I know by now all of you that live within the Village limits must have received their new “Recyling Container”. We also got one here at the Senior Center remember the one with the yellow lid is for recycling only. Yesterday someone came in and said that our recycling container outside our back door is filled with garbage. I can’t hardly believe that someone would do

that. Please help us remind everyone that the Yellow Lids are not for garbage. We had a great turn out for Bunco on March 27. I thank Darleen Sandheinrich for her hard work and for recruiting all the volunteers and bakers she does. We made a total of $2,270 including a matching donation we received after Bunco. Thank you for your support. We also had another successful Dining Out fundraiser at West End on Monday, March 31. Thanks to all our devoted supporters and the generosity of West End Tavern and Restaurant the Sandra M Bereitschaft Foundation received $500. It was lots of fun seeing and visiting with everyone that came. Your commitment is much appreciated. Without supporters like you our programs would not be possible.

Bunco Event Raises 1,135 The night of March 27, was much like any night in February or March, cold, windy, with a threat of rain. The weather did not keep some 120 Bunco players from having a great time at St. James Parish and raising $1,135. Spirits were high inside the St. James Parish Center as Darleen Sandheinrich, Shirley Rinck and the “Bunco Babes” did their dice rolling magic and offered a large selection of delicious cakes pies and other desserts and attendance prizes. The Senior Center would like to thank everyone who played Bunco, donated prizes or desserts or helped in any way to make this a very successful fundraiser. Every dollar raised will support the Millstadt Township’s Meals on Wheels program. Watch for the next Bunco event that will take place next fall, at the St. James Parish Center.

AARP Tax-Aide Available

A free tax preparation service is offered every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through April 10th. Phone the center at 618-476-3731 to schedule an appointment. Trained representatives Karen Buchheit and Cindy Keller will help prepare your taxes. Note that this program is not intended for those whose tax returns are complex. Please bring copies of your 2013 tax return to the tax preparation sessions. In addition, bring all W-2 and 1099 forms, as well as all reports of income received, such as social security, sale of securities and redemption of mutual funds. If you sold securities or redeemed mutual funds, bring records of dates of acquisition and costs; these are required to calculate the amount of gain or loss. If you itemize deductions, bring records for all deductible expenses. Also bring your checkbook if you want to arrange for direct deposit of any refund(s) due (which we encourage) and your spouse if you’re married.

4th Annual Big Ole Bag And Jewelry Sale The fourth annual Big Old Bag and Jewelry Sale will have a special pre-sale wine and cheese party on Friday, April 25 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. For $5.00, payable at the door, enjoy some cheese, wine, and soft drinks and have the opportunity to purchase gently used purses, hats, jewelry and scarves at very special prices. On Saturday, April 26, the doors to the Community Center will open at 8:00 am all the remaining items will be for sale until 1:00 pm. Donations of all purses, jewelry, hats and scarves are accepted at the Community Center. All proceeds from the Friday and Saturday sales benefit the Millstadt Senior Center

Recycling Program Recycling continues the first Saturday of every month at the Township Garage on East Harrison Street. Volunteers will remove the recyclables, glass, cans, paper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics from your vehicle from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. This program is available for all residents of Millstadt Township and the Village.

On Sunday, April 6 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm there will an open house at the Millstadt Food Pantry located at East Elm and South Jefferson Streets. Everyone is invited to attend. Light Refreshments will be provided and Donations accepted. The renovation project has been by Sarah Gruenewald for her Gold Star Award with her Girl Scout Troop 463 in Millstadt. Sarah is the daughter of David and Sharon Gruenewald and granddaughter of the late Lester and Ruth Gruenewald of Millstadt and Ron Martin & JoAnn Martin.

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

Senior Exercise Class Senior Center volunteer, Kathy Demond leads this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-9:45 a.m. Stretching, toning, sit and be fit exercises and walking are incorporated in this exercise program. Coffee, treats and socialization follow.

The Millstadt Township Senior Center Wii Bowling league is wrapping up their final weeks of bowling and are looking forward to their banquet on April 16th. We will celebrate with breakfast and prizes for all bowlers. If you would like to be part of this group next season give us a call at 476-3731.

MARCELLA KLEIN from Paderborn is just like the energizer bunny. At 94 years young, she is still very active going to the Smithton senior center and doing exercises every week. She loves to go out with her family and friends and play Bunco and Euchre. She celebrated her 94th birthday on Thursday, February 27, with a perfect Euchre hand at the Bullpen in New Athens with fellow Euchre players. Garden Place - Resident Spotlight

We live here. We care here.

