Welcome to the macrobert’s Autumn/Winter Season 2009.I am delighted to welcome a number of internationally acclaimed companies to the stage this season, presenting a strong mix of dance, drama and music not to mention our famous family programme, and of course the now legendary macrobert Christmas shows. This season kicks off in musical style with the fabulous Scottish National Jazz Orchestra – Tommy Smith returns, leading a tribute to the music of Wayne Shorter, featuring “vibes master” Gary Burton.David Hughes Dance featuring Al Seed take to the stage with The Red Room, a groundbreaking adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of The Red Death, blending extreme physical theatre with an array of traditional dance. We’ve also brought back Icarus Theatre, who performed the beautiful Vincent in Brixton last season, with a major new production of Othello. The season highlights however, are two productions which are contrasting in style and delivery – Tony Roper’s The Steamie which will be at macrobert for a week in October, and this year’s feather in the macrobert cap, Bounce – Insane In The Brain. This Swedish Hip Hop company is second to none, and come to macrobert as only one of two Scottish dates in their UK tour. An adaptation of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, this show features an eclectic soundtrack including Missy Elliot, Cypress Hill (of course), DJ Krush and many more, and most of all, an awe-inspiring company of 9 incredible dancers pushing the boundaries of physical theatre and dance to the limit. Bounce are also visiting us as part of the mPOWER project – this project is aimed at engaging 12-17 year olds in the creative processes behind planning, programming, running and marketing a festival, which will take place in August 2010. If you are of this age range, and are not yet involved, find out how by e-mailing [email protected] Don’t forget, our Christmas shows are now on sale. Johnny McKnight returns as writer and star of this year’s Panto Sleeping Beauty, Rob Evans takes the helm for 3-5s show The Night Before Christmas, and Complete Productions will be here with the delightful Peep for ages 0-3. Don’t worry about breakfast, you get toast at the end of this one!You can keep up to date with all things macrobert by following us on Facebook, Twitter or Bebo. Also please keep an eye out for our new website which will be unleashed soon…!We hope to see you at macrobert very soon.

Junction 25From Where I Am StandingYou taught me the important lessons; how to tie my shoelaces and tell the time, how to ride a bike. You told me which doors to open and which to close, you were there taking the photos when I blew out the candles, and were always there when I needed you… You said I could be anything I wanted, you said not to be afraid of the world, you said don’t follow the money, don’t mumble, eat with your mouth closed, you know there’s a t in party. That’s what you said to me. Well, that’s what you were supposed to say to me. No matter what you said, you were always there. Holding my hand, whether I liked it or not.

Junction 25 will perform a newly devised play, alongside their own parents, in a show that explores the often complex dynamics of family life.

Saturday 12 September, 8pmTicket Prices £6 full price / £4 concession

Vibes master Gary Burton occupies a unique place in jazz as a pioneering instrumentalist and accompanist to Stan Getz and George Shearing. Now Burton joins the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra to pay tribute to another of jazz’s true greats, saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, a creative force with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, crucial member of Miles Davis’s quintet, co-leader of fusion masters Weather Report, and enduring inspiration to a world-wide audience. Featuring Shorter jewels including Nefertiti, ESP and Virgo Rising, SNJO present music of extraordinary subtlety, passion and melodic character played by a first rate orchestra of collective skill and solo firepower.

When Mag interferes in Maureen’s first and possibly final chance of a loving relationship, a train of events is set in motion that leads inexorably towards the play’s terrifying finale.Martin McDonagh’s multi award-winning play is a gripping blend of dark comedy, melodrama, horror and tragedy.

Kirkland CicconeThe Dead Don’t Sue

Mr Kirkland Ciccone has taken his love of old Hollywood one step too far…

The Dead Don’t Sue is an irreverent and quirky look at the days when men were macho and women were adept at sheer bitchery whilst wearing shoulder pads. It’s the story of Hollywood’s greatest era: the rise and fall of the studio system. Kirkland Ciccone will unleash his God-like knowledge of all things and his amazing Clark Gable-like sex appeal for the sake of his audience (that’s you by the way). The Dead Don’t Sue includes some rare pictures you might not have seen to weave a story that includes murder, sex, and the shocking rumours that can’t be repeated here because Kirkland doesn’t want Elvis to haunt him. And of course classic movies will get a few mentions!

Icarus TheatreOthello By William Shakespeare

How do you convince a man to murder his own wife?

In 16th century Venice, a military ensign passed over for promotion and consumed with jealously, plots the overthrow of his noble general, the mighty Othello. Following on from the success of Shakespeare’s R&J and Kill Bill Macbeth, South Hill Park Arts Centre presents a major new production of Shakespeare’s great domestic tragedy co-produced with Icarus Theatre Collective and Original Theatre Company. Tackling subjects of racism, belonging, and deception, this is a classic take on a poignant tragedy that mercilessly explores every inch of the human condition.

Horse

Horse McDonald is a unique talent. A musician all of her life, her career has spanned three decades, seven albums, hundreds of live appearances, and the inevitable ups and downs of life in the creative spotlight. She has performed alongside artists as diverse as Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Burt Bacharach, Sir Ian McKellen, Lesley Garrett, Pet Shop Boys, All Saints, Culture Club and Erasure to name but a few. The latest album Coming Up For Air began with, and ran through, various bereavements for Horse, family and friends; some of the songs are of her experience through this sad time, her sense of loss and not being able to say goodbye. In the pot are also songs about jealousy, lust, hope and uplifting moments of fun. This show encompasses these brilliant new songs and glorious back catalogue numbers.

The Steamie

A tale of love, life, laughter and laundry....It’s Hogmanay in a Glasgow Steamie (public wash house) during the 1950s - time to make sure that everything is clean as ye cannae bring in the New Year tae a dirty hoose! As the washing is done, four women sing, laugh and cry their way through the last working day of the year, with a little help from the increasingly not so handy Andy! Portraying a way of life in the midst of change, The Steamie is a hilarious cameo of Glasgow’s social history where the washing was always easier to do when the women shared their laughter and sorrow and a scandalous supply of gossip! Over half a century on, the way we work may have changed, but the play still strikes a chord of recognition with people today. Come along and listen to the woman have a moan, a gossip and a laugh - plus a few songs.

Will Fairy Contrary ever get out of her nighty-goon?
