Key Site 30, also known as Bradley Village, has been making its way through the development process for several years now. In 2009, the 79-acre project site, located between Woodmere, Amethyst, and Cherry Ave. off of Bradley Rd. was approved for rezoning which would allow 20 units per acre to be built on a 9.3-acre portion. Following this 4-1 decision by the Board of Supervisors, Bradley Village general manager Lawnae Hunter filed an application for senior housing.

"People assume twenty units per acre means we’ll be building dense apartment buildings,” Hunter told OP in 2010, “My choice was for senior housing. It has never been the intention

to build low income or affordable housing.”

In July of that year a public scoping meeting was held regarding the project

and in September of 2012 a Draft EIR (Environmental Impact Report) hearing was also held.

The website for Bradley Village describes building a rural village with front porches and tree-lined walks that “honors the historical heritage of Orcutt.”

This year the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission met regarding the project and in May recommended its approval to the Board of Supervisors.

According to Senior Planner John Karamitsos, various

issues concerning Key Site 30 have been addressed including the Airport Approach Zone and No-Build Corridor which

covers portions of the site, compatibility with the surrounding neighborhoods, and the inclusion of parks, trails, and open space.

The goal of Key Site 30 becoming Bradley Village is to “create a place where Orcutt residents have the opportunity to play, live, and work close to home.”

On August 27th the project is scheduled for review by the Board of Supervisors. This will be a public hearing in which County Planning and Development staff will provide a report followed by discussion from members of the Board and the community. Approval is expected.

Philosophers have been known to expound on the virtues of both wine and creative expression. In Old Town Orcutt, you can find both at Lucia’s Wine Co.

Opened by Ben and Lucy Gonzales in 2010, Lucia’s serves up award winning wines in a warm, inviting atmosphere that draws customers who soon become friends.

When looking for ways to draw bigger crowds, Ben and Lucy decided to ask these same friends and customers what they would like to see. The answer: an open mic night.

“It started off with a bang and really took off,” says Ben, “We’ve had a great response. Some nights it’s standing room only.”

O p e n m i c p e r f o r m e r s include poets, m u s i c i a n s , rappers, and even comedians. Each Wednesday night, Lucia’s welcomes all ages and skill levels to show their stuff and to root each other on.

“The performers love coming,” says Lucy. “They feel free to express themselves because we don’t restrict them.”

A typical open mic night begins with the reading of poems. Regular John “PJ” Schrotel gets the crowd involved by having them give a thumbs up or thumbs down when he’s done reading and begins each performance with a resounding “Welcome to

the Coliseum!”Poetry usually gives way to music as

mesmerizing cadences and respectful silences become energetic guitar solos and cheerful clapping. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s couplets, honky-tonk, or pinot noir.

“People like the sense of community,” says Ben. “We’re here because we love wine and we wanted to share our love.”

In addition to offering fine wine and entertainment (with music on Fridays and Saturdays as well), Lucia’s will soon be opening a small kitchen and serving up pizzas from a wood burning stove.

“We’re very excited.”To find out more, visit www.lucias-wine-

Detective Tom Logan is at it again in local author Tony Piazza’s new novel A Murder Amongst Angels. In this sequel to Anything Short of Murder, Logan must track down the killer of a beautiful blonde actress in a mystery inspired by the real-life murder of film star Thelma Todd.

Readers fell in love with Piazza’s “hard-boiled, two-fisted” private eye after his first appearance and begged the author to bring him back and put him on a new case.

A lover of classic noir himself from a very young age, Piazza had just the right mystery for Mr. Logan. But first, a detour to 1960’s San Francisco. A result of his father’s work as the SFPD liaison to Warner Bros., Piazza not only worked on film and television sets, but also met many stars, including the legendary Steve McQueen, an experience he has shared in various ways over the years. Halfway through writing A Murder Amongst Angels he was approached to turn these reminiscences into the memoir Bullitt

Points: Memories of Steve McQueen & Bullitt. This short e-book now benefits the McQueen’s favorite charity, The Boys

Republic, and allowed Piazza to be a part of the Bullitt 45th anniversary celebrations.

