Services, equipment and systems for

Topsides & Floating Units

Norwegian based companies in the oil and gas sector have a well established reputation and a significant market share as providers of services, equipment and systems to topsides and substructures for fixed and floating production platforms and drilling rigs. In this catalogue we present the cluster of INTSOK part-ners that provide products and services towards topsides in general, as well as for the various types of floating support structures. This catalogue is relevant for: • Oil companies • Engineering and EPC Contractors• Major shipyards• Rig/ship owners

TOPSIDESGenerally topsides comprises of production systems, supporting systems and accommodation for personnel. Its content is derived from the services it delivers in exploit-ing an oil and/or gas field. E.g. separate oil, gas and water, deliver power and other utilities or house personnel.

Its support structure; i.e. Jacket, GBS, SEMI, TLP, SPARs or a floating (monohull) vessels, is designed to support the topsides in the marine environment and in some cases provide storage of the produced liquids. In the early years of offshore developments, jackets were nor-mally used to support the topsides – and in Norway the GBS (Gravity Based concrete Structure) was invented and extensively used. However for water depths exceed-ing 150-200 meters, floating solutions are superior to fixed installations.

FLOATING SUPPORT STRUCTURESFloating support structures have been deployed in a number of specific offshore services to find, develop and produce oil & gas, examples are mobile drilling rigs, service vessels and oil production platforms. While the FPSO has been the preferred floating production solution in most of the world, other solutions have been applied in the US GoM, particularly SEMIs , Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs) and SPAR.

THE SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE. • The SEMI is a specialized vessel with good stability

and sea keeping characteristics. It is commonly used in a number of specific offshore roles such as for off-shore drilling rigs, oil production platforms and heavy lift cranes. It can be dynamically positioned or spread moored. The semi-submersible obtains its buoyancy from pontoons located below sea level. Structural columns connect the pontoons and operating deck, which can be located high above the sea level and waves due to the good stability of the concept.

THE TENSION-LEG PLATFORM. • The TLP is a vertically moored floating structure

used for oil & gas production in water depths

normally greater than 300 meters. The platform is permanently moored by means of groups of tethers (i.e. tension legs) at each of the structure’s corners. The tension leg design eliminates vertical motion of the platform, allowing the platform to have dry X-mas trees on deck, connected directly to the subsea wells by rigid risers. This allows a simpler well completion and easier access for well intervention.

• The “SPAR” platform is a deep-draft floating caisson, which is a hollow cylindrical structure similar to a very large buoy. The spar relies on a traditional spread mooring system, to maintain its position. The SPAR design is now being used for drilling and production. The distinguishing feature of a spar is its deep-draft hull, which produces very favorable motion charac-teristics compared to other floating concepts. Low motions and a protected centre-well also provide an excellent configuration for deepwater operations.

THE FLOATING PRODUCTION, STORAGE AND OFFLOADING UNIT. The FPSO is the dominant type of FPU and constituted around 70% of the FPU market in 2010. The FPSO is a floating vessel designed to receive hydrocarbons pro-duced from nearby platforms or subsea templates, sepa-rate the oil and gas and water, and store the oil until it can be offloaded onto a tanker. The FPSOs are particularly effective in remote or deepwater locations where subsea pipelines are not cost effective. In harsh environments the risers are connected to the vessel, through a turret, which allows the vessel to weather-wane. Alternatively, in benign environments like West Africa the FPSO can be spread moored and risers connected to the vessel at the side. FPSOs have historically been constructed by con-verting tanker vessels for oil production purposes, but in recent years there has been a shift towards purpose built FPSOs designed for given field parameters.

FPSO’S FOR LIQUEFACTION OF NATURAL GAS. These are called FLNG and there are currently several FLNG projects in execution. To mention a few: Malaysia has the PETRONAS’ Kanowit FLNG project and Australia has Shell’s Prelude FLNG project. Shell has entered into a frame agreement with the Technip/Samsung consortium to develop up to 10 FLNG units over a 15 year period and now several FLNG units are planned for the Browse field.

