FALL FEST D INNER AND S ILENT AUCTION
Thursday, October 26th
, 6 – 9 PM - Mark your calendar now! Your Vestry invites you to join your fellow parishioners for a festive evening of great food and camaraderie. In addition, you can help support St. Paul’s by participating in a silent auction. Please consider sharing your time, talent and treasure. You might contribute a service you can perform, an item you have made, or a treasure you’ve enjoyed but no longer need. Groups may wish to consider offering themed baskets. Let’s be creative! Thanks Jane Jarnis, Senior Warden
HOSPITALITY HELPERS!
We are in need of people who can help with lunches and receptions during the day. They typically take place at noon or mid-afternoon after funerals and memorial services. Tasks include setting up tables, putting out food and beverages and cleaning up afterwards. The commitment is 1-2 hours and offers the benefit of socializing with some really wonderful people! We would like to have a list of volunteers who could help. If you would like to be on the list to be called to help out when there is a lunch or reception please contact Susan Anderson in the church office ([email protected] or 724-3535).
BOOK STUDY—A GOOD TIME FOR THE TRUTH-RACE IN MN
Our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, has charged us to probe our views about race and our prejudices as part of our journey toward becoming The Beloved Community. Join us on Wednes-day nights, starting on September 20 to discuss A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota, edited by Sun Yung Shin. In this anthology sixteen people of color tell their stories of living in Minnesota. The Rev. Margaret Thomas and Susan Anderson will guide the group.
The group will meet from 7:30-8:30 p.m. (following the Wednesday night program) in the Olcott Room through October. Books can be ordered at your favorite local bookstore or on-line.

Wednesday Church Nights resume on September 13th! Please take a moment to read this information as we have made some changes this year. Our 5:30 pm Eucharist is held in church. (There will not be Eucharist if there are no Church Night activi-ties.) This is a great way to attend service if you are not able to make it on Sunday. We gather in the front pews. We are grateful that Brad Brunfelt will once again lead our music on his guitar. This service is less formal and briefer than Sunday. We use the coming Sunday’s scripture readings for discussion. I am delighted that Buffy Helstrom will be preparing our simple suppers again this year. Buffy does a wonderful job preparing a simple, healthy meal that we ask you to help support by making a donation toward defraying the cost. Check out the September menu in this edition of the Messenger. The 6:30 pm program includes Christian formation for children in preschool grade through confirma-tion. Character Club is a new program for prek-3rd grade with fun activities based on a different core val-ue each month. 4th-Confirmation age will have formation groups also. There will continue to be a speaker or program for adults. Please let me know if you have suggestions for speakers or programs. Church Nights will meet three times per month. Two Wednesdays the children/youth will be in their age specific program, one Wednesday we will be together for GIFT; Growing in Faith Together-(please see separate article), and we will have one Wednesday where we don’t gather at church, instead that time can be used for focusing on faith at home.
September Church Night Programs: September 13 – Summer Adventures! Nora Vos participated in the Youth Conversation Corps (YCC) program in Yellowstone Park over the summer. She joined 61 fellow teens in learning, working and rec-reating in Yellowstone Nation Park. She will share some of her adventures. We will also have some of our Episcopal Youth Music Camp campers share their experience of music camp in August. September 20 – Episcopal Youth Event took place in July near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Emily Hanna and Luisa Van Oss joined hundreds of other Episcopalian youth from around the country for “Pathways to Peace.” Luisa and Emily will share pictures and accounts of EYE, which included meeting the presiding bishop and visiting the memorial and museum at the Murrah Federal Building bombing site. September 27 – Our GIFT (Growing In Faith Together, see separate article) session will be “101 Ways to Pray” this month. Hope to see you at Church Night! Bill Van Oss, Rector
Wednesday Church Night Menu for September
We are blessed to have Buffy Helstrom cooking up delicious meals again this year on Wednesday nights. It is wonderful to have such an experienced cook share her talents with our church family. If you haven't tasted one of Buffy's made from scratch, healthy meals; you should try it this fall! Suggested donation is $3 a person or $10 a family to cover the cost of the meals. September 13 - Mexican Welcome Back Fiesta with enchiladas, refried beans, salsa fresca and cilantro lime salad (quesadilla kid option) September 20—Make your own chef salad night with turkey, ham, hard boiled eggs, and homemade dressing (ham/cheese or egg salad sandwich kid option) September 27 -Turkey Dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable and cranberries (PB & J kid option)
CHURCH NIGHTS IN SEPTEMBER
THE BELOVED COMMUNITY
The annual convention of The Episcopal Church in Minnesota is coming up September 15 and 16 at the DECC here in Duluth. Convention is a chance for us to gather with Episcopalians from throughout our state to do business (elections, budgets, resolutions, canons) and to pray and reflect on God’s mission and our call to participate in that mission today. All are welcome to be part of convention, even if you are not an elected delegate. Go to episcopalmn.org/ecmn-convention to register and to find out how to volunteer. At our convention this year we will be exploring Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community. Here is a brief description: “Dr. King's Beloved Community is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth. In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated be-cause international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimi-nation, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brother-hood. In the Beloved Community, international disputes will be resolved by peaceful conflict-resolution and reconciliation of adversaries, instead of military power. Love and trust will triumph over fear and hatred. Peace with justice will prevail over war and military conflict.” (The King Center, “The King Philosophy”) This focus on the Beloved Community could not come at a better time. Seeing what is happening in our country and our world, we need to be reminded that our neighbor is our brother, the stranger is our sister, and that their needs and concerns are our needs and concerns. The Beloved Community is a vision of God’s Kingdom here on earth. It is a vision of justice, peace and love for all in the midst of our diversity and complexity. Will you join us for learning, reflecting and working together on making the vision of the Beloved Community a reality in our community? Peace, Bill Van Oss Rector
Christian Formation and The Beloved Community
The Beloved Community is God’s Kingdom come here on earth. And that Beloved Community starts in each home; for it is in the home where faith practice and belief becomes rooted in the hearts and minds of children/youth and sticks for the rest of their lives. It happens at the dinner table, at the grocery store, in the classroom, in the board room and on the street. Being a part of God’s Beloved Community is a daily, lifelong decision to love God, follow Jesus and treat others as we want to be treated. Beloved Community is our theme for Christian Formation this year.