From the streets of San Francisco back to the inves t iga t ion in Hollywood, Piazza was once again able to pick up Tom Logan and set him back on the trail of murderers and mobsters, corruption and intrigue.

In a style that readers have come to count on, the pages of this new thriller are filled with mystery, action, romance, and humor with more than a few twists and turns.

“It’s loosely based on a real-life murder that occurred in 1935 in Pacific Palisades,” he explains, “I used Thelma Todd as a framework for this new case. I used some of the same locations, like the café she owned.”

A Murder Amongst Angels gave Piazza the opportunity to revisit some of the characters from his first novel, including

minor characters, and “really flesh them out” as well as craft a double surprise ending.

“When I write I like to be very descriptive,” he shares, “I like to go to the areas I’m writing about and experience them. I took a couple of trips to LA. I visited the café, Angel’s Flight. I like to make the atmosphere believable.”

This method seems to be working, because it’s led to sold out books (including his second novel The Curse of the Crimson Dragon), great reviews, and a position as the President of the Central Coast chapter of the international crime writer’s organization Sisters in Crime.

With the support of Sisters in Crime and the SLO Night Writers and the encouragement of fans, Piazza plans to keep writing and already has a couple of stories in mind for old Tom Logan.

“It’s exciting,” he says, “This is what I’ve always wanted to do. It gives you a sense of accomplishment to see all of your books lined up at a bookstore.”

On Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29, 2013 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., the streets of Old Town Orcutt will be filled with beautiful color and live performing art as the Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation holds its Second Annual Old Orcutt Street Painting Festival. In the spirit of 16th century Italian street painting, children, adults and professional artists will be turning South Broadway Street into beautiful chalked squares of art. Festival Chairperson and Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation (OCAF) Board of Director Rick Corbo stated “We are very excited about the upcoming festival. Our goal was to hold a family-oriented event where families can come and spend the day enjoying art. As the State currently does not provide funding for arts in our schools, we are hopeful this Festival becomes a major fundraiser for OCAF. All proceeds from the event will benefit OCAF.”

The Orcutt Children's Arts Foundation was created in 2002 to support the visual and performing arts in the Orcutt Union School District. The foundation, recognizing the importance of the arts in the development of every child, supports arts in the Orcutt schools in a variety of ways. Each student in grades kindergarten through 6th receive lessons taught by professional artists in either dance, drama or visual arts each year. Classroom mini-grants funded by the Foundation support classroom projects and are awarded to teachers in the district through

a proposal competition each fall. The Foundation also supports special arts related projects and programs such as district band, district orchestral strings, drama and music programs throughout the district.

The Old Orcutt Street Painting Festival will open at 11 am for the public. There will be live music and other performing arts, food and drink, arts and crafts vendors and much more. PasspARTS

for children can be purchased for $10 which include a place to chalk, a box of chalk and access to the children arts section where they can create various art masterpieces in scheduled blocks throughout the day. People or businesses can sponsor a street painting square or to celebrate a person or interest or to advertise a business. Squares range from 6’x6’ ($150) to 10’x 10’ ($250). Sponsors can provide their own painter of any age or experience level for art of their choosing or OCAF can provide an artist who will have free reign to create their own masterpiece. Chalk is included in sponsorship. Sponsors will be recognized with an inscription in your square.. New this year will be contest categories: People’s Choice and Best in Theme with three age categories for emerging artists ages 13-17, ages 18-25. This year’s theme is “Central Coast Living”

This year’s major sponsors include Core Wine and Trattoria Uliveto.

Corbo shared, “If the cards are right, there might even be a flash-mob performance and a hot air balloon glow.”

