Don’t worry if you can’t make up your mind - there’s a lot coming at you. You may need blinders to stay on track. In the meantime, why not indulge a little diversion? I did. Please enjoy my various forms of amusement.
– Madeleine Wood, March 2005 –
Madeleine Wood was born and raised in BC with a lifelong passion for art. She stud-ied at Emily Carr Institute and Concordia University for her MFA. Her current works are close up and personal, based on photographic observations, her subjects shift-ing between flesh, cloth, flowers, leaves and fruit. See www.madeleinewood.com
Madeleie Wood’s exhibition Diversions is an Outreach Exhibition coordinated by the Richmond Art Gallery through the Art Access program. For all exhibition, sales or rental inquiries, please contact the Art Access Coordinator, Cecilia Denegri Jette, by phone, fax or email [email protected]

BEDeSCAPES
I hope to create a space of comfort and escape.
The bed is a world in itself, a platform for some of our biggest events, an oyster shell for human pearls. Most of us spend about a third of our lives in bed. Is this not significant?
Ultimately, I want my paintings to feel familiar and mysterious at the same time. I may work closely to my photographs, in a realist language, using familiar territory, but I allow the imagery to speak of other things.

Intersections
These works are a by-product of my grid patterns. Having painted 90 squares of intense subject matter (see Something About Love at the Richmond Art Gallery) I found relief in simple bold colour combinations at intersecting points, four squares at a time. I decided to leave imagery behind and explore colour quadrants. I could not abandon images for long. I ended up collecting photos of domestic spaces I’d been wanting to capture, in four glimpses.
I feel a pull towards abstraction and collage and can well imagine the pleasure of building quilts.

perky peppers
I can’t help myself. I see human sexuality in most things, and peppers are no excep-tion. I relate to these voluptuous creatures nestled together by colour; little popula-tions of mirth bursting with gaiety and pride, orgy-like. They remind me of puppy dogs in their readiness to delight, entertain and nourish. And of course, there’s more. I have used the peppers to tell recent love stories.
I feel a pull towards abstraction and collage and can well imagine the pleasure of building quilts.

leaving space
This collection follows a long stint with blossoms; the rose at the pinnacle. I now find solace in the open surfaces of leaves and foliage that sustain plant life. They have their own glory; their patterns etched into their very fibre.
Of course I celebrate their details. Leaves beg for this. They showcase nature’s imprint: branching designs diverging, repeating.
