Finding your story in The StoryCalvary introduces new chronological Bible series this fall

Have you ever felt like Martha? She tried to serve Jesus through busyness versus simply enjoying a relationship with Him.

Have you ever felt like Job? He questioned the role of suffering in the world and couldn’t

seem to escape its impact on his own life.Or have you ever felt like Paul? Despite a

long time of condemning the Christian faith, he discovered the power of Jesus through an amazing conversion experience.

There are many biblical people with whom our lives resonate. And, beginning this fall,

we’ll venture together on a quest to find, understand and celebrate our own stories in God’s story.

Using the best-selling book The Story, we’ll experience the events and people of the Bible as one seamless narrative. The Story uses a chronological and “bite-size” approach that will help us not only recognize ourselves in Scripture, but also bring such lessons and learnings into the very heart of our daily lives.

“The Story is not just a book about the Bible. It’s an actual rendition of the Bible,” said Steve Dornbusch, senior pastor. “That’s what will make this series so powerful, and I can’t wait for Calvary to live into and live out the Word like never before.”

Just how can you get the most out of The Story? We have a lot of exciting things in the works, and you’ll want to be part of it all:

The mission of Calvary Lutheran Church is to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. We live out this mission through a commitment to Worship, Grow and Serve.

• Worship - We are prayerfully committed to singing, reading and creatively displaying and teaching God’s Word, so that all worshippers might have a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

• Grow - We are prayerfully committed to fostering authenticity, biblical encouragement and accountability,

uncompartmentalized devotion to Christ and the motivation to serve.

• Serve - We are prayerfully committed to identifying and employing the spiritual gifts of all believers, empowering members to lead in ministry, affirming Christ-like service as a lifestyle versus a program, and reaching unbelievers with the love of Christ.

you need to know about what we’re doing at Calvary. While you’re there, also make sure to take our “biblical people poll” and to share how your family is enjoying The Story together.

Share The Story with others. Throughout The Story, remember the people in your

life who might really need the insight and encouragement that the series has to offer… then invite them to Calvary! Just like the Good News of Jesus, it’s just too good and too important to keep to ourselves. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of The Story and to share it!

difficult times for Calvary, it has been one of the best experi-ences of my life. This place has a wonderful, dedi-cated staff and an awesome congre-gation committed to leading others into a growing relationship with Jesus. Thank you for letting me serve!

Jeff Johnson

Dear Friends, By the time you receive this issue of

Calvary Calls, you’ll probably be gearing up in many ways for the fall. If you have kids, you’ve already shopped for clothes, supplies and all of the little things that are needed when another school year begins. And you’ve received all sorts of mail about organizations, groups, etc., that are starting another fall season. Certainly, it is no less true at church. We at Calvary are excited to start another year of ministry together… and you’ll find many of the details here!

Because our Welcome Day (see page 1) falls on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we’ll also do some special things to commemorate that milestone and to pay special tribute to our local fire, police and EMT personnel during worship (see page 16). That morning’s message will be “Defining Moments.” We’ll also continue the tradition of our “bless-ing of the backpacks” (see page 16). That’s when we ask our kids to bring their school backpacks to worship, then come forward for a special blessing to help them prepare for their school or preschool experience.

The big news for this fall is the kickoff of The Story (see page 1). Throughout these next months, we’ll read a chronological account of the Bible stories from beginning to end. I think you’ll find this to be one of the most meaningful things we’ll ever do at Calvary and something that will help you and your family to learn, talk about, study and enjoy Scripture. One of the changes that will accompany this emphasis will be the addi-tion of a “worship-release” Grace Place at our 11:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday worship services. These Grace Place offerings—in addition to Thursday night—will be devoted to helping children follow along with The Story, too. I’m so thankful to our Children’s Ministry staff for their willingness to add these special options.

As we begin our fall program, one of the areas we want to deepen and expand is our prayer ministry. I’m praying that we’ll be able to add many more men to our Prayer Warrior program, and I’m also hoping that we can begin several other groups that will help us be an even more “prayer-filled” congregation. Keep listening for more op-

portunities along that line.

You might receive this Calvary Calls before the special Calvary Team Meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 31. We’ll gather in the Sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. to talk about the challenges and opportunities that are before us in the years to come at Calvary. I hope you’ll make it a priority to be there as we examine the future God has for us here at Calvary—a fu-ture that I believe is filled with promise and excitement.

