ISAIAH 1:18

Not Enough Words!

We will try to spend some time this morning

thinking about the Biblical

concept of grace– but there

aren’t enough hours in the

day or words in the diction-

ary to do the subject justice!

Think about the songs we

sing (some this morning)

about grace– notice all the

superlatives used to de-

scribe it: Amazing Grace,

Marvelous Grace, Great Grace, Wonderful, Suffi-

cient, or abundant grace. The theologian Bonehoffer

famously wrote about ‘costly’ grace and ’cheap’

grace. How is it possible for so many descriptive

terms to be applied to this one word?

I think the answer is actually quite simple. To

look upon the grace of God is like trying to see all the

stars in the night sky– its vastness makes it impossi-

ble. Each new turn of the telescope reveals another

cluster of beauty– another constellation to marvel at.

People spend their whole lives staring at the night

sky and never finish their study– the same is true as

we seek the entire nature of God’s goodness shared

by his grace. One aspect of God’s grace seems iden-

tical to another, just like

each star in the sky

seems no different than

it’s brother. That is– until

you actually LOOK at

them and see their radi-

ant complexities burning

in brilliance. We marvel

at the manifold grace of

God today, and hopeful-

ly it will only create a

craving for more as we go, and we will Be blessed!

With Love, Adam

The Power of Late Night Thoughts

What we think at any time is important (Proverbs 23:7), but it seems to

me that our late night thoughts are fraught with particular significance

because they “set our course” for the next day. If a person drifts off to

sleep with prayerful thoughts about God, heaven, and serving the Lord,

it cannot help but impact him for good come morning. But on the oth-

er hand, if one fills her head at late night with evil thoughts, it can only

be productive of wicked pursuits in her daylight activities.

First, let us note the blessings of good late night thoughts: “Stand in

awe, and sin not; commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be

still. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the

Lord” (Psalm 4:4-5). Again, “My soul shall be satisfied...when I remem-

ber thee upon my bed and meditate upon thee in the night watch-

es” (Psalm 63:5-6). Yes, “The thoughts of the righteous are

right…” (Proverbs 12:5).

On the other hand, how spiritually destructive are the wrong kind of

late night thoughts. Observe this warning from a prophet of old, “Woe

to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! When the

morning is light, they practice it . . .” (Micah 2:1). The wicked man

“deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not

good…” (Psalm 36:4). No wonder the Bible tells us, “the thoughts of

the wicked are an abomination to the

Lord” (Proverbs 15:26).

The way we live our lives is determined

by what we think. Solomon states that

what one “thinketh in his heart, so is

he” (Proverbs 23:7). Thus, we cannot

over emphasize the importance of think-

ing good things, and especially at night

upon our beds. —Maxie Boren (House to House, Heart to Heart)

“...whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever

things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely,

whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there

be any praise, think on these things” —Philippians 4:8

No force in the universe

can match the devastating power of sin,

Save the limitless Grace of God.
