1.2. Operation
The MicroLok II serial isolators are designed to protect data channels from undesirable transient signals or voltages that might otherwise corrupt transmitted or received data.
Several models of serial isolators are available. Refer to Table 1-1, Figure 1-1, Figure 1-2, and Figure 1-3.

1.2.1. RS-232/423-Compatible Serial Isolator
The RS-232/423 Serial Isolator Unit protects RS-232/RS-423 type communication lines between the MicroLok II CPU PCB or CSI PCB and the external code system from signal voltage transients. The unit operates from signal battery and provides isolation between the host system and the serial code line, RFL carrier, remote MicroLok II, or modem. Battery for the isolator unit must be the same battery used by the host system. The unit also provides isolated ±12V to power the modem, if required. The RS-232 unit accepts communications up to 9600 baud.
The RS-232/423 Serial Isolator is contained in an assembled high impact plastic, two-piece case designed for four-point mounting on a rack panel or other suitable surface. Data cabling is attached on two 25-pin “D” connectors. Unit operating power is connected on a two-terminal screw plug.
1.2.2. ATCS Radio-Compatible Serial Isolators
The ATCS radio-compatible Serial Isolator provides transient signal protection on Motorola MCP radio-based non-vital serial communications links with MicroLok II. Two versions of this isolator unit are available, including a unit for an RS-422 to EIA/TIA-232 (DCE) interface, and a second unit for EIA/TIA-485 to EIA/TIA-232 (DCE) interface. The interface is isolated from input to output at 2000VAC RMS. The RS-422/232 unit accepts communications up to 9600 baud. The RS-485/232 unit works with faster 19200 baud communications typically required for this interface. Isolator unit power is supplied over the MicroLok II CPU or CSI PCB link, depending on the application.
The ATCS Radio Serial Isolator is contained in a high impact plastic, two-piece case designed for four-point mounting on a rack panel or other suitable surface. Data cabling is attached by two 25-pin "D" connectors on the unit’s top cover.
1.2.3. Triple Isolation Serial Isolator
The Triple Isolation Serial Isolator protects RS-232 communication lines between the MicroLok II CPU (DTE equipment) and the external code system (DCE equipment/communication equipment/modem) from signal voltage transients and from the signal battery. The unit operates from signal battery and provides 1500 VAC RMS isolation between the host system and the serial code line, RFL carrier, remote MicroLok II, and Modem. Both the MicroLok II 25-pin D connector and the modem communication connector inputs and outputs are isolated from each other and to the signal battery by 1500 VAC RMS for one minute. The Triple Isolation Serial Isolator unit baud rates are 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, and 19200.
Data cabling is attached to two 25-pin "D" connectors. The Triple Isolation Serial Isolator unit is contained within a high-impact plastic case, two-piece case designed for four-point mounting on a rack panel or other suitable surface.

NOTE
Certain pins of the male and female DB-25 connectors on the isolator are tied together. A label (Figure 1-4) lists the tied-together pins is affixed to the side of the isolator. Be aware of these pins when making wiring connections.

1.3. Rack Mount Panel
A 19-inch rack-mounted micarta panel (M16404901) is available that can contain up to three ATCS Serial Isolator units (see Figure 1-5). No hardware is supplied. Use twelve ¾" long 10-32 pan head screws, stainless steel, and twelve 10-32 nuts, stainless steel, for the three isolator units.

1.4. Adapter PCB
A small Adapter PCB is available that mates with and reduces the 25-pin "D" pinouts on the front of the RS-422 to EIA/TIA-232 (DCE) isolator to 9-pin type connectors (refer to Figure 1-6). This Adapter PCB is also equipped with a 2-post wiring terminal to connect external 12V when required by the application. The Adapter PCB cannot be used with the ATCS Serial Isolator EIA/TIA-485 to EIA/TIA-232 (DCE) (N16404702).

NOTE
Exercise care to ensure that devices that are serially connected directly to a MicroLok II unit DO NOT have serial connections to devices that might ground serial common.
The serial commons for all MicroLok II serial ports are connected directly to negative vital battery AND to each other. This means that anything connected to any serial port common is also connected to negative vital battery. Furthermore, anything connected to the serial common of any equipment that is directly connected to any MicroLok II serial port is connected to negative vital battery through MicroLok II. This imposes serious restrictions on the characteristics of the devices that can be DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the MicroLok II serial ports. For example, most commercial data modems connect their serial common to earth ground, either directly or through a low resistance. Also, most data radios connect their serial common directly to their antenna ground. Both of these conditions create a problem since they introduce a connection between negative vital battery and earth ground.
Isolation between serial commons is necessary when serially connecting MicroLok II units that are powered by different batteries. As these battery power supplies are considered vital and are required to float with respect to earth ground, significant potential differences can develop between the battery negatives. These potential differences could conceivably be equalized by the connection between serial commons.
Serial Link Isolator Units
Copyright 2019 1D2.0004 Rev. 2, March 2019 1-8
This situation poses a threat both to communication circuit reliability and the electrical integrity of the connected MicroLok II units. In addition, interconnection of battery commons by any means is not a recommended practice.
This situation is remedied by introducing a serial line isolator in the serial line between the MicroLok II units. This unit provides a high level of isolation between the signal commons of MicroLok II and serial devices such as modems and data radios.
The RS-232 link from the MicroLok II CPU Com Port passes through an STS USA serial isolator before going to the modem. This ensures there will be no grounding problems between interconnected MicroLok II units.
Refer to Figure 1-7 for a typical wiring diagram for Serial Isolator N16401101.

All MicroLok II serial ports are identified as Data Line Terminating Equipment (DTE). This means that Transmit Data (TXD) and Request To Send (RTS) signals are outputs and Receive Data (RXD), Data Carrier Detect DCD), and Clear To Send (CTS) are inputs. The STS USA serial isolators are identified as Data Carrying Equipment (DCE) and Transmit Data (TXD) and Request To Send (RTS) are inputs and Receive Data (RXD) and Data Carrier Detect (DCD) are outputs.

1.9. System Applications
The MicroLok II system can be configured to manage communications with a remote non-vital code system. This code system would in turn handle interlocking communications with a central control office. For most code system applications, a Genisys II CPU printed circuit board is installed in the MicroLok II system cardfile, and a serial isolator unit is connected into the serial communication lines. Refer to Figure 1-17 through Figure 1-20 for typical wiring diagrams for Serial Isolator N16401101 used in different configurations.