Have a great fall! Your Friend and Pastor,

Steve Dornbusch Senior Pastor

unanimously recommended Carol Skjegstad for that position and the congregation unani-mously agreed with that recommendation at a special meeting this summer.

With Carol’s hiring, we saw an opportunity to thoroughly review the roles and responsi-bilities of each of our pastors at Calvary and have made some changes to best fit each pastor’s gifts and passion with his or her job description.

And we watched this summer as a beauti-ful columbarium became a permanent part of Calvary Park—the culmination of more than five years of hard work by many dedi-cated volunteers at Calvary.

This will be my last Calvary Calls sub-mission as your congregation president. Although my two-year term included some

Calvary—even during the “slow” months of summer. And as we move into an even busier fall, let me update you on some of the great things that are happening here.

After meeting for several months, Calvary’s Worship Vision Team came forward with some broad recommendations regard-ing the future of worship services at Calvary. We are working hard to see that those recommendations are implemented over the course of this fall and don’t simply become another forgotten report.

A call committee was also busy this spring reviewing resumes and meeting with candi-dates for a full-time associate pastor posi-tion at Calvary. In the end, the committee

Participate in “A Baby Changes Everything” Christmas concert

Mark your calendars now for this year’s exciting Evening of Expressions Christmas concert: A Baby Changes Everything! This is your chance to sing or play beautiful music with a large choir and full orches-tra for Calvary’s annual Christmas worship event on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 4 and 6:30 p.m. On top of the Expressions Choir’s regular Wednesday rehearsal time (6:15-7:45 p.m.) in the Chapel, additional choir rehearsals will be held on Sunday evenings in the Music Auditorium starting Oct. 24 from 5-6 p.m. with childcare available. The choir will also present this program to the Salvation Army’s Harbor Light program on Sunday, Dec. 18. If you’d like to use your vocal or instrumen-tal skills to celebrate the Christmas season in a special way, contact Dan Oie at [email protected] or 763.231.2944.

Worship leaders wanted! You may have heard the terms “Worship,

Grow, Serve” around Calvary. You may have heard our pastors preach about feeling God “nudge” you forward. Calvary’s music and worship department offers you a chance to worship, grow and serve, and put those “God nudges” into action! Calvary needs you if you have musical gifts and a heart for helping to usher God’s people into worship. We’re looking for eager volun-teers with talents in singing, guitar, bass, drums, brass, winds, strings, piano, organ,

keyboard and media technology for both our traditional and contemporary services. With musical opportunities for ages 4-100, everyone can add their “praise to the Lord!” at Calvary. See below for informa-tion on the vocal and instrumental ensem-bles available at Calvary, or contact Dan Oie at [email protected] or 763.231.2944 to set up an audition time on Sept. 26 or 27 from 4–8 p.m. to discuss opportunities for cantoring, instrumental solos or singing on the worship team.

Take a journey through the Bible: Read La HistoriaTo begin our third year of Spanish worship services and ministry to the

Latino people living in our community, we will be reading The Story or La Historia in Spanish. We are so grateful that this book has been translated and is available to everyone. All of our families, children included, are excited to be taking the same journey as the English-speaking congrega-tion. We pray that during our journey through God’s story, our faith will be strengthened, lives will be transformed, God’s story will come alive, and we will be encouraged to share His-story with others. Come and listen to God’s story and be blessed!

Praise at any age! There’s no need to audition for any of our

ensembles, but we’d love to meet you! Feel free to attend any rehearsal and check out our various musical opportunities. Children’s choir registration forms and schedules can be found online at calvary.org/kidsmusic or outside Calvary’s music office.

Women’s Retreat March 2-4, 2012 Mount Carmel

Watch calvary.org/women for details.

It was after a summer worship service in Calvary Park when a simple conversation with Sharon Lindau, the Women’s Ministry director at the time, started the process of bringing MOPS to Calvary. At the time, I had a preschooler and another child on the way. I asked Sharon if we could consider starting something for young moms here at Calvary. I had been very involved in many things at Calvary and now that I was a mother, I re-ally wanted to connect with other moms at Calvary. Sharon and I decided to look into MOPS and that was how it all started. MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers and is an international organization meeting in more than 3,800 churches in the U.S. and 32 other countries.