We are happy to celebrate Charlotte Thomas as our Spotlight of the Month. Charlotte has been a member of the Garden Place – Millstadt community since March 2012. Charlotte was born in Quincy Illinois where she lived till she married, the great love of her life, the late Jim Thomas. Charlotte feels blessed to have spent 60 wonderful years with Jim. Jim’s job brought them to this are after they wed. Charlotte was a homemaker raising the couples 5 children, 1 girl and 4 boys. She is blessed with 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Married life was such a joy to Charlotte. As a couple they liked to go to the local dances and polka. Even though she says that Jim probably went more for her than himself. Every year they went to Daytona Beach, Florida to celebrate their birthdays. While Charlotte considers being a wife and homemaker her primary job in life. She also worked as a certified nurse’s assistant at Memorial Hospital for 5 years and was a very successful sales lady for the Avon Corporation. She sold Avon for 25 years and is to this day a very loyal customer. Reading and bingo are some of Charlottes most enjoyable past times. She enjoys the newspaper, but will often lose sleep staying up with a good book. Although it is hard to pull Charlotte from a good book, you can always count on Bingo to do the trick. Charlotte says “Everyone here at Garden Place knows how much I love to come out and play bingo." Charlotte loves the food here at Garden Place. Her favorite meal is turkey and dressing, light on the gravy. She says the cooks here are excellent. They even remember the little things and it makes her feels special.

Deviled Egg Recipe If the Easter Bunny left you with some extra hard boiled eggs the following recipe will provide a use for the eggs and make a great side dish. Remember to serve with some raw carrots. 12 hardboiled eggs, peeled ½ cup mayonnaise 1½ teaspoons white vinegar 1½ teaspoon Dijon mustard Slice eggs in half lengthwise, and remove yolks. Mash together yolks, mayo, mustard, and vinegar in medium bowl until well blended. Spoon mixture into egg whites and garnish with paprika.

They had a special family time with her before the Garden Place activities started. fact that both are buried on Union Hill, but in unmarkrd graves. Martha Askins, daughter of Philemon and Philena, married Joshua Hughes on July 28, 1831. The place of their wedding is unknown. From this union sprang two generations, but no descendant lived near Millstadt. Joshua Hughes was Howard Hughes' great-grandfather. He was the first blacksmith in Millstadt, known then as Centreville, and opened the first coal mine southeast of the hamlet. Joshua Hughes and his. brother-in-law, Charles T. Askins, enlisted in the Army for the Black Hawk Indian War. Shortly after being mustered out of the Army, Hughes bought a farm one mile due north of Millstadt on what is now State Route 163. He built a two-story brick house on the newly acquired land, which he owned from 1836 until 1844. In that house was born Howard Hughes' grandfather, Felix Turner Hughes. The year was 1842. The house, as well as the barn, is still 'in use. Felix Turner Hughes later, moved to Memphis, Mo., where he was admitted to the bar and then moved to Lancaster, Mo. He later moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where he gained fame as a lawyer, president and general counsel of the Keokuk and Western Railroad Co., mayor of Keokuk and later a judge. He married Jean Summerlin of Memphis, Mo., in 1869. To them was born a son, Howard Robard Hughes (1869-1924), the father of Howard Hughes. Other children were Greta, wife of Howard Witherspoon, New York City; Rupert Hughes, (1872-1956), the famous novelist; and Felix Hughes Jr., Cleveland, Ohio. Howard Robard Hughes married Alene Gano in 1904. He made a fortune, not in oil itself, but royalty from every barrel of oil brought from the earth by a drill bit that was his invention. Howard Robard Hughes and Alene Gano Hughes had a son born on Dec. 24, 1905, Howard Hughes, who rose to fame and then died a recluse. With Philemon and Philena Askins on Union Hill are buried other members of the Askins Family. They are: Charles T. (May 27, 1810, to March 11, 1885); George P. (1864 to 1936); Jane M. (died Nov. 24, 1832); John W. (Nov. 12, 1858, to Oct. 2, 1880); and Malinda, wife of Charles T. (Nov. 24, 1832, to May 9, 1904), Adjoining the Hughes-Askins plot are buried early settlers of the area and their descendents. Both cemeteries are kept in good condition for preservation for generations yet to be born.

On a wooded hillside, one mile east of Millstadt, not far from State Route 158, is a cemetery. Probably, a

million people have sped past it in automobiles in the years not knowing it existed; and those who did, cared little. The cemetery is the Hughes-

Askins Cemetery on Union Hill, named for the Union Meeting House and Church, built in 1819. Beneath stately oak, tall hickory and spreading cottonwood trees are buried the ancestors of billionaire Howard Hughes of Texas oil, Hollywood, the "Spruce Goose" and international fame. PhiIemon and Philena Staton-Askins were the great-great-grandparents of Howard Hughes. The Hughes and Askins were natives of Virginia and Maryland, respectively. On their west-ward trek, Philemon and Philena first settled near Louisville, Ky., where nine children were born and then in Grayson County. where three children were born. In late 1819, they arrived in Illinois, a new state, 1 year old. They came to visit a daughter, Nancy, married to the Rev. John Bloom. What they saw of the area quickened their hearts and seemed to be a good place to live, love and die in. They returned to Kentucky to bring their 12 children to the new land in February 1820. Philena died in 1826 and her husband followed in May 1831, at the age of 63. Records attest to the

