The Year of the LogisticianBy Master-Corporal Annie-Claude Venne Human Resources Administrator CJOC HQ

2018 marks the 50th An-niversary of the Canadian Forces Logistics Branch. A series of activities and events will take place throughout the coming months to high-light the contribution by Logisticians to the success

of Canadian military opera-tions at home and around the world. With a festive spirit, Lieutenant-General Charles Lamarre, senior Lo-gistician in the Canadian Armed Forces addressed a crowd of Logisticians in a ceremony to launch the “Year of the Logistician” on 26 January in Ottawa.

“This year we will cel-

ebrate the continuing sup-port that we are bringing to 20 operations around the world,” said LGen Charles Lamarre. “Fourteen thou-sand men and women from the Regular and Reserve Force make up the Logistics Branch. It is a massive oc-cupation that that enables the success of the Canadian Armed Forces on every op-eration that we undertake … whether it’s fighting floods like we had recently

in the Gatineau area or any other event when Canadians need our help on top of our standing commitments with NATO and NORAD.

“We are also a great ex-ample of diversity,” said LGen Lamarre. “Thirty-three percent of the Branch is made up of women that bring their own excellence to what we do. We’ve got visi-ble minorities around the six to seven percent range and about three percent of us are Indigenous members who are serving their country.

That is a great turnout…for diversity and inclusion for a branch that really represents the Canadian population.”

Although the Logistics Branch is celebrat-ing its 50th Anniversary, LGen Lamarre ex-plained that the history of logistical support to the Canadian Armed Forces really began in 1901 with the establishment of four com-panies that became the foundation the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps.

After the First World War, the various Corps’ were granted the ‘Royal’ designation for the excellence of the work done supporting the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1968, with the unification of Canada’s military, the ‘Royal’ designation was dropped and the Ca-nadian Forces Logistics Branch was created.

The contribution of Logisticians is, since

the very beginning, critical to the success of any CAF mission.

Throughout 2018, Logisticians will cele-brate in their work place and with a series of public events. A dominant activity is the Lo-gistics Branch 50th Anniversary Flag Relay. The relay began in July 2017 and since then, the Flag has been greeted by Logisticians in 11 countries and has travelled more than 44,000 kilometres; greater than once around the world at the Equator. The Flag will now make its way across Canada.

The event calendar also includes a skills-at-arms competition, mess dinners and on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on October 19, the Logistics Branch will receive the ‘Royal’ des-ignation from Her Majesty as the Branch be-comes the Royal Canadian Logistics Service.

Submitted by Environment Services

Beginning on March 6, 4th Canadian Division Sup-port Group Environment Services (4 CDSG Env Svcs) will conduct its annual two day Unit Environment Of-ficer (UEnvO) course to the personnel that are slated to take on that role at their re-spective Units.

The UEnvO is a small, but important role within a Unit. They are the main link between their Unit’s Chain of Command and the 4 CDSG Env Svcs team.

Some of the main re-sponsibilities of the UEnvO include: • Advising the Unit CO and unit members on environ-mental issues;• Disseminating any new

environmental policies and procedures;• Coordinating any environ-mental reports or returns; • Assessing the Units proj-ects and activities to de-termine if any mitigation measures are required and ensuring they are imple-mented; and• Planning for Unit environ-mental protection needs.

Throughout this course, both military and Depart-ment of National Defence (DND) personnel will learn about the various Federal and Provincial environmen-tal laws and regulations and how these apply to the activ-ities and exercises they con-duct, both on and off DND property.

WE ARE SAFETY SERVICES

Your Commanding Officer (CO) is responsible for your safety and well-being while at work at Garrison Pet-awawa. He/she has appointed a Unit General Safety Of-ficer (UGSO) and a Safety Committee to assist in identify-ing and reducing risk in the workplace in order to prevent injuries from accidents.

Every workplace should have a Safety Board posted where you can find out who your UGSO is and who rep-resents you on the Safety Committee.

There should also be a copy of the Canada Labour Code, a Safety policy statement by your CO, and minutes of previous Committee meetings.

Commander 4 Cdn Div has stated in his Safety Policy Statement that he “holds the leadership of the Division accountable for the well being of their personnel but it is also the individual’s responsibility and duty to identify and mitigate unsafe conditions, workplaces or attitudes.”

If you don’t know where your Unit Safety board is or who your Safety Rep is it is your duty and responsibility to find out.

Do you know who your Unit Safety Officer is?

Unit Environment Officers Course ... continued from previous pageThey will be taught

how to effectively draft an Environmental Effects De-termination for Unit level exercises and what types of mitigation measures could

be employed based on a va-riety of activities. We will discuss why it is important to incorporate environmen-tal aspects in the planning stages of all exercises. For

example, permits from fed-eral or provincial authori-ties can take many weeks to obtain, proper planning can alleviate last minute pres-sures and the risk of not obtaining required permits in time.

