THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE SERENGETI GOLF & WILDLIFE ESTATE CHRISTMAS EDITION NO. 6 DECEMBER 2011

SERENGETI INSIDER

“Serengeti is looking forward to a year with positive go-forward momentum.”

This was a proclamation which I made in the December 2010 Serengeti

Insider……and today looking back, we could not have scripted 2011 any better to

have given effect to this statement.

Despite the changeability and unpredictability of circumstances and the world

economy, God had a plan. Today, in the things you are facing, you too can know

that God has a plan.

In 2011, Serengeti successfully hosted 101st SA Open Championship and thanks

to the great coverage that Serengeti received through the event that was televised

live to millions of viewers over four days, Serengeti has become a household

name with the golf watching public. Whether this was from the comfort of their

homes or by visiting our estate during the tournament, for others it simply became

a place of aspiration, to visit, to play golf or to call this their home. For us as

members of the Serengeti family, it was an honour and privilege to be awarded the

opportunity to stage this high profile event. Thank you to each and everyone

who participated or contributed to making this a huge success! Congratulations to

Hennie Otto, the winner of the 101st SA Open Championship and for being part of

Serengeti’s history- in-making.

The Yard at Serengeti, the anchor to the planned equestrian village was

conceived in 2011. This family owned and operated equestrian centre, will offer

top quality facilities for full stabling and riding.

After much anticipation, our first residential apartments, Whistling Thorn, was

released to the market with great response and support for the product. The

Quarter, our mixed use precinct with offices as the first phase, was also

showcased in November with an official release to the market planned for early

2012. For detailed information on any of these products, please visit our website.

At the end of 2011, the campus of Curro Serengeti will be complete for the arrival

of the classes of 2012. We wish the Curro Serengeti staff well in crossing the t’s

and dotting the i’s for the start of a journey.

We are grateful for the year 2011 that is now drawing to a close,

and it is with anticipation and boldness that we look forward to

starting 2012, capitalising on the positive go-forward momentum

of 2011, with exciting new residential products to be introduced.

May God bless you and your family over this festive

period with His unmerited grace and favour.

GREEN FINGER TIPS

Deon Van Rensburg

Serengeti Garden Centre

Deon van Rensburg, owner of the Serengeti plant nursery, has come up with an inspiring initiative to broaden the horizons of his little “farm” at Serengeti. Provision has been made in the nursery to showcase a variety of domestic gardening methods in order to create interest and provide educational tools to the enthusiastic gardener. One of these initiatives is the establishment of a permaculture garden in the nursery. For the uninitiated, the word „permaculture‟ is compounded from Permanence, Agriculture and Culture and is meant to describe a set of design tools that can be used to create sustainable systems for humans to live in harmony with the natural world. A permaculture garden aims at organic food production in a natural system wherein fruit and vegetable crops are allowed to grow in a process of natural selection, wherein natural symbiotic bonds between plant species, animals, bacteria and fungi are stimulated. The main benefits derived from this food production method are the elimination of external pest control measures and human interference in natural seasonal yields. Such a food garden is fertilized by organic kitchen waste and irrigated by rainwater harvesting measures. Needless to say, a permaculture garden is low-cost and low-maintenance orientated, with the added benefit of fresh organic produce at your kitchen doorstep! Serengeti residents will have the opportunity to learn more about permaculture gardening through a weekend course and workshop to be held on the weekend of the 4th and 5th of February, 2012, at the Serengeti nursery. The course will be presented and facilitated by Jamie Shepherd, an experienced and creative permaculture and hydrology expert currently based in St. Lucia, KZN. Jamie has been instrumental in initiating and driving a government-sponsored project in the area that has established nearly 200 authentic permaculture gardens for local people living in a village just outside St. Lucia in the Dukuduku Forest and trained them to maintain the gardens to improve food security and quality for the local people. The aim at the same time is to effect re-forestation by improving the condition of this fast-dwindling forest‟s degraded soil and plant undergrowth. You will be part of a team that actually sets up the first permaculture garden at the Serengeti nursery during the weekend, so expect to get your hands dirty and to work up a sweat. As a result, you will leave the course knowing exactly how to apply the theory and philosophy of permaculture to design and set up your own permaculture garden in a matter of only a couple of days. You will receive a free copy of Jamie‟s e-book 'The Lazy Man's Guide to Growing Highly Nutritious Food' when you book and pay for the workshop to help prepare you for it. For more information about the course and Jamie's e-book, see www.permaculturegarden.co.za or contact Jamie on 072-042-2321 or [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

