On that Mountain, Jesus revealed before mortal eyes the Transcendent Truth of who He is - and who Peter, James and John - and each one of us - will become in Him. They were

invited to exercise their freedom and embrace the path that He had prepared.

Let’s look at the overall picture of what it means to be mentally healthy. Dr. William Glasser, MD, the late founder of Reality Therapy/Choice Theory, bemoaned the fact that a book ex-ists (DSM-5) that classifies mental illness but there is none that classifies the ways we can be mentally healthy. I think he has a point. So again, let’s take a look. First, it is important to know that Dr. Glasser, as a medical doctor and board certified psychiatrist, acknowledged that there can be chemical imbalances in the brain and, as a result, would need various medicines to allow the mind-body to remain balanced. But not all of what we call mental illness falls in that category. Remember the movie with Tom Hanks where he is marooned on an island due to a plane crash? He is there for at least three years, trying to figure out how to leave it in order to go back to society. Eventually, he does figure it out, of course. While there, his only friend is a sports ball (soccer perhaps) who he refers to as Wilson. He talks to Wilson. Why not? Nobody else is there. The ball is his only friend. Now he prepares to leave, courtesy of a well-constructed raft that took that long to figure out how to make, and he takes Wilson on board with him. But in the resulting sea journey, Wilson rolls off. It is after all a ball! But not to Tom Hanks. He cries and cries. He lost his friend. All the movie audiences understand. He had nobody to talk to and made the ball his friend. But let us see somebody on the street talk to themselve, and we’ll look at them and categorize them as “mentally ill.”

In Dr. Glasser’s view, the mind is creative, and much of mental illness (not all!) can really be defined as basic lone-liness and unhappiness. For Glasser, it is typical for much of the mentally ill to not have as much as one healthy relationship.

Christ would have us form ourselves into a community of believers. If forming such groups become successful, much of so-called mental illness would not exist, as we would all be there for each other. That is why the various 12 Step groups are so successful, like AA. Great relationships are formed, both with each other and with God. Why is difficult to reach that sort of successful Church community formation? Thomas Merton is relevant for an answer to this type of question. The famous Trappist monk and writer, in his own attempt to unpack the mean-ing of Original Sin, quite simply states that we are all born selfish. And overcoming selfishness could become a lifelong task, and maybe we would fail at it. Well, that would be true if we have to rely on ourselves. But we don’t. We can rely on Christ and His teachings. We can develop the relationship with Him that He invites us to have, and in this way become unselfish. Again, look at the strength of any 12 Step Group.

Catholics and Christians in general over the centuries realized out of their relationship with Christ that the princi-ple way we trip all over ourselves is by living in the world with an unchecked ego. Or an unbridled ego. Same thing. If unchecked, all that matters to me is me, so to speak. At this point I am egotistical – or selfish. And to the extent that I don’t deal with it through the teachings of Christ, who would always encourage us to practice humili-ty, I can easily alienate people. Do that enough, and loneliness can set in, and at some point, someone will point to us and view us as mentally ill. We can agree or disagree with Dr. Glasser’s viewpoint. But whatever our own viewpoint on this matter, hopefully, in this season of Lent we can all agree that we can indeed trip all over our-selves with an egotistical way of living in the world, but we can live a better, healthier life with a humbler perspective - cooperating with others and living out a true Christian vision. Peace, Fr. Walter, Pastor

BEST LENT EVER I highly recommend Dynamic Catholic’s Best Lent Ever program. All that you need to do is go to the Dy-namic Catholic website and then sign up to receive Lenten spiritual updates/videos. Lent serves as a time that we prepare ourselves for the Resurrection of the Lord and these spiritual video clips will help you get prepared. Check it out and you will not regret it. GALA AND AUCTION I want to thank all of the parishioners that came to the gala and auction last week. We had an incredible evening and made lots of money for our school (unof icially, it looks like this will be the largest pro itable gala and auction in recent history). Thanks to all of the parishioners that donated items to the auction. We had a lot of fun and raised a lot of money for our school and ultimately for our children. REGISTRATION We have open registration for our school at this time for Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. If you are a new family to our school and have questions and/or would like a tour of our school, please call the school of ice (630-325-9220). We have a wonderful school and we love to show you around and tell you about the awesome things that take place here. Our school offers an atmosphere where our students are able to grow academically, physically, emotion-ally, and most importantly, spiritually. We challenge our students to do things that they didn’t think that they could do. We expect excellence because you do! STUDENT TRANSFER GRANT Our school offers a $1,000 grant the irst year to any child (1st-7th grade) that transfers into our school. The child will receive a $500 grant in his/her second year. Besides the grade level restriction, the only other restriction is that the child is not transferring from a school in the Chicago Archdiocese or the Rock-ford or Joliet Diocese. Please contact the school of ice if you have any questions about this grant. TUITION ASSISTANCE As we begin the registration process for the coming school year, I want to let current and future school families know that there are a couple of ways you can receive tuition assistance. The Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) gives thousands of dollars of tuition assistance to students in schools all across the Dio-cese of Joliet. This past school year, our school had the most students receive tuition assistance that we ever had. We had 13 children that received tuition assistance for a total of $9,100 this school year. If there is a need by a family, CEF wants to help each child go to a Catholic school. Not only do our students receive tuition assistance from CEF, but they also receive help from our parish as well. This school year, our parish has assisted families with $19,218 through matching tuition grants and other help. To apply for the CEF tuition assistance go to https://online/factsmgt.com/aid. The deadline is March 1st, but I have been told that applications will be accepted through March 15th.

Lenten Fast and Abstinence Regulations

Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, su -cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juice, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be serious-ly a ected, the law does not oblige.

To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.

Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations,) serious pray-er, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. the ignorant

A Prayer for an End to Abortion Heavenly Father, spare our nation from the scourge of abortion. Protect the lives of children in the womb. Give hope and strength to their mothers. Stir love in the hearts of fathers to support and cherish mother and child. Cause our elected leaders and the courts to recog-nize and protect the personhood of unborn children. Lift up church leaders to proclaim a Culture of Life. Lead par-ents who have had abortions to repentance and healing. Bring about the conversion of the abortionist, of those who deny the birthright of children and of those who are indifferent. Grant me the courage and energy to be a Defender of Life. I ask this through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
