The Conductor’s Call: “The Misdiagnosis” As a pastor I spend my share of time in hospitals. Every time I am not there as a patient, it is a wakeup call. And when I am there as a patient it is a REAL WAKE UP CALL! Areas I usually consider? It goes something like this: “I need to remind my family that I am an organ donor and that I want to be cremated.” “I need to talk to my parents about their living wills.” “I need to tell Deb to never send me to _________ hospital.” “I hope I’m like ________ if I ever have to go through something like that.” “I hope I’m not like _________ if I ever have to go through something like that.” Well, it is always good to “wake up” before you are unable to “wake up”! There is a second experience that I have encountered that is always very intriguing to me. The Diagnosis. When the doctor says what is happening and what needs to happen. . . in his opinion. But before “The Diagnosis” there is usually “a diagnosis”, the self -diagnosis. Sometimes, only the self-diagnosis is given. The Epitaph reads, “I guess you were right, I should have gone to the doctor.” Hopefully the epitaph is never, “See! I told you I was sick!” But for some, getting a diagnosis from someone other than themselves is rare. Having a doctor you trust is difficult these days. Mainly because general practitioners are becoming more and more rare. Very often, it is a doctor you do not know, and perhaps three or four doctors, discussing three or four options. . . none of which sounds wonderful. The patient, usually a parishioner, is basically being asked to trust someone. . . with everything other than eternity. So when “The Diagnosis” comes, it shows a person’s character, and it shows a person’s faith. What happens between self-diagnosis and doctor diagnosis is different for everyone. But many choose to consult the “self-appointed experts” before actual doctors. For example, the addict knows he has a problem, and knows he needs help, but he may not be ready to trust the tough love person, or the person who has the proven track record, because “random man” OR “internet friend” has an idea that sounds better. From canker sores to cancer, there are “get what you pay for” counselors, and “other than doctor” experts. Some actually have a clue, but most simply want you to believe they have a clue. Their method of “diagnosis” usually starts with some form of “You’ll be smart if you follow my advice, and dumb if you ignore me.” The reality is, that sentence may or may not be true! I’ve seen people trust people they should not, and I’ve seen people fail to trust people they should trust. My advice tends to be, “Well, what if their diagnosis is right? What is the most likely outcome?” AND “What if they are wrong, what is the most likely outcome?” We tend to either trust self-diagnosis, trust the advice of the self-appointed expert, or trust the professional. Then, of course, there is the affordability of things, treatment based on what is or is not covered by insurance. Today, “doing the right thing” has been replaced by, “do the affordable thing”. The Diagnosis, then, is not really a diagnosis of the body, but a diagnosis of the bank account. This leads to the frustration that many have, the joking line then becomes, “Well, my ad-vice? Don’t get sick!” So, what is the answer? Where is the hope? Well, regarding the physical

VBS meeting--July 6th 6 pm

Virginia Martinez and Sandy Sills would like to hold a VBS worker meeting on Thursday, July 6th at 6 pm at the church. Dinner will be provided (pizza, salad and drinks). Please come to this meeting if it is at all possible to fit it into your schedule. It will be a great time to get acquainted with the theme, go over last minute details, ask questions, and get excited about reaching out to kids in our community for Christ.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY Saturday, July 22nd, we will be having our Christmas in July packing party for Operation Christmas Child. Bring items for boys and girls and we will work together to pack them in a shoebox and pray for the kids receiving those boxes. We need to get started now if we want to exceed the number of boxes we packed last year. Item suggestions: clothing items, a small toy, a stuffed animal or doll, travel games, books, colored pencils or other art supplies, school supplies, bar soaps, wash cloths, combs and toothbrushes. NO liquids, food items, war or military themed toys, or cash. Watch the bulletin for more information.

realm, there really isn’t a 100% reliable answer. Doctor’s call their work “a practice” for a reason, it is not an exact science. And self-diagnosis always works. . . until it doesn’t. Misdiagnosis is always a concern in the physical realm. But the spiritual realm has The Answer and The Perfect Hope! The Doctor never makes an improper diagnosis. Our Great Physician is 100% reliable. His diagnosis is the best possible thing for you, and the cure lasts for eternity. In fact, the only possible misdiagnosis, the only way to keep from benefitting from His eternal healing, is to trust yourself or someone else with your eternal care. His diagnosis is free, the cure is free, the only physical cost was paid by His Son, and the only personal responsibility you have is to trust Him 100%. Regarding proof of insurance? Everyone has this written on their heart: “Into Thy Hands I Commit My Spirit.” If you get physically, mentally, or emotionally sick, your treatment depends on your healthcare insurance and those who care for you. But even the best care, in the worldly realm, only postpones those problems. The irony of all earthly sickness? Death cures it. Spiritually, healing is eternal, but so is a lack of healing. Physical death has no effect on the spirit. However, our death does reveal who we trust with our spiritual care. The diagnosis is always true, is final, and is irreversible. SO, who do you trust with your eternity? There’s only one worth trusting. He makes house calls, and appointments can be made 24/7! See ya’ Sunday!