As I look back, I can hardly believe my simple conversation was the start of what turned into an incredible ministry, which is

now at its 10-year anniversary mark. Over the past 10 years, the MOPS ministry has ministered to hundreds of moms and kids. Calvary’s MOPS group is a ministry that reaches beyond Calvary’s walls. In fact, each year a third or more moms involved in MOPS do not attend Calvary. MOPS International focuses on meeting the needs of mothers of preschoolers, because when you impact a mom, you impact her family and ultimately the world. Better moms make a better world. The MOPS program at Calvary has certainly made an impact.

Anyone who has been involved in the MOPS ministry in any way is invited to join us to celebrate this milestone. We are working on contacting anyone who has been part of this ministry, so help us spread the word.

Learn how easy it is to serve and make a difference in someone else’s life. During the morning of Sunday, Sept. 25, we will have several options set up that are quick and easy serve projects. Many people have told us that serving is a great way to connect with others, family members or friends.

We will divide laundry soap and dish soap into smaller quantities for our local food shelves and make and/or sign cards for mis-sionaries and people in the military.

Join other volunteers and help for as long or as short of a time as you have.

English Language Learner classThursdays beginning Sept. 15, 5:30–8 p.m., Room N206Mondays beginning Sept. 19, 5:30–8 p.m., Room N204

Last spring when Calvary offered this class, we had people join us who spoke many different languages—Japanese, Spanish and Russian, to name a few. A total of 20 peo-ple attended classes and improved their English. The participants are very commit-ted to learning English; one woman from Russia walked one hour each way with her two year-old child in a stroller to attend class. Another participant started attending our 11:15 a.m. worship service and enrolled her children in Music Camp this summer and Grace Place this fall. This has been a great outreach to our immigrant neighbors.

Calvary will once again host the Winnetka Learning Center’s English Language Learner class. Classes are on Monday and Thursday

evenings. Childcare is available. If you know of someone who is interested in learning or improving their English, invite them to call 763.504.8300.

If you are interested in working with the participants while they practice their English or helping out with childcare, contact Dawn Dresser at [email protected] or 763.231.2988.

To learn more about the program, all are invited to an ice cream social.

Feed Haiti 2012 We are again packing meals for Haiti.

This year we have scheduled this church-wide event in February. We need to start thinking about how to raise the funds for these meals. Meal costs have gone up from 19 cents to 24 cents. Thus, everyone needs to think about how to raise funds for these meals. Here are some ways families can par-ticipate together to raise funds:

• Hold a garage sale with the proceeds going to Feed Haiti.

• Collect items from neighbors and then sell those items to raise funds.

• Have a lemonade stand. • Host a hot chocolate party at your

home and ask your guests to donate to Feed Haiti 2012.

• Go door to door in your neighborhood and ask people to donate money; maybe ask them for the loose change they have in the house.

These are just a few ideas to start all of us thinking about raising funds to pay for the meals. These are great family projects.

Chuck Seifert helps with clean-up in North Minneapolis.

September/October 2011 MISSION & OUTREACH Page 7

10:14-15, is to create environ-ments that will allow friendship and relation-ship build-ing between the Church and Somali community.

Having worked with Somalis in the Twin Cities since 2005, Sherry feels called to share the message of God’s love and is uniquely positioned to reach since as she possesses understanding of their culture and religious beliefs.

Additionally, Sherry is a nationally recog-nized speaker and is called upon through-out the U.S. to speak at conferences, teaching people about Somali culture and how to reach out to them.

Calvary reaches out to immigrant churches & communitiesOn the Way: The story of a multicultural mission church (1999–2011)By Dr. Wayne Stumme

On the first Sunday in Advent, 1999, the Rev. Carol Stumme became interim pastor at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church located in North Minneapolis. The congregation had declined greatly, and Pastor Carol was ex-pected to close its doors. But God had other plans for this church. She had served an inner-city congregation in Columbus, Ohio, and she believed that Luther Memorial also had a mission to the unchurched.

With the support of the remaining mem-bers, Pastor Carol began mission outreach to the surrounding community. She had con-tact with Hmong Lutherans in St. Paul and, in early 2001, several families joined the church. With the help of the Nengyia Her and Bee Vang families, they welcomed oth-er Hmong families. Joining persons of other ethnicities, Hmong people soon became the largest single group in the congregation.

