    The HeidelbergCatechism (1563), Q&A #27,

    Q. What is the providence of God?

    A. God's providence is His almighty and ever

present power, whereby, as with His hand, Heupholds heaven and earth and all creatures,

and so governs them that leaf and blade, rain

and drought, fruitful and barren years, foodand drink, health and sickness, riches and

poverty, indeed, all things, come not by

chance but by His fatherly hand.

Of the evils that infect Gods world..., it can summarily be

said: God permits evil; he punishes evil with evil; hebrings good out of evil; he uses evil to test and disciplinethose he loves; and one day he will redeem his people

from the power and presence of evil altogether. The

doctrine of providence teaches Christians that they arenever in the grip of blind forces (fortune, chance, luck,

fate); all that happens to them is divinely planned, and

each event comes as a new summons to trust, obey, and

rejoice, knowing that all is for ones spiritual and eternalgood (Rom. 8:28).

We may be bewildered at the things

that happen to us, but God knows

exactly what he is doing... [So,] we

ought not to hesitate to trust his

wisdom, even when he leaves us in

    the dark.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustusthat all the world should be registered. This was the

first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town

of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is

called Bethlehem, because he was of the house andlineage of David, to be registered with Mary, hisbetrothed, who was with child. And while they were

there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gavebirth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in

swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because therewas no place for them in the inn.