How will your household work towards being part of the Beloved Community this year? As the household calendar is getting filled in with school, sports, extracurriculars, work and other commit-ments are spiritual commitments getting penciled in too? Take a few minutes to think through your household’s spiritual commitments for the year and how you want to grow in faith both individually and/or as a family. 1. Then go online to www.stpaulsduluth.org and fill out the family faith plan! Besides discerning how your family will grow in faith this year, the form is also very important to help us in planning our groups and spaces to put them in. We need the photo release signed each year, so please fill out the quick form by September 1. Thanks! 2. Everything kicks off with Rally Day, Sunday, September 10! Kidsword for prek-3rd grade, a festive worship service, back pack/briefcase blessings for all students and teachers/professors, free lunch on the lawn, inflatables, games, music and dunk tank. You won’t want to miss it! It’s also a great day to invite neighbors and friends to come to church! 3. Milestone Celebration—Backpack/briefcase Blessing also on September 10: during an-nouncement time everyone who is a student or educator will be invited to come up with their back-pack/briefcase to celebrate the milestone of a new school year, be blessed and receive a gift to attach to their bag. (if you don’t bring a backpack; please still come up!) 4. Wednesday, September 13 is our first Church Night which includes formation for 4
th/5
th
grades, 6th
/7th
grades, the parent and teen Confirmation meeting for 8th
/9th
grade and a presentation for adults! 5. Bean Bags and Teen Décor Needed! We are busting at the seams with 3 large groups of youth who will be meeting on Wednesday nights, and we are trying to create spaces that are wel-coming and conducive to discussion instead of little kid tables and chairs. So we are looking for bean bag chairs or large cushions/gaming chairs! Have a bean bag chair you aren’t using any longer? Want to buy one for our youth spaces? (many stores have them now for college dorm rooms- the ones with vinyl covers instead of fabric are preferred so they can be wiped down) Want to donate $25 or any amount for us to purchase them? Have any other teen décor; positive/affirming posters, floor lamps, etc. that we could use to brighten up the rooms? We’d love your help! You can drop off donated items or funds to the church office; give to Sue on Sunday morning, or donate online at www.stpaulsduluth.org; scroll down to the “online giving” button which will take you to a secure site where you can select “youth activities” and then designate “bean bag” in the
blank space. Our youth thank you! 6. What’s New: Besides all the programming we will continue to offer seasonal festivals, take home faith kits, celebrating milestones, service projects, prayer partners, KidsWord on Sundays for prek-3
rd grade; and formation for grades 4-adults on Wednesdays, we have some new program-
ming in store!
A. Character Club: New for prek-3rd
grade on Wednesday nights! Each month we will en-gage in activities that highlight a different character trait that is a core value of the Episcopal Church and a part of being the beloved community; respect, hospitality, thankfulness, generos-ity, justice, integrity, compassion and inclusiveness. They will learn how to make each trait a part of their lives through fun games, crafts and activities. B. GIFT: stands for Growing In Faith Together, and replaces All In Activity Nights once a month on Wednesdays. GIFT events will provide all ages; individuals, couples and families; to explore God’s love for them by sharing the gift of each other and the gift of faith. A different