Contributing to the growth of this multi-cultural mission congregation are its pro-grams for children and youth. Even more important has been the weekly worship ser-vice, which is conducted in English and with the Gospel and prayers offered in Hmong. Preaching focuses on the grace of God made known in Christ. Twice a month, there is a Hmong language worship service following the regular service.

Pastor Nengyia Her, one of Luther

Immigrant churches in Minneapolis

Besides reaching out to the metro area’s Somali community, Pastor Steve Dornbusch and Calvary’s mission ministry have done much to lend spiritual and monetary sup-port to immigrant churches.

• Holy Trinity Lutheran is a Swahili minis-try located on East 31st Street in Minneapolis and is led by Pastor Andrea Mwalilino.

• An Ethiopian ministry led by Rev. Beko and located in St. Paul is the Evangelical Mekane Yesus Church Fellowship in Minnesota.

• Another Ethiopian ministry is located on Riverside Avenue on the West Bank in Minneapolis. Its name is Trinity Lutheran Congregation and is led by Pastor Alem.

• Luther Memorial Church, located in North Minneapoilis, has a Hmong ministry. (see story to the right).

• Pastor Judith Vanosdahl leads a diverse congregation, El Milagro Lutheran, in south Minneapolis. In a letter to Pastor Steve, she wrote, “El Milagro would not be the (Miracle on 38th Street) without Calvary’s Mission Partner Support.”

• Another immigrant church is Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church, shep-herded by Pastors Negeri and Chala. After a meeting with Pastor Steve and our Mission & Outreach Department, Pastor Negeri wrote, “In the family of Christ, all of us are very important, and we have something to contribute in order to edify each other and encourage each other on our faith journey.”

All these churches have three things in common:

• Inspirational communities worshipping our Lord and Risen Savior.

• Led by devoted pastors.• Struggling financially. We have given over $51,000 to the above

churches so their congregations can con-tinue to operate. Pastor Steve has met with these pastors many times to learn about their faith communities and their needs.

A couple months ago Rev. Dr. Buba, a na-tional church leader of the African commu-nities and now the mission director of the North American Lutheran Church, spoke at Calvary and shared his prayers and proph-ecy that the “best years for Calvary are yet to come.”

With this inspiration, Calvary’s mission and outreach program continues to meet the needs of people as we have done for more than 60 years.

Pastor Carol & Intern Pastor Bee Vang leading services at Luther Memorial.

Calvary’s missionary to the Minnesota Somali population

Memorial’s members and a graduate of Luther Seminary, served as pastor of Luther Memorial in 2010 until his death earlier this year. A second member, Bee Vang, is finish-ing seminary this summer, and we expect to call him as pastor later this year.

We have received support and encourage-ment from a number of mission partners, Calvary being among the first and most faithful. We remain confident that God will bless us in the future as we continue our journey in faith, love and hope. Grateful for all that we have received, we take up the work of mission to which He has called us in this place.

Shahrazad (Sherry) Mohamed is one of Calvary’s members and missionaries.

Originally from Somalia, she came to faith in Jesus in 1998, having come from a Muslim background.

Sherry and her son, Hamdi, came to the U.S. in early 2000 and resided in Orlando, Fla. At that time, she went through spiritual growth and experienced transformation. She felt called to pursue further training and went to Asbury Theological Seminary, graduating with a Master of Divinity degree. Her passion is to reach out to the Muslim community and minister to them here in Minnesota. Almost 100 percent of Somalis are Muslims, and there are approximately 70,000 Somalis in the state of Minnesota.

Sherry is the founder and program di-rector for Rajo (Somali word for “Hope”) Ministries through World Relief Minnesota. Rajo’s focus is to build bridges between the church and the Somali community to nur-ture relationships that reveal God’s love. Rajo Ministries’ vision, based on Romans

Outdoor columbarium complete; dedication set for Sept. 18

As of August, Calvary’s memorial prayer garden and outdoor columbarium are com-plete. Situated on the northwest corner of Calvary Park, the structure will serve not only as a lasting monument for cremated remains, but also as a peaceful place for anyone seeking quiet contemplation and prayer.