Participants will also learn about the Army En-vironment Program, and how it is designed to fa-cilitate military training by ensuring the overall sustainability of our train-ing areas. The concepts of

pollution prevention and sustainability will be dis-cussed and how these can be incorporated into ev-eryday Unit activities and exercises.

The UEnvO course is a CAF and DND wide certi-fied course and skills learned here in Petawawa can be transferred with an individ-ual wherever they go. Please contact Nicole McGregor via email at [email protected] to be loaded onto the course.

“Kids Want to Play” program to launch this springGolf Foundation, a new pro-gram entitled “Kids Want to Play” will be created in the Spring. This program will al-low eligible youth to play for free on the greens as well as receive instruction from Paul Cotey, Head Professional at the Club.

This junior program will not only see these kids get out on the greens, but it will also teach them the etiquette of the game and give them the chance to win one of two $500 bursaries.

“We are really excited to try and get kids enthused about the game of golf,” said Cotey.

Parents of the programs’ participants are also invited to play with their children on Sunday nights.

“It’s at no charge to them, so they can have some family time,” said Cotey.

All that is needed on the part of the child is to send Cotey a letter or an email detailing why they want to play golf as well as become a member of the Dave Findlay Junior Golf Foundation and the Petawawa Golf Club.

There are no official stan-dards for the letter, and it could be ten words or 10,000 words. The only stipulation is that it must be sent in by April 1. Those selected will be invited to an orientation and receive more details.

Barring a few blackout times and dates, participants will be able to play seven days a week if they choose to do so.

By Patricia LeboeufPetawawa Post

“We’ve got to get the kids to lay down their tech-nique and learn the game,” said Cotey. “That’s why we are doing this.”

This is the first year that the Club is hosting this pro-gram and it is open to chil-dren of military members as well as children from the community at large.

“We are trying to pro-mote the game for every-body, but let’s start with the kids,” said Cotey.

For more information or to send in a request letter, please contact Paul Cotey at [email protected]. The mailing address is Petawawa Golf Club, 3 Fes-tubert Blvd., Petawawa, On-tario, K8H 2X3.

The Petawawa Golf Club has a unique opportunity for youngsters interested in the sport.

Through a partnership with the Dave Findlay Junior

Petawawa Golf Club will offer free memberships to youth interested in learning golf fundamentals.

Snow Forts

As snow banks emerge throughout the town, Public Works crews remind parents to warn children that snow forts and tunnels are extremely dangerous. Playing in snow forts and tunnels poses a very serious risk of snow collapsing and of trapping a child. There is also great danger to children playing in areas where snow removal and clearing takes place.

Waste & Recycling Pick-up

Snow banks also present problems for refuse and recycling collection crews.PLEASE PLACE GARBAGE CONTAINERS, RECYCLING AND GREEN BINS FIVE (5) FEET BACK FROM THE CURB OR PAVEMENT EDGE IN THE DRIVEWAY TO PERMIT PROPER SNOW REMOVAL AND AVOID DAMAGE TO COLLECTION CONTAINERS.

The Town of Petawawa thanks the public for its co-operation and assistance in keeping children and workers safe during the winter season.

NEWS FROM THE GREATER PETAWAWA CIVITAN CLUB

By Marie FE Arnold, PROFor all the newcomers to Petawawa and the area, we

invite you to come to our Bingo that is held every Sunday night at the Civic Centre in Petawawa. Bingo starts at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., early bird games start at 6:30 and regular games start at 7 p.m.

Oh by the way our 52 special is getting up there again, it was up to $1,800 at our Bingo Sunday, Feb. 25 and will be $1,900 on Mar. 4. If it still does not go it, will be $2,000 on Mar. 11 and at that time, the bingo caller will say the 52 special will go tonight in 75 numbers. Remember when you support the Greater Petawawa Civitan Club’s Bingo, you are helping us support those in our area who need help.

Some of our Civitan members will be selling raffle tick-ets on three paintings. They are painted by local artists. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5. The proceeds from the raffle will go towards helping make the Civitan playground more accessible so everyone can enjoy time at the play-ground. Three tickets will be picked and each winner will receive one of the three paintings. The draw will take place on Apr. 1 at the Petawawa Civic Centre during the Sunday night Civitan bingo. Our sellers will have a poster so you can see what the paintings look like. If you would like more information about this draw, you may call Civitan Marie Arnold at 613-687-8463 or see her at the Petawawa Civitan Bingo Sunday night.

We are happy to say two new members have joined our great club. They are Civitan Jo Austin and Civitan Tracy Mc-Cumber. Oh by the way, I am hoping to get about 10 more. Now if you live in Chalk River or Deep River and would like to join The Greater Petawawa Civitan Club, we would welcome you. If you would like to have a Civitan Club in your own area, I would be happy to help you form your own. If you would like more information about Civitan and what we do, myself and our president and other members would be happy give you all the information you need.

