Principal’s MessageAloha Pearl Harbor Elementary School Ohana,

Can you believe that we are half way through our first quarter? Time has surely flown by as we all have been learning and growing together. There are so many great things happening in our classrooms and our students are hard at work but also having lots of fun.

We are especially proud of our Kindergarten students, the class of 2029!  They are thriving as they transition to school. I enjoy seeing their bright smiles light up our campus. We are grateful for our staff and parents for their dedication in helping our keiki during this time.

As many of you know, we are right in the middle of our Parent-Teacher conferences. We truly appreciate your participation, as you are a vital role in your child’s educational journey.  It is our hope that we will be able to

work together to ensure the success of your child. Our Teachers have been working hard to provide the students with learning experiences that will stretch them and prepare them for our ever-changing society.

We would like to welcome our new staff members to our Pearl Harbor Elementary School Ohana: Ms. Wiseman –Pre K Ms. DeWitt –Gr. 2 Resource Ms. Parcels –Gr.3 Resource Mrs. Tokunaga –Gr. 4 Mrs. Camejo –Gr. 5 Ms. Spaulding –Gr. 5&6 Resource Ms. Araki - RTI/Mentoring Welcome and mahalo for all you do for our students!

As a safety precaution, a few maintenance/repair projects have been scheduled to occur during the fall break. The lights in the cafeteria will be updated and the windows in our Library will be upgraded as well.

Mahalo for your patience and understanding while we close our library during this renovation.

Here’s a look at some of our upcoming events that we would love for you to be a part of. Please put this in your calendars!

Avid Parent Night:  Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 5:15-7:00pm Fall Festival: Thursday, November 10, 2016 from 3:00-7:00pm More information to follow.

Aloha Pearl Harbor Ohana,

I hope all of you are doing well! Please take a few minutes to reflect with your child on their progress after the first month of school. It’s important to praise your child for all of the good things they’ve done thus far as well as creating an action plan that will help them continue to grow as both a student and person. We believe in a growth mindset here at PHES which emphasizes the importance of hard work and perseverance. Our children need to learn that anything is possible with the “right” mindset!

I’m glad we are conducting our parent-teacher conferences earlier this year to discuss your child’s transition to their new class and grade level. It’s important to collaborate with each other to ensure your

child’s success in school. Please continue to communicate with our teachers and support them throughout the school year.

Please make sure that your children are in school on time. There have been many students arriving after our 7:45 tardy bell. The start of the day is vital as daily announcements and morning duties are executed during this time. Also, please do not park your cars in our drop off area fronting the cafeteria as it creates a traffic and safety concern. All students should be exiting the vehicles on the curb side and not on the road side. Please use good judgement as we don’t want to see anyone get hurt!

There should be NO children loitering after school. Children that are not part of an after school program need to be picked up at the end of the school day. This includes the siblings of the participants. Non participants aren’t supervised and this creates a safety concern. After school care is available through Kama’aina Kids A+ program located in our cafeteria.

We look forward to seeing all of you on Thursday, September 22, 2016 for AVID Parent Night. Please come out to learn more about AVID and to support your child! Your participation is needed to ensure a successful event!! We are counting on you this year to make a positive impact through your participation in all school activities.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you in the near future!

Mahalo,

Mr. Kimo Ogino Vice Principal

School Uniform Statement of Policy All students in grades kindergarten through six attending Pearl Harbor Elementary School are required to wear school uniforms (Mon.-Thurs.). This policy was approved by the School Community Council following extensive discussion and data collection. It was decided that school uniforms would have a positive effect on the school learning environment as well as raise the standard of dress for all students. Clothes should be clean and well fitted.

Federal Survey Cards Worth Millions in Impact Aid HONOLULU – The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) will be sending a U.S. Department of Education Federal Survey Card home with Hawaii's public school students for parents to complete beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016.

The Impact Aid Program surveys allow HIDOE to qualify for a partial reimbursement for educating federally connected students, such as children whose parents work or live on federal property. The program was created to assist school districts that lose tax revenues (e.g. income, sales and property taxes) due to a federal presence. Funds go to local school districts, just like local property taxes, and can be used to hire teachers, purchase textbooks and computers, pay for utilities and more. Parents are strongly urged to complete the surveys and return them to their schools as soon as possible.

"Impact Aid funds are extremely important to support our public schools and help to improve quality education for our students," said Kathryn Matayoshi, HIDOE Superintendent. "During the 2014-15 school year, the state accounted for more than 23,000 federally connected students and received more than $27 million in Impact Aid funding. We ask all parents for their cooperation to complete these important surveys."

Every public school has a 100-percent return rate goal and asks that parents complete and return the federal survey this week. Please visit http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/ParentsAndStudents/MilitaryFamilies/Pages/About-Impact-Aid.aspx on the Impact Aid Program for more information.

Tumblebooks “TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you.“

-Tumblebooks

Pearl Harbor Elementary School is subscribing to Tumblebooks this year. Ask your child about this program - have fun reading!

Get ConnectED!

Reading Wonders is a robust program that develops both the foundational skills and critical thinking skills our children will need for a successful future.

What should you expect?

Your child will be close reading, writing analytically, and practicing foundational skills in the classroom using Reading Wonders books and support materials.

In addition, Reading Wonders also includes online, digital content, accessible both from school and home. Your child has received a ConnectED account, including a username and password, that will allow you to have access to:

• A weekly letter outlining what your child will be learning • Electronic copies of all program books, including the Your Turn Practice Book • Time for Kids articles, games, and word and spelling list activities to do at home

For your convenience, we have included a Reading Wonders Kid Link on our Pearl Harbor Elementary School website www.pearlharborelementary.org. Go to: Students>Kid Links>Change Section (choose grade level)>Reading Wonders. Enter your child’s ConnectED username and password. Student account information for Grades 2-6 can be located in their password keepers. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are unable to locate account information.

Thank you, as always, for your involvement!

Birthday Books! The Birthday Book Program celebrates the birthdays of

students of Pearl Harbor Elementary. Participating

parents make a donation to the