Join us for a brief dedication service on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 12:15 p.m. For more information about the columbarium and/or to reserve a niche, visit calvary.org/colum-barium or call Jane Olson at 763.544.5965. 9th annual benefit golf tournament

Saturday, Sept. 17, 8 a.m., Brookview Help us send kids to Camp Wapo! Please

join us for the 9th Annual Cubano Konkurranse golf tournament to benefit the Nick Duelo Camper Scholarship Fund. This fun, laid-back tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Brookview Golf Course’s Par 3. Shotgun start will be at 8 a.m., with a brunch and off-the-course fellowship to follow in Calvary’s Gathering Room.

Friends of Nick from Luther College designed this event as a way to honor and memorialize Nick’s spirit following his death in a car accident in 2003. The goal of the founding group was to embody two traits they loved in Nick—having fun and encourag-

ing others to grow in their faith. Nick grew up at Calvary and served as a TIM teamer and counselor at Camp Wapo.

The tournament’s goal is fundraising, heavy on the fun! This is a no-pressure, four-person shotgun scramble format. Your $35 fee will include golf, brunch and a tax-de-ductible donation to the scholarship endow-ment fund. Please register by Friday, Sept. 9. There’s also an opportunity for people or organizations to sponsor a hole. To reg-ister or to make a donation, or if you really want to know just what Cubano Konkurranse means, contact 763.588.4419 or [email protected].

Parents—not just for carpooling anymoreExperiencing the blessings of volunteering

Left to right: Darrin, Hope, Paige, Lezlie and Blake Northagen

In our society, we drop off kids for many things. We drop them off for sports and les-sons, for art and school activities, sometimes even for church. We feel the pressure to get our kids involved but, in the meantime, are we really involved and engaged ourselves?

Calvary member Lezlie Northagen found that getting involved instead of just drop-ping off her kids has paid off in many ways. She’s been involved with the MOPS steer-ing committee, worship team, confirma-tion, Grace Place and Lenten portrayals at Calvary. Through volunteering, she has established amazing friendships, especially with other families with kids her kids’ ages.

Lezlie also feels that the experiences are character building, not only for herself, but also for her whole family.

“Giving is essential because giving is what Jesus taught us—then our kids watch us,” says Lezlie. “As a parent, volunteering is one way to be a great example to my kids of how to serve others.”

And, because of her role modeling, Lezlie has seen her children take an interest in volunteering themselves.

“It is very important to me that my chil-dren volunteer and experience the differ-ence they can make in someone’s life,” she adds. “I consider it one of our family values.”

Lezlie and her family have seen firsthand how getting involved in people’s lives makes a lasting, rewarding impact. And it’s a way to live out one’s faith.

“I feel deep down that God has called us to volunteer and to help one another. God has designed and called us to serve one an-other. We are not to hoard our gifts, but to use them for others,” says Lezlie.

Like Lezlie, you can find ways to make a difference at Calvary. Here’s how:

1. Enroll in Calvary’s new gifts discovery classes to learn where you and your gifts can make the most difference. See page 5 for more details.

2. Explore the many opportunities available at Calvary to volunteer—this issue of Calvary Calls showcases a lot of them!

3. Get involved and see how blessing others blesses you!

Calvary’s Endowment receives Lindberg Legacy gift

Leland & Muriel Lindberg

This summer, the Calvary Endowment Fund received a substantial gift from the estate of Leland and Muriel Lindberg. This gift, totalling more than $265,000, will be put into a new fund under the Endowment Funds umbrella, increasing the number of individual funds to seven and also increasing the total size of our Endowment to nearly $1,300,000. The generosity and foresight of the Lindbergs will bless Calvary for years to come.

The gift is an example of forward-think-ing generosity and it has come with well thought-out direction for its use. The es-tate documents specify that the funds will be used for “the furtherance of the youth program” at Calvary, thus the new fund will

be named the “Leland and Muriel Lindberg Youth Fund.” The gift also comes with spe-cific instructions regarding the payment of monies from the fund. In the first five years, only earnings will be distributed; in the fol-lowing years, earnings plus 10 percent of the original principle amount will be distributed, with the ultimate goal being to pay out all principle, thus extinguishing the Fund over time.

Calvary is grateful for the Lindberg’s legacy of generosity and support for Calvary and its youth as demonstrated by this size-able gift. We can only begin to imagine how students’ lives will be touched by ministries made possible through this Fund.

Clothing drive for the militaryBy Dorree Adelmann

Join us in a clothing drive sponsored by the Ministry for the Military committee. During the month of October, we will collect clothing to be adapted for wounded military veterans.