If you want to sponsor squares, volunteer as an artist or become a vendor, please contact Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation at (805) 938-8966 or Rick Corbo at (805) 878-4010.

Orcutt Schools Update

I wrote in my July Pioneer column, longtime teacher and administrator Jan Yanagisako retired after 40+ years in the Orcutt School District. Taking over her position as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources will be Don Nicholson, the principal for the past three years at Joe Nightingale Elementary School. Don came to the Orcutt School District in 2007 from the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. His first assignment was as principal at May Grisham Elementary School. After three years, he moved to Joe Nightingale. Don has been very involved in many district level activities, including bargaining with both the certificated and classified unions. Don began his new job on July 1 and has been very busy this summer. …

Taking over for Don at Joe Nightingale will be his vice-principal, Julie Kozel. Julie is a local girl, having attended Alice Shaw, Lakeview, and Righetti High School as a student and graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Julie worked for the Lompoc Unified School District before coming to Orcutt. Her dedication to her profession and her ability to effectively collaborate with all stakeholders will serve her well at Joe Nightingale! …

Julie’s move into the principal’s office created a vice-principal vacancy. This vacancy was filled in July with the hiring of Joe Schmidt. Joe began his educational career as a Reading Specialist with the Chico Unified School District in 2004. He then

Back to School NotesBob Bush, Superintendent Orcutt Union School District

moved to Sacramento and began working for the Twin Rivers Unified School District as a teacher in grades 5, 6 and 7. In 2012, he became the vice-principal at Foothill Ranch Middle School. Joe and his family decided to move to the Central Coast, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have him at Joe Nightingale this year. …

In addition to Joe Nightingale School, the district also had a site administrator opening at Alice Shaw Elementary School. In June, the OUSD hired Jenee Severance as the principal. Jenee began her teaching career with the Lompoc Unified School District in 1996. She taught first through sixth grade at Crestview Elementary School and in 2009 became the principal at Miguelito Elementary School in Lompoc. During her four years at Miguelito, the school experienced Academic Performance Index (API) growth of 53 points under her leadership. The OUSD is very excited and fortunate to have Mrs. Severance as part of our team. …

And finally, in mid-July, Ted Lyon, our Orcutt Academy High School principal for the past three years, informed the district that he and his family would be moving to the San Diego area. Ted accepted an administrative position with the Murrieta Valley School District, and we wish him well. We are sad to lose Ted. Under his leadership and guidance, OAHS became a very high performing high school. …

Ted’s departure created an opportunity for Rhett Carter, our new principal. Rhett is a Santa Maria native who comes to Orcutt from the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District. In 2002, he was hired at Pioneer Valley High School as an English Language Development/Spanish teacher. In 2009, he became the Athletic Director at Pioneer Valley High School, and in 2011 he moved to Santa Maria High School as an Assistant Principal. I would add that he and his wife have four children, with another on

the way this fall. Rhett is going to do a wonderful job leading OAHS! …

Over the years, the start of the school year has crept into mid-August. Orcutt Academy High School began school on August 14, seventh graders at Lakeview and Orcutt junior high schools reported back on August 20, and all other sites started on August 21. If you are interested, 2013-2014 school calendars are available on our district website at www.orcutt-schools.net. …

In addition, I would like to share 2013 Back-To-School Night dates for our schools: OAHS, Thursday, August 22; Joe Nightingale, Tuesday, August 27; Ralph Dunlap, Wednesday, August 28; Lakeview and Orcutt, Thursday, August 29; OAK-8, Tuesday, September 3; Patterson Road, Wednesday, September 4; Pine Grove, Thursday, September 5; Alice Shaw, Wednesday, September 5; Olga Reed, Thursday, September 12. …

Our Campus Connection childcare program, which offers before- and after-school care at our five K-6 elementary schools, has openings for students. For information on this excellent program, phone 938-8950.

Here’s wishing everyone a fabulous 2013-2014 school year!