Any marketer dreams for an

opportunity to showcase their

product to the widest possible

audience. Serengeti was

showcased on the international

stage with the successful hosting

of the 101st SA Open

Championship. Our marketing

team received investment enquires

from a range of sources, from

persons overseas to locals who

pass the site every day (many

commenting that they did not

realise what was inside the gate)…

When the project was announced

in 2006, it was dubbed by some

the “best kept secret” – I guess

the secret is out and if you have

not to date made the obvious

decision to invest in Serengeti,

don’t let 2011 end before doing

so. Our marketing team is on duty

to assist.

Whistling Thorn, our first

residential apartment development

in the estate, was released to our

registered database in

November. Before the on-set of

the SA Open Championship event,

60% of Phase 1 was sold out. We

are looking forward to the

commencement of marketing the

The Quarter, which is the mixed

use precinct with offices as the

first phase early 2012 and to share

exciting news with you regarding

the progress on the equestrian

offering on the estate.

We are thankful for the blessings

of 2011, making this a memorable

year for Serengeti!

May God bless you

and your family over

this festive period.

Wow, what a year ! A successful first hosting of the SA Open and SASAHOF events, increased memberships, increased rounds and a world class golf course maturing daily. We truly are blessed ! The year is coming to a close but thankfully we can do it all again in the new year. We have more exciting events and challenges to look forward to and a chance to showcase Serengeti to the world again when we host the 2012 SA Open Championship. New staff have joined the team and added skills and experience needed and I thank each and every staff member for their continued passion and commitment to delivering the Serengeti experience. Thank you to all the home owners, members and your guests who support the club and keep us on our toes. Have a blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year. May all your endeavors be shined upon and may all your bad swings miss hit shots go straight over the festive season, wishing you many birdies and eagles. Thank you again

SCHOOL NOTES

CURRO SERENGETI PRE-PRIMARY, PRIMARY & HIGH SCHOOL

The Curro Serengeti Pre Primary school children have enjoyed a busy final term with activities including a fantasy dress-up day and a spectacular concert, “Stary Stary Night”. This event was no doubt the highlight of their year with every child kitted out in a gorgeous costume. Each class had a turn to perform and sing songs to a large audience of approximately 300 family members and friends. Next year Grade One moves to the “big school” and both teachers and current Grade R and Grade One pupils are extremely excited about their new class rooms and school building with wonderful facilities including sports fields and tennis courts. Extramural activities will include athletics, netball, soccer, tennis, cross country, cricket , hockey, softball, chess, wildlife club and choir. Private activities will include dance, golf and pottery. The Curro Serengeti Primary and High School welcomes approximately 600 pupils in January 2012, adding a whole new ‘youthful’ dimension to the Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate. The majority of parents will utilise the back road access from the R23 to the school, which will be tarred no later than March 2012. A bus service has also been offered to children commuting from Kempton Park. For enquiries and enrolments, please contact Louise de Jager at [email protected]