Many times a veteran may come back from the war with a shattered limb. These injuries require large fixators, prosthet-ics and casts that are too bulky to fit under ordinary clothing and underwear. Sew Much Comfort is an organization that provides adaptive clothing at no cost to our wounded service members. Without adaptive clothing, the only option for them is a hospital gown for weeks, even months.

Here’s how it works. Organizations such as ours collect clothing. Donations are then sent to Sew Much Comfort headquarters in Colorado where they send them out to seamstresses who put Velcro in the seams so the soldiers can easily get the clothing on and off. An example of this clothing will be at the Ministry to the Military table in the Atrium.

Sew Much Comfort collects the finished garments and then distributes them to hos-pitals around the country as needed. They have produced and delivered more than 95,000 items of adaptive clothing to our injured since they began in December 2004. Visit their Web site at sewmuchcomfort.org for more information. Last winter, Calvary collected 147 pieces for wounded military—let’s get even more this year!

We will collect clothing in a bin at the Ministry to the Military bulletin board during the month of October. All garments should be current and new. Clothing items needed are basketball shorts, boxers, tees, polo shirts, long-sleeve tees, sweatshirts, pajama bottoms and fabrics.

For more details, visit calvary.org/military. Any questions, contact Dorree Adelmann at [email protected] or 763.231.2973.

September/October 2011 712 MINISTRIES Page 11

Church life is busyBy Bryan McInnis

As we turn our minds towards fall, it’s easy to start thinking about the many Calvary programs on the horizon: Welcome Day, Grace Place, Confirmation, etc. But in the midst of our many wonderful programs, we can easily lose sight of the fact that it is the people of Calvary who make our pro-grams what they are.

Pam Anderson has been a fixture in the Calvary community for quite some time, serving across the spectrum of our children and youth programs. This fall, Pam will be transitioning from serving in our confirma-tion ministry and stepping into our senior high ministry as a small group leader. Pam was gracious enough to share some of the things God has taught her along her volun-teering journey.

Q: What was it like seeing a confirma-tion class through from 7th to 9th grade?

A: At first it felt like it was a huge com-mitment and I thought, “Wow, can I really do this for three whole years?” But the time went very quickly. It was fun to see the stu-dents grow over the course of three years.

Q: How did you feel as you prepared to serve as an adult leader on our senior high trip to Florida this past summer?

A: I am always concerned that I won’t have the “right answer” to the “tough questions” that kids might raise. But I have found when I humbled myself and not put unnecessary pressure on myself to know the answer, it worked out better.

Q: Talk a bit about moving into a volun-teer role with senior high this fall? What are you excited about?

A: I am excited about helping the youth take their faith to a deeper level during a very critical time in their lives as they are faced with very real challenges. It’s tough out there for kids these days… What better time to get involved in their lives and help them see how God can guide their steps.

We are excited to welcome Pam as one of our newest senior high (Current) small group leaders. If you are considering serving students in our junior or senior high ministries, please feel free to contact one of Calvary’s youth directors. And be sure to heed Pam’s advice…

“Pray about it. If you’re feeling a “nudge,” it’s probably something God is call-ing you to do—don’t listen to all the internal voices about time, experience, knowledge, etc. God equips the called! Trust me you will be blessed richly by your service.”

Check out Friday IgniteFriday Ignite is a fun and safe place for

7th and 8th graders to hang out on Friday nights from 6–8 p.m. throughout the school year. It is free and no registration is required. All you need to do is show up. And remember you can always bring friends with you! At Friday Ignite you can play ping pong, pool, Apples to Apples, card games, air hockey and so much more. A concession stand is open with pizza, candy and pop. At 7 p.m., Melanie does a short devotion with the students.

Adult leaders are needed at Friday Ignite to make it happen. Donna and Phil Bradbury have been Friday Ignite volunteers for two years. Here is what they said when asked about their experience.

Q. How did you get involved in helping with Friday Ignite?

A. We chose to get involved because it was an activity that allowed us to be in-volved with our son without making a large time commitment.

Q. What did you do at Friday Ignite as an adult leader?

A. We helped with the concession stand. The food is purchased by the kids but it is all reasonably priced. Yes, some kids loaded up on sugar and caffeine, but there are bet-ter choices like yummy pizza and pretzels, too. If your kid was rather hyper when you picked them up at 8 p.m., well, you can thank us.

