MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR A poem I read recently reflects my belief we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world and have for our enjoyment one of the best Seniors' Activity Centres. What a summer it has been.

» Isn’t life glorious! Isn’t it grand! Dare to be happy—don’t shy away. Reach out and capture the joy of today! Life is for living! Give it a try; Open your heart to the sun in the sky! Dare to be loving and trusting and true, treasure the hours with those dear to you! Dare to be kind—it’s more fun than you know, Give joy to others and watch your own grow. «

September is considered the start of a new season at the Centre and you will note some enhancements to the building were done during the summer. The Seniors' Centre has the endorsement of the District council for our liquor licence application, so members will be able to enjoy a beverage with their dinners soon. We look forward to new challenges, participating in the varied programs, events and outings offered to the members. We still require volunteers for various areas of the Centre. If you would like to help please contact Caroline in the office. Brian Hann Advisory Board Chair

SENIORS' SCENE September /October 2013

UPDATES / NEWSTRAVEl SMART EVEnTSEvents will be September 26 from 1 – 7 p.m. and September 28 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Atrium at the Community Centre. Come find out about safe economical alternatives to driving in addition to demonstrations on changing tires and more. Check it out!

MEMBERSHIP Membership definitely has its benefits, but we do have pricing options for non-members for some programs and trips. Please ask if you or a friend would like to attend a one off trip or program and have not joined to be a member. Please ask about the prices and benefits of joining, as there are definite benefits if you're interested in registering for more than one thing.

The NorTH SHorE KEEp WEll progrAm has a 25 year history of keeping seniors active, healthy and connected to their community. The session in West Van is held every Thursday from 9 – 11 a.m. The first hour is mild exercise followed by blood pressure checks, massage (shoulders, hands and feet) and nutritional information. You are welcome to dropin and join the class to see what we’re all about. For more information please call 604-988-7115, ext. 27 or visit us online at keepwellsociety.ca.

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMunITY RECREATIOn MAnAGER Fall is the festive season when we have so many opportunities to welcome people into our home, the Seniors’ Activity Centre. I encourage you to smile and welcome the new faces into our Centre and invite them to join you, for coffee, a game or even a trip. Making friends in a new place can be a challenge except in a

place where you feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. Lou has been busy planning a wonderful Oktoberfest Dinner Thursday, October 10. John has a list of great trips coming up. Caroline is looking for more amazing people to join her elite group of volunteers who make magical things happen in our Centre on a regular basis. Sylvia has new lectures and is gearing up for the Christmas season around the corner. Wendy has a number of new fall programs to keep you fit and healthy! Robyn is helping individuals and families connect with those that have been isolated from our community. Joni and I are sharing the success story of our Seniors’ Activity Centre at the World Health Organization’s International Conference for Age-friendly Cities in Quebec, this September. There are new faces, activities and friendships to be had here at the Seniors' Activity Centre, come inside this fall or get outdoors with us! I look forward to seeing you! Jill lawlor Community Recreation Manager, West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre

VoluNTEErS mAKE EVEryTHiNg HAppEN ArouND our CENTrE. I saw an interesting quote recently about volunteering: “The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired. One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.” — Gordon B. Hinckley We are in need of volunteers to make sandwiches, to deliver meals, to drive people to medical appointment, to fill in as cashiers, to assist seniors with errands and much more. If you have submitted an application to volunteer and you have not had a response, please contact Caroline. I'd love to hear from you. Contact Caroline at 604-925-7288 or [email protected]