Social Security District Manager in East St. Louis, IL April is Stress Awareness Month, but one thing that should never cause you stress is doing business with Social Security. However, if you fall victim to fraud, it can really stress you out, not to mention damage your credit score and wallet. We encourage you to be cautious of suspicious email, letters, and phone calls or any time someone asks for your personal information. Generally, Social Security will not call or email you and ask for your personal information, such as your Social Security number or banking information. If someone contacts you and asks for this kind of information and claims to be from Social Security, do not give out your personal information without first contacting us to verify the validity of the request. It could be an identity thief phishing for your personal information. Contact our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). Report suspicious calls to our Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, or online at http://oig.ssa.gov using the “Fraud, Waste, and Abuse” link. When making a report, please include as many of the following details as possible: The alleged suspect(s) and victim(s) names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers; Description of the fraud and the location where the fraud took place; When and how the fraud was committed; Why the person committed the fraud (if known); and Who else has knowledge of the potential violation. Identity theft is one of the fastest-growing crimes in America. MASC Presents Our Town Monroe Actors Stage Company will present playwright Thornton Wilder’s Our Town April 4-6 and April 11-13. Our Town is set in the fictional town of Grovers Corners, New Hampshire, it tells about life in a small town where nothing special happens. Emily Feazel, from Millstadt, has been cast in a leading role and portrays Emily Webb, a teenager growing up in Grovers Corner. There is no scenery and no props in the play representing a simple life in a simple town. MASC will present daytime shows for area junior high students. Performances will be held April 4-6 and April 11-13. Curtain time is 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday and Sunday matinees are 2:30 pm. Local Pastry Chef At The Senior Center

Mary Ann Schaefer, a local pastry chef was at the Senior Center on Tuesday, March 4 to demonstrate how she bakes her delicious pies. She demonstrated how to bake Sparkling Cherry Pie. Everyone gathered their chairs close to not to miss any of the steps. The cherries were frozen fresh cherries from Eckert’s Market as were some of the pastry tools she used. She then added 1 1/3 cups of sugar to her 4 cups of cherries and then ½ cup of tapioca to thicken and 1 teaspoon of salt. The most intense and fun to watch was the making of the crust and how she handled the dough and made it into the perfect pie crust. She has a little ceramic type bird she put in the middle of the pie and cut the top crust so that the birds head could stick out. We were told that this allows for the steam in the pie to escape. After baking in the oven and resting to cool, everyone was able to sample a slice. Mary Ann also brought along a Peach Custard, Butternut Squash and Apple Crumb pies that she had baked that morning. It was fun morning and everyone enjoyed, thank you Mary Ann.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.

Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

A new season is also a chance to clean up your space, go through your closets and drawers, and donate items you don’t wear anymore. Besides doing a great deed, you’ll rid yourself of unnecessary clutter, feel great and have room for new clothes! Porch Sale will be Saturday April 19th to benefit the Senior Center. The Sandra M Bereitschaft Foundation also received this month their first official grant award. We received a $400 grant from the St Clair County Medical Society Alliance. These funds will be used to educate and promote information about the Meals on Wheels program. This award was possible because of our new 501c status. The mission of the Foundation is to solely support the Millstadt Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels program. There is a lot going on here and we are smack dab in the middle of our fundraiser season. Events coming up include Trivia Night, Porch Sale and the Big Ole Bag and Jewelry Sale. Then we will take a break for a few months. These past three months I have sent out over 183 thank you notes. Thank for your wonderful generosity and if I forgot you, please let me know I didn’t do it on purpose.

Over The Tower Millstadt Community Cross Walk Good Friday, April 18 at Noon

The Millstadt Senior Center will participate in the 8th

annual community Cross Walk,

on Good Friday, April 18th at noon.

We expect the Cross Walk to be at the Center

between 12:20 pm and 12:30 pm. The purpose is to lift up the saving work

that Jesus Christ performed on the cross for all who

believe Him, by bringing the Christians of Millstadt together to carry a

wooden cross through our community. At each location, a local church official will speak one of the phrases that Jesus Christ spoke from the cross (His last 7 words), with a brief explanation, thought and prayer. The Millstadt Senior Center will be the second stop on the Walk. Our reflection phrase will be from Luke 23: 39-43. The entire walk is 1.9 miles and begins at the Millstadt Primary Center (Pastor Weber speaks) and continues to Senior Center, Garden Place (Pastor David Krueger), Zion Evangelical Church (Pastor Darrell Weber) , Creason Funeral Home (Pastor Terry Delaney), St James(Father Marvin Volk) and ends at Millstadt Baptist Church(Pastor Ray Brewer).