Q. What was your favorite part of be-ing a Friday Ignite adult leader?

A. Our favorite part was getting to know some of the other kids and reconnecting with others that we worked with in Grace Place. The kids may even think you are cool, like the time we told them how we researched and found out that Twix bars are legally food. Yes, parents, you can thank us for that, too.

Q. Would you encourage other adults/parents to be adult leaders at Friday Ignite?

A. Yes, it is a short time-frame to help out with a great group of kids and it is FUN!

If you would like to get involved with Friday Ignite as a adult volunteer, contact Melanie Racer. A full schedule of Friday Ignite is available at calvary.org/ignite.

Changing currentsBy Sarah Burton

This July I went on an Alaskan cruise with my family—a long-time dream of my dad’s. I had never before experienced pro-longed time at sea, so this trip opened my eyes to tidal currents and the necessity of changing tides and currents for the whole ecosystem.

Calvary’s senior high ministry is called Current, a fitting title as we work to-gether to impact our community in Jesus’ name, but also in the necessity for life-giving change. As a youth staff we’ve looked at statistics of church kids once they’ve gone on to adulthood, and it tells us something isn’t right. We’ve prayed, researched and invited insight from other ministry professionals and realized it’s time for changing Current.

Starting Sunday, Sept. 18, Current will meet on the first and third Sunday of each month for music, a brief message and extended small group time. Current Groups (formerly known as Cell Groups), will also meet on the off weeks to con-tinue conversation and growth. Meeting Sunday nights allows older students to serve at Wednesday Night Live, mentor younger students and avoid weeknight conflicts with extracurricular activities. This change also enables senior high pro-gramming to continue through Lent. Visit: calvary.org/current to register.

I’m not an ecologist, and there are places my analogy falls apart, but I’m excited about the opportunity for new life that accompanies changing currents. We value your prayers for our students as we seek to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ.

Junior high mission trip (grades 7–8) June 17–22, 2012, St. Paul, Minn.

We will go through Youthworks! to see and meet the needs in “our own backyard.” This will be the third time our junior high youth have done a summer mission trip in the Cities. Each trip has had a lasting impact on our students. We will be doing light yard work, working with kids, visiting elderly in nursing homes and helping at soup kitch-ens. Space is limited to 50 students and 10 adult leaders. Sign-up for the trip begins on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Contact Melanie Racer, [email protected], 763.231.2972, with questions.

Wednesday Night Live confirmation kickoffWednesday, Sept. 21, 6:30-8 p.m.For all students, parents and leaders

If you have not registered for confir-mation, please do so as soon as possible. Classes are currently being assigned. A registration form is available at calvary.org/confirmation or at Calvary. Contact Kathy Brown, confirmation director, with any questions at [email protected] or 763.231.2971.

We need many small group leaders for Wednesday Night Live. If you have a passion for working with students and would like more information about being a confirmation small group leader, contact Kathy Brown.

The congregation is invited to join in the celebration of the

Senior high summer trip (grades 9-12)Mexico, July 7-15, 2012

Remembering Sept. 11, honoring our heroes

Sept. 11, 2001. It’s one of those dates when people are likely to remember exactly where they were, what they were doing and who they were with when our country came under attack and thousands of lives were lost.

Sept. 11, 2011. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy—a milestone

that deserves pause, reflection… and gratitude for the people whom God has called and equipped to protect us and our community.

In that spirit, dur-ing our Sept. 11 worship services, we at Calvary will take some time not only to remember those who perished in the at-tacks, but also to lift up and thank the men and women of our local fire and police departments as

well as EMT. If you are such a public servant, we

invite you to receive our appreciation for your work and sacrifice. Attend any one of our morning services, and we’ll simply invite you to stand at a particular time during our time together. You’re welcome to dress in uniform or street clothes—whichever you prefer—and to bring fam-ily, friends and co-workers to share in the experience.

If you’re not involved with local EMT, fire or law enforcement, but know others who are, please spread the word. It promises to be a meaningful morning for the heroes among us.

Recognition of Local EMT, Fire & Police Departments

Sunday, Sept. 11 Worship Services

Blessing of the backpacksWhether you’ve got a backpack, bag or

bucket ready for school or preschool, bring it to worship services on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 11, to receive a special blessing… and a gift!

Know that wherever you go—including back to school—God is with you!