NOTES OF A DIFFERENT KIND. . .
The film My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) was not an epic piece of cinema, but it was entertaining. Tension in the story arises because the bride and her family are Greek, and the groom is not. (Interestingly and not helpful to my thesis here is the fact that in the Lutheran circles of my child-hood, an interfaith marriage was known as a Norwegian marrying a Swede.) As they move toward marriage, the groom decides he would like to be baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church. After this very elaborate rite of baptism, done in high orthodox fashion, the groom looks at the bride with all sincerity and says, “Now I’m Greek.” No one else saw that line as funny as I did. I laughed, but not one other soul in the theatre that day joined me. Of all the things that were given to him in bap-tism, becoming Greek was not one of them. Of course, the film wasn’t meant to be an instructional video on the theology of baptism. What stuck with me since then is the ever-present notion of what baptism isn’t. Baptism is our initiation into Christian community where there is “no longer Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female.” (Gal. 3:28) It is not, as the daft and theologically naïve groom in the film pro-posed, that we become Greek. We become God’s beloved. We are welcomed into the Church, the body of Christ. We are called by God to be a part of the diverse imperfect community of believers and live as Christ in the world. In God’s world, there is no “other.” All are welcome. All are nourished with the same bread and wine at the Eucharist. All are given, like Peter in the Gospel read in church this morning, given the keys to the kingdom. Thanks be to God for this indescribable gift. Tom Hamilton Director of Music

Sing, Ring, and Play!
Choir season is beginning! Join us to sing in the Chancel Choir. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:30. We meet at 9 on Sunday before church to sing for the 10:00 worship service. It’s a
great time working hard while laughing a lot and caring for each other. Join us.
Come ring in the St. Paul’s Handbell Choir! We ring for worship once a month and rehearse on Wednesdays from 7:40 until 8:30.
Chorister Singers and Ringers (grades 4-8) will be gathering in October and November. Watch the Messenger and email for more information.
October 31, 2017 marks 500 years since Martin Luther posted his “Ninety-Five Theses” in Wittenberg, launching a debate about Christian teaching and practice that led to significant changes and charted a new course for Western Christianity. We will be observing the 500
th anniversary of the Reformation and Luther’s contributions to our under-
standing of the gospel and Christian practice by offering a book discussion session on Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 pm. Suggested books are Martin Luther by Martin Marty and/or Brand Luther: How an Unheralded Monk Turned His Small Town into a Center of Publishing, Made Himself the Most Famous Man in Europe—and Started the Protestant Reformation by Andrew Pettegree. Come pre-pared to discuss one or both books! We will also be welcoming Bishop Tom Aitken of the Northeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) as our Church Night speaker on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. Bishop Tom will speak on Luther’s significance then and now. On Wednesday, October 18 GIFT focuses on Martin Luther.
Our future evening Bible study session is scheduled for Thursday, September 7, 2017. Each ses-sion meets 6:30-8:00 pm in the Parish Hall. During our meetings we are discussing The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu. At our next meeting we will be deciding both our Fall meeting dates and what our next focus of study will be. What ideas would you suggest? You are welcome to join us too! Please call the office to learn about the sessions, or email Rever-end Barb about it. ([email protected])

AN OPEN INVITATION TO JOIN ST. PAUL’S ALTAR GUILD
ST PAUL’S – A Place for Everyone, A Ministry for Everyone
Our Altar Guild is in need of new members! You don’t need to be a life-long member of St Paul’s, a certain age or gender, or even attend church services every Sunday to become a member of the Altar Guild. And no previous experience is required! We just need people who are willing to careful-ly and respectfully serve our beloved St. Paul’s church and all that is within. New this year, we have a special opportunity for 1 or 2 reliable people to assist the Altar Guild. Additional helpers are needed to pick up the altar flowers once a week on Fridays and deliver them to the church. It’s a small commitment that could be a huge help! Ask Carrie for details. If you have any questions, would like to hear more, or are excited to begin, you may contact me by phone or email. Or, speak with any member of the Altar Guild – they will happily tell you about our joyful service! Warmest regards, Carrie Miller, Altar Guild Director 218-216-5591 (cell) [email protected]