Rector : Curro Serengeti Academy

Letter from the Rector

Dear Readers What an unbelievably exciting, yet hectic, end to an academic year. In a little over a month we’ve experienced the completion of the new on-site Curro Serengeti Preparatory and Secondary school; the establishment of bussing options for parents in the Kempton Park area; moving of Mandorren Academic and Sport to the new premises; appointment of new staff members to accommodate the vast interest shown by prospective learners and the finalisation of operational plans to ensure the full efficient functioning of the school from the first day of school on 18 January 2012. These plans include all systems and structures pertaining to the Pre-Primary, Foundation, Intersen and Secondary Phases of the school, which will include a 2012 matric class comprising 41 learners. Our foundations will encompass a Christian and values- based education approach. My vision for the school is to attain and maintain exceptional educational standards throughout our systems, while basing our approach on a structured and comprehensively controlled disciplinary system which will compliment the development of each individual learner in our system. We envisage a well-mannered, and thoroughly prepared young adult exiting our care to become productive and successful members of society, able to make informed decisions on their roles and functioning within the immense complexities of the South African workplace. Our educational development will focus on a healthy balance between academics, sport and cultural activities. A Curro Serengeti learner should be easily recognisable in a group of learners from various schools. He or she will be the one greeting visitors and/or parents and wearing his or her uniform with pride. I’d like to thank the Estate Management Team who has welcomed me and my family and made us feel very comfortable. Without this type of support, encouragement and assistance, it would be impossible to develop our plans to reality and I believe that our development and progress at the school also rests heavily on the establishment of a healthy relationship between the school and the estate community. I believe that this partnership will play a significant role in developing and establishing Curro Serengeti as one of the flagship schools for Curro nationwide. Exciting times lie ahead. Should any person living, working or associated with the Serengeti Estate wish to know more about the school, its vision or functioning please feel free to contact me at the school to set up an appointment or alternatively I can be reached at [email protected] The Curro Serengeti staff wishes you all a blessed, fulfilling and relaxing festive season. Yours in education

The end of a year is usually a good time to reflect on your achievements as an organization and community, and so we summarise the following accomplishments: • Growth in families from 78 in Dec 2010 to 140 in Dec 2011. • Transferring stands from 640 in Dec 2010 to 170 in Dec 2011. • We presented a budget within limits, an 8% increase, where the average increases of service fees has increased on average by 15%. • We successfully hosted the 101 SA Open Championship, with the Serengeti Community welcoming all visitors to our Estate, with no incidents. • Serengeti residents performing the functions of volunteers during the tournament. The SPOA’s main function is to protect the value of your home and the quality of your neighbourhood, and we are of the opinion that we are doing that. If deed restriction violations are not corrected, there can be very negative results over time. Estimates are that property values in a subdivision with an inactive association can fall as much as twenty percent due to failure to enforce restrictions. To illustrate, multiply an average home price of R2,000,000 by the number of lots in an average subdivision of 100 homes. This yields total property value of R200,000,000. This is the value of the assets that the association is trying to protect. If that property value is reduced by twenty percent, the homeowners in the neighborhood collectively lose R40,000,000. Even if home prices lose only ten percent in value due to a moderate failure to enforce deed restrictions, homeowners lose R20,000,000. The association, acting through its board of directors, can control the appearance of the neighborhood by taking deed restrictions seriously and by vigorously enforcing any significant infraction thereof. While we are in the development phase of the estate, a number of activities impact on our daily lives. The biggest impact for me, I experienced yesterday:“I visited a residence with the purpose of conducting a final inspection, to grant them occupation. While inspecting the building, the owner was tense with anticipation that they will pass the inspection. When I completed the inspection, I congratulated the owner and the builder with the final product, and informed them that they can take occupation of the residence. While getting into my vehicle I noticed in the rear-view mirror the owner hugging the builder and jumping with joy, and I realized that her dream had materialized.” There is not a day, that I need to drag myself to Serengeti. It is a vibrant community, were I enjoy my work. Allow me to thank, the following: • The dear Lord for giving us the strength • The Community of Serengeti to help building a community • The Board of Trustees for their guidance and support • All staff members, Rangers, Landscaping who gave their 150%, to make Serengeti an Estate of Excellence • To Nicolette Conradie and her team of residences, who unselfishly, collected packed hampers for all the staff. Last but not least I would like to thank my family, for allowing me the time away from them, their support – In living my dream to make a difference. I love you! May you all have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous new year!

True communities : living, breathing, vibrant communities are not born, they are built.

SUPPLIERS CORNER We have an exciting COMPETITION in this news letter. Tower Industries are sponsoring a wonderful prize. See below details.

We have some exciting news to share with you in this newsletter. Serengeti conservationists have discovered a den on the estate containing a female porcupine and three babies. We are monitoring their progress and they are all feeding well and in good health. Apparently one of the residents spotted a hedgehog in his garden recently This is the first recorded sighting of this animal at Serengeti . You may have seen Jackals in the early mornings or night time and it seems they have pups with them again this year. We have not see the young ones but can assume from their tracks in the mud, that they are around. Remember to keep your eyes open and let us know if you spot any interesting animal or bird on the estate. Contact Gordon at [email protected] or 082 709 0632
