2020 Portland All British Field Meet Postponed to 2021

It is with great sadness that we must report that we have found it necessary to move the ABFM forward to 2021.

There will be no ABFM at PIR this year. The wind against us was just too heavy. Currently, the State has not permitted PIR to have more than 250 visitors on-site, and it is not known if they will. In any case, spectators would not be allowed. Many former participants have expressed their fear of attending due to COVID19.

We will be so ready for next year! All those who have registered, you will receive a 100% refund. This process will take some time, so please be patient. Some refunds will be back to your credit card and some by check.

The board is currently seeking an alternate location for the Labor Day weekend so we can celebrate our British cars and will let all know once and if this becomes solidi-fied.

President’s Message September 2020 So COVID has been around for quite awhile and we have been anxious to get together and go for a drive. Reid’s tour to Lincoln City was the perfect opportunity! When we got to Sauvie Island for the start there were over 50 cars (mostly British) waiting to get going. Reid handed out instructions for a self-guided tour and several groups gathered and left. Several CGMGC folks queued up and off we went headed west on the Oregon side, across the Longview bridge into Washington and west again to the Megler bridge into Astoria. A few more club members joined our group for lunch at Mo’s overlooking the Columbia River. Several of us continued on to Lincoln City and several headed for home. After a great dinner with Larry and Ken & Joan, we had a quiet evening at our hotel and a great drive home the next morning. Thanks, Reid, for a fun getaway on some roads we don’t get onto very often. We had another opportunity for a drive with Peggy and Donna. If you missed the first tour to Amity, this was your

chance and we had several new folks this time. It was a hot day, but no cars or passengers overheated. John Polos made it to the Wheatland ferry and found that his clutch had gone out before he crossed the river. He was fine waiting for a tow, so on we went to Amity. Had a nice rest break at the city park then several continued on with Donna leading to Beaverton and several headed for home. We stopped again at the bakery and got some goodies. On our way back, we crossed the ferry again and there was John still waiting for his tow. Marla was on her way to pick him up since it wasn’t possible for John to ride home with the tow truck. John’s phone was dead and she was unsure of how to get to him, so he used our phone and she drove up within a few minutes. Good to see some folks we haven’t seen for awhile. Thanks, Peggy and Donna, for put-ting the day together.

I’ve been helping Peggy with the sale of her MG in the past few months and it finally has a new home. Scott from the British Motor Club of Oregon in the Eugene area bought it and off it went. Scott reported to Peggy that the trip home was uneventful and he had several comments and “thumbs-up” on his acquisition. Sad to see it go after being in Jim & Peggy’s family for so many years, but glad to see it in the hands of a British car enthusiast.

Got an invitation from John & Rita to join them for a small car show for residents of a retirement facility near Clackamas Town Center. We drove the B Roadster and Drakes drove their MGA. There was a good variety of all makes and years, including another MGA, a Hillman Minx and a Rolls-Royce to round out the British contingent. The earliest car was a 1917 Ford, latest model was a 1988 Callo-way Twin Turbo Corvette. Lots of the residents had connec-tions to the cars on display, including one frisky gal who had some rather risqué memories and tried to talk John Drake into a ride in his MGA. This was politely but firmly declined so off she went on her scooter! What a hoot! We didn’t know there would be awards, but we got an honorable mention prize and a goody bag. We capped off the day with dinner at the Heritage Pub, yummy mac & cheese! Thanks, John & Rita for inviting us on this adventure!

Happy to say the fleet (as Sondra calls it) is all at home in the new shop. I had the coupe at Keith’s for several weeks in-stalling a 5-speed transmission. Part of this task was to im-prove on the Moss Motors installation instructions for this product, so we had lots of “fun” figuring several things out. Drove it home with no problems, glad to have it back in the lineup. It needs a few outings to get used to the smooth shift-ing and extra gear. Next shop project is new roll-up doors and after that a lift. Life is good!