I hope to see you all at our next Sunday night Bingo. Bring a friend with you and enjoy a night of Bingo and fun.

That’s all for now - God Bless and Be Happy.Thought for the week: Yesterday is the past. Today is the

present, do your best today for tomorrow may never come.

Must-have guide for selling your home(NC) When you put your home on the mar-

ket, you want to be offered top dollar and enjoy a smooth seamless sale from start to finish. For the best experience, use this guide full of expert tips from the Ontario Real Estate Association.

Start with an expert. Realtors are experts in your local housing market; they know the current market conditions, local data and details about other houses in your neigh-borhood. A Realtor will help you price your home competitively and, if you plan to reno-vate, they can advise whether the expected return on investment is worth your time, money and effort.

Prepare your home. Create an environ-ment that allows potential buyers to imagine themselves living happily and comfortably in your home. This means removing person-al mementoes and photographs, presenting a clean and organized space, and keeping the décor neutral. If you’re selling during the winter, snow can hide backyard imper-fections and the cooler weather is a great op-portunity to showcase how cozy your home can be — light the fireplace, stockpile fuzzy blankets and use lightly scented candles.

Close wisely. Work with your Realtor to make sure the buyer’s paperwork is in order

and any clauses are reasonable. Choose a closing date that’s convenient for you — for example, consider a closing date during the spring when the weather is nicer or on a long weekend so you have more time to move.

Across the country, people are packing boxes, hiring trucks and moving short and long distances. According to a survey by Du-Proprio, a Quebec-based real estate advice site, 28 percent of Canadians feel the need to move every five years. Surprisingly, Du-Proprio also found that 14 percent of owners wish they could move every year.

The main reasons people move are expan-sion of the family, a career change, retirement, empty nest situations, or when moving is more practical than large-scale home renovations. While some people stick close to previous home locations, a 2015 American Community Survey found approximately 16.9 million peo-ple moved to a different county in 2015.

Whether a move is across county lines or overseas, it can take some time to acclimate to a new neighborhood. These tips can help anyone get acquainted with their new sur-roundings and make friends in the process.

1. Host a housewarming party. Get to know immediate neighbors by hosting a party. After some unpacking is done, host a simple get-together for people who live

nearby. Ask if neighbors can help out by bringing chairs. Offer light refreshments and some type of activities for children. The event doesn’t have to be extensive, just long enough to engage in some conversation and introduce yourself.

2. Walk and drive around. Scout out the area by driving around and making note of shopping centers, parks and places of inter-est. Schedule times when you will get out of the car and walk around on foot, which makes it easier to take everything in. Use a website like Walkscore.com to find places within walking distance of your new home. Bring the dog along. Dogs can be great ice breakers with new neighbors.

3. Check out community blotters. Commu-nity events may be posted in print and distrib-uted through a local newspaper and also on municipal websites. Find out where the locals go on weekends or during the week. Commu-nities may take pride in certain activities. It’s easier to get a feel for the neighborhood by spending time with the locals.

4. Become active in the community. Find a volunteer organization or join a local

house of worship. Check with the local chamber of commerce for ways to get in-

volved or clubs to join. Like-minded people can make living in a new locale more enjoyable.

5. Dine out once a week. If budget allows, try a new neighborhood eating establishment each

week to get a lay of the land. You’ll identify hot spots and hidden gems and will also be able to mingle with the commu-nity. An app such as Open Table can help you find places to eat nearby. ononononononononononononononononononHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMESHOMES

Transform your tiny home with these tips

(NC) Many homeowners want to freshen up their homes with a series of renovations, but must get creative with their use of small spaces. It’s a common dilemma, especially with the uptick in condo living in recent years.

Here are some tips for your tiny home reno:Maximize your organization. When planning a small

home renovation, using your space efficiently should be top of mind. Whether you are making space to store shoes in a non-existent foyer or reorganizing the kitchen to create a bet-ter flow, the best fixes are often multipurpose. For example, use a shelf to store your shoes to save floor space, and con-sider attaching hooks to hang coats, purses and other acces-sories. In the kitchen, try hanging a grid from the ceiling to hang pots and pans, to save on drawer and cabinet storage.

Invest in appropriate appliances. If you are trying to re-vamp a 600 square-foot studio apartment, you may want to stay away from that six-top, extra wide gas stove. Most major appliance makers have developed lines that are just the right size for compact living spaces.

Cut down on new infrastructure. One of the most frustrat-ing challenges for those renovating small spaces is installing new plumbing. Even if you’re just converting a closet into a powder room, roughing in new piping can be expensive and take up valuable space. When planning out your new bath-room, consider using a Sanicompact, a self-contained, above-floor plumbing system that pumps waste up and away to an existing soil stack, eliminating the need for a rough-in or ex-pensive construction to break the floor.

With a little bit of forethought, your small home renova-tion can be a fun creative challenge.