Superintendent Bob Bush can be contacted by phone at 938-8900 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Some notes for everyone as we begin the 2013-2014 school year:

As usual, we had a very busy summer. Our summer crews spent the summer working on projects that need to be completed while the students and teachers are on vacation. Some of the projects included resurfacing the hard courts at Lakeview Junior High School and the parking lot at Patterson Road School, and reconditioning the grass areas of Joe Nightingale School, Lakeview, and Patterson Road. …

Also during the summer, our district had a variety of student activities going on. We had CompassLearning in four school computer labs (Joe Nightingale, Olga Reed, Lakeview, and Pine Grove), Campus Connection childcare at Pine Grove, a Migrant Education summer program at Olga Reed, the OCAF Arts Academy and Safety Town at Joe Nightingale, a deaf/hard of hearing summer program at Ralph Dunlap, and a summer program for students with severe/profound needs at Alice Shaw. If you noticed activity on our campuses this summer, you now know why! …

In addition to all of this, each school was cleaned from top to bottom to get it ready for the first day of school. Our summer crews do a fantastic job of making our buildings and grounds look great for the new school year! …

Since the close of school in June, the district has made several changes to its administrative team. As

Trespassing Continues to be ProblemLast night [the caretaker] who looks after

both the Bonney and Hartnell Properties on Orcutt Hill, reported that on Orcutt Hill last evening, in a period OF LESS THAN 2 HOURS, he observed: - Fresh bike tracks on #14 of Hartnell Property ( which had not been there two hours earlier). The bike tracks have been in the same area 2 times in the past week. - Three groups of hikers/bikers who were trespassing on the Bonney property - a hiker (on private property near the Bonney property) who, when asked why he wastrespassing became belligerent and said that [the caretaker] was jealous because he was too old to hike or to bike.

FIVE incidents in less than TWO hours !!!!!!

I had hoped that when the Rice Ranch trails were opened up, the amount of trespassing on private property would diminish. Unfortunately this has not been the case. Instead certain elements of the hikers/bikers, who know they are trespassing on private property, continue to do so with impunity.

Dignity Health Hospice serves northern Santa Barbara County to north San Luis Obispo County.

Hospice neither hastens nor postpones

death, as the process is one that unfolds uniquely for each of us. Our team plays a unique and critical role in the care of the patient. The team works together in providing physical, social and spiritual care to our patients and families. Most often our Hospice team provides care in the home but our services are also available in residential care facilities and nursing homes. Home is where the patient is.

Hospice is not only for people with cancer. We have patients on service with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, heart and liver disease…the list goes on.

A necessary part of Dignity Health Hospice is the volunteer. At Dignity Health Hospice, we are in need of English and Spanish speaking volunteers. If you have free time or have been looking for a unique and grace-filled opportunity to serve, then Hospice is a great organization to be a part of.

Remember: Dying takes place on the last day of your life. The other days are about living. This is what we do at Dignity Health Hospice. Help you to live comfortably until your last day. For more information about Dignity Health Hospice or to volunteer, call 739-3830.

which includes soccer, work, and an Anatomy class. I am super excited about scholarship day because it will help me get a couple of steps further towards reaching my goals.”

Greg Steinberger, the founder of Doc Burnstein’s, greatly values education. This value has made him donate 10% of all sales to schools in our community. He also recently started Fundraising Nights, where local schools have the opportunity to raise money for their school by receiving 15%

of the proceeds from that night. “Giving back to the community” has always been Greg Steinberger’s motto and awarding scholarships is a way for him to give back to his employees. Scholarship day portrays a sense of teamwork amongst the community and Doc’s employees.

Scholarship Day takes place in both the Arroyo Grande and the Orcutt parlors. Both parlors are open from 11:00am-9:30pm. The Orcutt parlor is located at 168 W. Clark Avenue in Old Town Orcutt. The Arroyo Grande parlor is located at 114 W. Branch Street.
