religion glorify God by caring for those who are unable to care for themselves. In today’s gospel lesson our attention is drawn to a debate between Jesus and the Pharisees on the subject of "Tradition." Jesus warns them against the tendency to equate traditional “human precepts” with God’s will. He blames the scribes and the Pharisees for giving undue importance to external observances in the name of “tradition,” while ignoring the Law’s real spirit. True religion should focus on the essentials. In particular, Jesus criticizes Pharisaic observance of ritual washing and declares that it is our inner motivations and dispositions that reflect our purity or impurity. We need to keep the spirit of the Church’s laws and practices. For example our Sunday obligation is intended to encourage us to worship God in the parish community, to offer our lives to God, to ask his pardon for our sins, to thank God for His blessings, to present our needs before Him and to receive divine life and strength from Him by receiving Holy Communion. Our daily family prayers are meant to thank God for his blessings, to present the family’s needs before God, to ask pardon for all our sins, and to maintain the spirit of unity and love in the family. Let us accept the challenge to become listeners and doers of God’s word as St. James instructs us: Let us ask the question how the Sunday or daily readings are affecting or changing our lives to discover whether we are being attentive listeners to, and doers of, God’s word. We become more fully Jesus’ family members, only when we consistently “hear the word of God and do it” (Lk 8:21). When we receive Jesus in Holy Communion today let us ask him for the grace to become the doers of his word as he was the doer of his Fathers’ will. Communal Anointing of the Sick: There will be a communal anointing of the sick on September 8 & 9 weekend’s masses. All those who would like to receive this sacrament are welcome to stay after the mass. Copy of the homily. I was told that some of our old par ishioners have the problem of hear ing homily and was asked whether I could make a few copies of my homily for them to follow. So I will try to make 30 copies and leave 10 each in 3 bulletin boxes. Please follow it and put it back in the boxes for the rest of the two masses. Thank you