The selection of the floating support structure depends on the following criteria:• Dry or wet trees• Storage requirement• Available pipeline infrastructure• Operator familiarity• Field life • Cost• Area/field development plan (hub, tie-backs etc)

Our products and services are structured into nine different business areas, which together can offer all technologies and services needed for the life of a field.

FRONT END SPECTRUMAker Solutions’ spectrum of in-house capability is unique in the oil and gas industry. It comprises our extensive experience, throughout the entire life cycle of a field, from the geological evaluation of prospects through project development, operations, modifica-tions and maintenance to decommissioning. Now we are utilising this by setting up a global organisation covering the entire spectrum of competencies needed in early phase work. Front End Spectrum – Feasibility and concept engineering by Aker Solutions.Front End Spectrum removes the traditional discipline barriers and executes projects in integrated teams producing early phase studies with a holistic scope. All with one overall goal: to increase the value of the field.

Front End Spectrum is a response to market demand. As the oil and gas industry is moving towards ever more complex, challenging and marginal fields, the need for a holistic approach in early phase work is increasing. TOPSIDES ENGINEERINGAker Solutions has been designing, engineering, fabri-cating, completing and delivering platforms for more than 40 years. We have been one of the major contribu-tors to the offshore technology development. During this period we have designed and delivered close to 40 production platforms, whereof 6 with topsides weight of more than 30 000 tons.

We have executed major projects world-wide, and have developed oil and gas installations ranging from large complex installations in the deep, hostile North Sea and arctic climate, to facilities for small and marginal fields in shallow waters. Our multi-discipline organisation covers all the technical and administrative functions needed to execute engineering tasks for complex topsides.

For detail engineering, Aker Solutions works out of Oslo, London, Mumbai and Kuala Lumpur to secure cost-effective project execution for our customers.

FLOATERSAker Solutions designed and delivered the first floating drilling rigs in the late 1960’s. Today we offer a full range of floaters, covering semisubmersible drilling- and pro-duction rigs, Tension leg platforms, Spars and FPSO’s.

Semisubmersible drilling rigsAker Solutions has been responsible for the design and construction of a large number of the semi-submersible drilling rigs delivered for worldwide operations. A total of 39 units of Aker H-3, H-4 and H-6 design have been built. 20 delivered from own yards, the remaining built by other yards on license. Recently, the success of the Aker H-3/H-4 has been followed up with the Aker H-6e, likely the world’s most advanced semisubmersible drilling rigs. They are specially designed to meet high environmental standards and can operate in ultra-deep waters, harsh environments, and extreme temperatures and at long distances from supply infrastructure. The latest concept is the H-6x, tailored for harsh environ-ment and mid-water operations (1500 meters water depth). The hull is identical to the well proven H-6e design. Operational experience from the two H-6e units Transocean Spitsbergen and Transocean Barents and new industry demands are embedded in the design. The H-6x features large deck areas, storage and pay load capacities, and is prepared for full winterisation.

Tension leg platformsAker Solutions has a long experience on Tension leg platforms (TLP) design and has developed several new TLP concepts for a series of water depths, produc-tion capacities and environmental conditions, and is dedicated to make TLP an attractive solution for even deeper waters. The group also has got long experience in scaled model tests of TLP for all phases and components for a TLP, from installation tests to in-place tests for hull and tethers. In the last few years, Aker Solutions has assisted operating companies in TLP evaluations for West of Shetland, Australia, Malaysia as well as Norway.

SparA Spar is a type of floating oil platform used in ultra-deep waters. The concept consists of a large vertical cylinder supporting a two-side deck. After being responsible for the delivery of the world’s first Spar platforms for Neptune, Genesis and Hoover/Diana developments in Gulf of Mexico, Aker Solutions is back in the Spar-market. And of course with further develop-ment of the concept. We have been designing a Spar hull alternative for the world’s largest Spar for the Aasta Hansteen-field for Statoil. This is the world’s first Spar with in-hull

condensate storage and direct off-loading capabilities for condensate to shuttle tankers. The concept is qualified for the harsh environment off the coast of the northern part of the North Sea. With this as a reference, the design has been adapted to Gulf of Mexico function-ality and environment.

