Located in northwestern AlleganyCounty, Rushford was Hrst settled in1808, but in 1926 the town was

saved from obscurity when its destinyturned from cheese production to watersports.Fe Hrst settlement was made by Enos

Gary of Vermont in 1808, according toBeer’s “History of a ”Allegany County.” Hewas quickly followed by Charles SwiI, AbelBelknap, Amos Rose and Joshua Wilsonsettlers from New England between 1809-10. It is not known how the name Rushford

was decided. It is suggested that it camefrom rushes that grew along the river orfrom a well-known lawyer whose surnamewas Rush. When Rushford was founded lumber-

ing employed most of the people. AIerthat, came the dairy farms and the cheeseindustry evolved from that. Rushford Spectator editor, Dr. James

Sullivan wrote that “Rushford was dividedinto two districts by the Caneadea Creek,the soil on the slopes is a gravelly loamwhich answers to cultivation with largecrops of potatoes, vegetables and grains.Dairying is, however, a large part of thebusiness of the town. Rushford was the Hrstin the State to specialize in the manufactureof pineapple cheeses, in which it was aleader for half a century.” In the 19th century History of New

York State its written, “An early Americanexample of commercially produced cheesefor general consumption was the Nortonfamilys "Pineapple cheese." It began inGoshen, Conn. Lewis M. Norton inventeda process for making a soI cheddar cheesewhich he pressed into a pineapple-shapedwooden mold and then dried by hanging inan openwork net that produced a distinc-tive diamond-shape pattern. Norton ob-tained a patent for it in 1810. Norton iscredited for establishing the Hrst cheese fac-tory in the United States in 1844. Fe fac-tory eventually moved from Connecticut toRushford, NY in Alleghany County.”

In the late 1800s the pineapple cheesefactory moved to Attica,J. Elmer, one of the foremost names in

Rushford history according to the Historyof Rushford was another who capitalized onthe cheese making. Mostly farmers madecurd, until Elmer traveled to Cheddar, Eng-land, and learned the secret of makingcheddar cheese. He brought the methodback and started making cheddar in Rush-ford. At one time Rushford was the Ched-dar Cheese Center of the world.Fe population reached its high point

in the mid-1800s. While in the late 1800s the pineapple

cheese factory moved to Attica, Rushfordwas to gain state-wide fame in another way.Before the construction of the CaneadeaDam the Town of Rushford was in dangerof fading into just another hill town. By theturn of the century economics were prettymuch at a low point based on informationin the History of Rushford, then, in theearly 1920s the Mohawk Power Company,which owned Rochester Gas and Electricsaw the need for more electrical power. Aplan was made to build a $2 million dam onCaneadea Creek which would save RG andE the expense of purchasing 100,000 tons ofcoal a year to generate electrical power. Feplan called for the water impounded by thedam to be released in the fall when thewater level of the Genesee River haddropped to a point below that which is re-quired to supply the power needed to oper-ate the company’s hydro power plantlocated in Rochester.Fe logical site for the $2 million dam

project was located in the Caneadea Creekgorge a recreation area, however the areaalso included the hamlets of East Rushfordand Kelloggville. Fe small communities housed a

melodium factory, several farms, feed mills,saw mills and gristmills. Fe CaneadeaPower Corporation, which was formed as asubsidiary to RG and E to build the dam,paid $1,200 for a small farm, and $12,000for a larger farm, $10,000 for a feed mill and

$15,000 for a sawmill. Fe people movedout of the two hamlets either to Rushfordor out of the area.Work on the dam started in Dec. 1926,

and at its peak, 500 were employed on theproject. Fe dam was completed by 1929and the lake was formed opening up lake-front property to Hshermen and others whoenjoy water sports. Today the lake commu-nity is Rushford’s claim to fame. Fe Allegany County Historical Society

notes that today, Hshermen using radar oc-casionally pick out the outline of the oldbuildings at the bottom of the lake.At the turn of the new century, Jay

Woelfel, a frequent visitor to the lake as achild, produced a movie called “GhostLake” which was Hlmed on Rushford Lakeusing town’s people as extras and featuringmembers of the volunteer Hre departmentand rescue squad. It was released in 2005and has had limited success. It is availableat local video stores.Rushford also boasts some famous sons.

Frank Wayland Higgins (1856 – 1907) ofRushford, was a member of the New YorkState Senate from 1894 to 1902, LieutenantGovernor of New York from 1903 to 1904and was elected in 1904 as the 35th Gover-nor of New York from 1905 to 1906. Fehouse in Rushford in which he was born, ispreserved and today is oIen part of histor-ical tours.Rushford graduate Franklin G. Babbitt

attended Houghton College before receiv-ing a congressional appointment to theNaval Academy in Annapolis. Md. He grad-uated in 1945, as part of an acceleratedClass of 1946 during World War II. Heserved aboard numerous submarines, in-cluding the Spinax, Volador, Chivo Balaoand Fornback. In 1961, he became an as-sistant naval attache in Moscow. From 1973to 1975, Capt.Babbitt managed 16 defenseand attache oGces in western and southernEurope. He retired from the Navy in 1975and passed away in 2007.

The Dansville Rotary Clubwishes to thank the Dansville Central School

District for allowing the club the use of the High School Gym for their annual Tip Off

Basketball Tournament. This event is one of the club’s largest fund raisers each year allowing the ongoing support of its’ many

community functions. Special thanks to Rob Van Scoter, Jim

McMahon, Terry Conway and Mark McGavisk for donating their personal time to support this function. Also to Molly and Kent Koch

and their staff for all their time manning the Booster Club’s refreshment stand for every

hour of the tournament. Finally, this Tournament would not be successful without

the help of many Rotarians working their appointed shifts over the 3 days.

Rotary Club is extremely thankful to all the supporting businesses who were advertisers and sponsors in the Tournament ad booklet. Thanks to The Genesee Valley Pennysaver for the great job on the ad books and the

shirts. They looked great. The 4 participating schools this year were Wayland-Cohocton, Perry Central, Greece

Odyssey and the host school, Dansville Central. All games were very well played with Perry defeating Dansville in the final. Thanks to all the players and cheerleaders for their
