Ps. 18.I will love thee, O Lord, my strength: the Lord is mystony rock, my fortress, and my Saviour. Glory be tothe Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Asit was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be:world without end. Amen. THE sorrows of death

    Or

IG 23. Ps. 18.Ant. THE WAVES of death compassedme, / and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

1 I love thee, O LORD, my strength. / The LORD is

my stony rock, my defence, and my Saviour;2 My God, and my might, in whom I will trust; /my shield, the horn also of my salvation, and myrefuge.

3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to bepraised; / so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

4 The waves of death compassed me, / and thefloods of ungodliness made me afraid.

5 The cords of hell came about me; / the snares ofdeath overtook me.

6 In my trouble I called upon the LO R D , / andcomplained unto my God.

7 So he heard my voice out of his holy temple, /and my complaint before him entered into his ears.

    THE COLLECT.

LORD, we beseech thee favourably to hear theprayers of thy people: that we, who are justly

punished for our offences; may be mercifully deliveredby thy goodness, for the glory of thy Name; throughJesus Christ our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth withthee and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world withoutend. Amen.

    THE EPISTLE.1 Corinthians 9. 24.

RETHREN: Know ye not that they which run in arace run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run

that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth forthe mastery is temperate in all things: now they do it toobtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. I

therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not asone that beateth the air: but I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be acastaway.

BCP: Ps. 119, Pt 4. MY soul cleaveth to the dust; / Oquicken thou me, according to thy word.

26 I have acknowledged my ways, and thouheardest me: / O teach me thy statutes.

27 Make me to understand the way of thy precepts;/ and so shall I meditate upon thy wondrous works.28 My soul melteth away for very heaviness: /

comfort thou me according unto thy word.29 Take from me the way of lying, / and graciously

grant me thy law.30 I have chosen the way of truth, / and thy

judgements have I laid before me.31 I cleave unto thy testimonies: / O LORD,

    confound me not.

32 I will run the way of thy commandments, / whenthou hast set my heart at liberty.

THE GOSPEL. St Matthew 20. 1.

ND Jesus spake unto them another parable, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man

that is an householder, which went out early in themorning to hire labourers into his vineyard. Andwhen he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a

day, he sent them into his vineyard. And he went outabout the third hour, and saw others standing idle inthe marketplace, and said unto them, Go ye also intothe vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.And they went their way. Again he went out aboutthe sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And aboutthe eleventh hour he went out, and found others

standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye hereall the day idle? They say unto him, Because no manhath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into thevineyard, and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saithunto his steward, Call the labourers, and give themtheir hire, beginning from the last unto the first. Andwhen they came that were hired about the eleventhhour, they received every man a penny. But when thefirst came, they supposed that they should havereceived more; and they likewise received every man apenny. And when they had received it, theymurmured against the good-man of the house, saying,These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast

made them equal unto us, which have borne theburden and heat of the day. But he answered one ofthem, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong; didst notthou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is,and go thy way; I will give unto this last even as untothee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will withmine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So thelast shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

    Creed is said.

RETHREN: Whereinsoever any is bold, (I speakfoolishly,) I am bold also. Are they Hebrews? so

am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of

Abraham? so am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (Ispeak as a fool,) I am more: in labours more abundant;in stripes above measure; in prisons more frequent; indeaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I fortystripes save one; thrice was I beaten with rods; oncewas I stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck; a night and aday I have been in the deep; in journeyings often; inperils of waters; in perils of robbers; in perils by mineown countrymen; in perils by the heathen; in perils inthe city; in perils in the wilderness; in perils in the sea;in perils among false brethren; in weariness andpainfulness; in watchings often; in hunger and thirst;in fastings often; in cold and nakedness; besides thosethings that are without, that which cometh upon medaily, the care of all the churches. Who is weak, and Iam not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?

THE GOSPEL. St Luke 8. 4.

HEN much people were gathered together, andwere come to [Jesus] out of every city, he spake

by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed; and ashe sowed, some fell by the way-side, and it wastrodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.And some fell upon a rock, and as soon as it wassprung up, it withered away, because it lacked

moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thornssprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell ongood ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit anhundred-fold. And when he had said these things, hecried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

And his disciples asked him, saying, What mightthis parable be? Andhe said, Unto you it is given toknow the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but toothers in parables; that seeing they might not see, andhearing they might not understand. Now the parableis this: The seed is the word of God. Those by theway-side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, andtaketh away the word out of their hearts, lest theyshould believe, and be saved. They on the rock are

they which, when they hear, receive the word withjoy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that whichfell among thorns are they which, when they haveheard, go forth, and are choked with cares, and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit toperfection. But that on the good ground are theywhich in an honest and good heart, having heard theword, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

    Creed is said.

    THE COLLECT.

LORD, who hast taught us that all our doingswithout charity are nothing worth: send thy Holy

Spirit, and pour into our hearts that most excellent giftof charity, the very bond of peace and of all virtues;without which whosoever liveth is counted deadbefore thee. Grant this for thine only Son JesusChrist's sake, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in theunity of the same Holy Ghost, ever one God, worldwithout end. Amen.

goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body tobe burned, and have not charity, it profiteth menothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charityenvieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffedup, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not herown, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, rejoicethnot in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth allthings, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endurethall things.

Charity never faileth: but whether there beprophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shallvanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesyin part. But when that which is perfect is come, then

that which is in part shall be done away. When I wasa child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, Ithought as a child; but when I became a man, I putaway childish things. For now we see in a glass darkly;but then face to face: now I know in part; but thenshall I know even as also I am known. And nowabideth faith, hope, charity, these three: but thegreatest of these is charity.

he shall rise again. And they understood none of thesethings: and this saying was hid from them, neitherknew they the things which were spoken.

And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh untoJericho, a certain blind man sat by the way-sidebegging: and hearing the multitude pass by, he askedwhat it meant. And they told him, that Jesus ofNazareth passeth by. And he cried, saying, Jesus, thouSon of David, have mercy on me. And they whichwent before rebuked him, that he should hold his

peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son ofDavid, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood, andcommanded him to be brought unto him: and when hewas come near, he asked him, saying, What wilt thouthat I should do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that Imay receive my sight. And Jesus said unto him,Receive thy sight; thy faith hath saved thee. And
