HOME MATTERS.As a part of their fine exhibit at the fair

this year M. Slason & Son will show thefamous World's Fair Wegrnan piano, which is now on its way to Malone.

Frost did considerable damage to grow-ing crops on Adirondack farms Fridaynight. As far south as Orange, Sullivanand Delaware counties the freeze seems tohave been harder than further north.

Eddie Desautel, son of Edward Desautelwho has been employed for several yearsby F. S. Cliannell, had the tips of his fin-gers on both hands caught in the rolls ofa paper machine at the paper mill on Sun-day and lost the tip of the middle fingeron both hands. Dr. Oliver dressed thewounds.

Capt. Miller, of Co. E., has appointedthe following recruiting conainitte for theensuing year; Sergeants Collins andGenaway, Corporal Fell and Private Gib-son. The company is now without lien-tenants, Mr. Hale having resigned andMr. Shears removed from town. Thurs-day, Oct. 2nd, has been fixed as the datefor the election of their successors.

Miss Florence Boyce, eldest daughter ofMr. and Mrs. S. G. Boyce, of this village, who graduated from Franklin Acaademyin June, has determined to follow a pro-fession and has commenced the study oflaw in Dist. Atty. Main's office. Manyyoung ladies in the country are now be-coming lawyers and doctors. It is a finetraining and there seems to be a good fieldfor them in both lines.

Pi t tsburgh 's public schools did notopen till Tuesday of this week. One weekof summer to their credit! They have no"hops in Clinton county or still anotherweek would doubtless be added to the va-cation. The registration of Franklin Ac-ademy is now about 200. This will bematerially increased in a couple of weeks. The new year under Prin. Hodge is thusopening most auspiciously.

Jed Shova, arrested for selling liquor tominors, has waived examination and givenbail to appear before the grand jury. Thebail is $1,000. We understand that thelaw enforcement committee of t he Anti-Saloon League is assisting the complain-ant in the Shova case and that it will beprosecuted vigorously. A petition will bemade to the proper authorities asking foran order to cancel Shova's tax certificate^The evidence against Shova is said to beso strong that the charges cannot be safe-ly denied.

Mrs. J. B. Pitman, wife of the well"known clergyman, wbo served St. Mark'schurch in this village so ably for so manyyears, died at their home at Fishkill onthe Hudson on Friday last at an advancedage Mrs. Pitman was subject to hearidisease and attacks of paralysis. She wasa woman of great intelligence and refine-ment and the news has brought a pang ofsorrow to the heart of many an old anddear friend in Maloue, whose sympathygoes out to the aged minister who survivesher.

There was an interesting contest inHenry Carroll's market the other nightbetween. " J o Nick" and Roger Bushey. The man who could eat the most raw cu-cumbers in the shortest time proved to beJo. He ate seven and won a small wager. Then he ate a bunch of raw onions top ofthat quicker than Bushey and won anotherwager, notwithstanding that some ofBushey"s onions went into his pockets. But Bushey could beat Jo drinkingwater. He won the wager on water bydrinking eight glasses without sloping.

The Franklin County Medical Societyholds its semi-annual session at SaranacLake today (Tuesday.) Nuinerons paperswill be read from physicians in all partsof the county, among them Dr. Austin, ofTupper Lake, and Drs. Trudeau, Wicker,Brown, Baldwin and Kingbon, of Sara-

n a c Lake, and a banquet will be served atThe Riverside at 3;00 P. M. After anhour's session following the banquet, avisit will be made to the bacteriologicallaboratory and to the sanitarium. Dr.Grant, of Malone, is on the program for apaper on "Astigmatism."

A son of Ed. Prae, residing about twomiles north of Moira, wa^ipatantly killedin a peculiar manner last Saturday night. He had been to Bombay "with his fatherand on the way home he appeared to fallasleep. His father roused him up and hesaid he had |ost his hat. His father stopped

Prof. Allard, oar bandmaster, has en-gaged B. B. Twigley, of Indianapolis, toplay first violin in his orchestra this winter. The other members will be Malone musi-cians. Mr. Twigley is said to be a finemusician.

A full grown doe was found browsingwith the herd of cows belonging to theMasonic Home in Utica the other day.The animal had evidently wandered fromits haunts in the Adirondacks. It wascaptured and placed in an enclosure.

A young man named William Goodwinhad a close call at Morristown Friday. Hewas feeding a steam thresher, when abroken cylinder tooth flew and struckhim in the eye, putting it out. It is awonder that it did not pierce to the brain,

    C. W. Hyde &Co.'s fine store at thecorner of Main and Pearl streets is sub-stantially completed and they expect tomove in this week. The furnishings arevery handsome, making one of the mostattractive pharmacies in Northern NewYork.

Willis Van Wormer, one of the threebrothers found guilty of the murder ofPeter Hallenbeck, on Christmas eve last,is reported to be dying of quick consump-tion in the hospital at Dannemora prison. The other two are quite fat and apparent-ly in excellent health.

An order has been granted by JudgeStover revoking the liquor tax certificateheld by A. E. Emmousat Hogansburgh, because the application stated that he(Eramons) was alone' interested in thebusiness, whereas, it afterward appearedthat H. J.
