How will a mother feel if youdisagree with her, or criticize, or tellher that it is nothing to be upset orto worry about?

    5/31

You may make her feel that she iswrong. This reduces herconfidence. She may not want to

    say any more to you.

So it is important not to disagree

    with a mother.

    6/31

It is also important not to agree with

a mistaken idea. You may want tosuggest something quite different. That can be difficult if you already

    agreed with her.

Instead, you just accept what she

thinks or feels. Accepting meansresponding in a neutral way, and notagreeing or disagreeing.

    SKILL 3.

    GIVE PRACTICAL HELP

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    14/31

    Sometimes practical help is better

    than saying anything. Forexample:

when a mother feels tired or dirty

or uncomfortablewhen she is hungry or thirsty

when she has had a lot of

    information already

when she has a clear practicalproblem.

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    15/31

    Question:

What kind of practical helpmight you offer?

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    16/31

Some ways to give practical help:Help to make her clean and

    comfortable.

Give her a drink, or something toeat.

Hold the baby yourself, while she

gets comfortable, or washes, orgoes to the toilet.

    No, I have not

    breastfed him yet

    My breasts are empty

and it is too painful to

    sit up!

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    18/31

    Which response is moreappropriate?

You should let your baby sucklenow to help your breast milk to

    come in.

Let me try to make you more

comfortable, and then Ill bringyou a drink.

    SKILL 4.

    GIVE A LITTLE RELEVANTINFORMATION

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    20/31

Try to give information that is

relevant to her situation NOW.Tell her things that she can usetoday, not in few weeks time.

Explaining the reason for adifficulty is often the most

relevant information when ithelps a mother to understandwhat is happening.

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    21/31

Try to give only one or twopieces of information at a

time, especially if a mother istired, and has alreadyreceived a lot of information.

  • 8/12/2019 Session 10 Building Confidence and Giving Support

    22/31

Give information in a positive way, so

that it does not sound critical, ormake the mother think that she hasbeen doing something wrong. This isespecially important if you want to

    correct a mistaken idea.

For example, instead of saying Thin

porridge is not good for your baby, you could say: Thick foods help thebaby to grow.