FPSOWith a comprehensive product portfolio ranging from our well known Tentech™ FPSO design to generic designs; Aker Solutions is a frontrunner in the develop-ment of purpose-built floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facilities for oil and gas. Aker Solutions has designed eight of the FPSOs currently operating in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea, representing more than 50% of all purpose-built ship shaped FPSOs.We design vessels that have proven its capability of producing oil under harsh, semi-arctic conditions. As exploration and development of new field’s move towards deeper and more remote waters, Aker Solutions’ FPSOs is a relevant option for a significant number of new projects globally, the latest has been the FEED for Ichthys, off Australia.

Roxar Flow Measurement (RFM), a division of Emerson Process Management, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of metering and monitoring instrumentation, providing operators with accurate knowledge on how their reservoirs and wells are performing, and increased production control and integrity. RFM is the industrial inventor of multiphase and wet gas meters.

RFM solutions include: • Permanent Downhole Instrumentation, providing

continuous reservoir surveillance to ensure that every producing well is managed for maximum performance. Recent developments include the Roxar downhole Flow sensor system which can, for the first time, generate multiphase measurements from either single bore or multilateral well configurations; and the Roxar downhole Wireless PT sensor system which can measure previously inaccessible pressure and temperature information behind the casing in subsea wells.

• Topside and Subsea Monitoring and Measurement Solutions, including its industry leading Roxar multi-phase and wet gas meters, which provide continuous information on flow rates, water measurement and how wells are performing, with the result being higher recovery factors. The third generation multiphase meter is able to characterise flow dynamics with even greater accuracy.

• An extensive flow assurance portfolio which includes measurement input, hydrate injection control, and corrosion and sand erosion monitoring to protect pipeline integrity and guarantee the continuous flow of oil & gas from reservoir to refinery.

• And RFM’s data acquisition solutions including advanced data monitoring, visualization and analysis tools which ensure that all information generated is

turned into genuine business value and is a key input into operational decisions.

From measuring flow rates to temperature, pressure, sand erosion, corrosion, and chemical injection, RFM puts operators firmly in control of the production process, increasing oil & gas recovery and maximizing reservoir performance.

Sevan Marine ASA is listed on Oslo Børs (ticker SEVAN) and has developed a cylinder shaped floater, suitable for all offshore environments. The Company’s primary focus is to create value for its shareholders by deliver-ing products and solutions to the offshore industry, utilizing its core competencies within the areas of design, engineering and project execution. The basis for the products and solutions is the Sevan technology. So far, the Company has concentrated its efforts in uti-lizing the Sevan technology for floating production and drilling applications. However, due to its versatility, the Sevan design may also be used for other applications, including Gas to Wire (GTW), FDPSO (Floating Drilling & Production), floating LNG (FLNG) and accommodation. Going forward, the Company will evaluate the potential

for such complementary uses of the Sevan technology. The business model has traditionally been based on a build-own-operate scheme, whereby the Company takes the responsibility for the construction, ownership and operation of the Sevan units. After a restructuring process in 2011, main focus will be on license agree-ments and EPC projects as a project developer.

Thermtech is the Norwegian company owner and supplier of the TCC® technology. The TCC® is the patented thermal desorption technology designed for the treatment of oily waste. The TCC® separates the oily waste into its components. The total recovery of the Base Oilsecures the reduction to zero of the TOC in the solids.

Thermtech is the technology owner of the patented TCC® process used to treat the oily waste produced during drilling, production and refinery activities. The TCC® converts kinetic energy to thermal energy by creating friction in the waste. The most important property of the TCC® process is its ability to recover every component of the waste, with the same qualities

of the original components. At the end of the treatment, the oil can be re-used and the clean solids can be used in different applications, land filled or discharged to sea. With all the elements recovered to be re-used with their chemical and physical characteristics unchanged, the TCC® process has completely eliminated the concept of waste.

PRODUCTSThe TCC can be delivered in a variety of configurations and treatment capacities. In addition specific customer requirements may be included in the actual configuration. Capacities range from 1 to 6 metric tons, the TCC can be electrically or diesel driven. The unit can be designed for an indoor installation or as a mobile unit.
