Holiday Independent Practice

Student’s Name: Date:

Summer Vacation is probably the best time of the year for you all; it’s time

for loads of ice cream, time to visit grandparents and getting pampered to no end and

of course bonding with cousins. School is fun too, with learning happening at all times,

summer vacation can also be a time for learning with lots of activities around.

Here are few tasks for you to be completed during

the vacation. Do remember to complete the given

tasks after reading them carefully. You need to bring

your research work to school on the first day of school

without fail.

Happy Holidays!

Some Tips to make these holidays special:

● Have a family dinner every day of the holidays.

● Play board games with your parents and sibling

and show them who is the smartest.

● Visit your grandparents and relatives whom you

have not seen for a few years.

● Spend some quality time with an elderly person

in the family or neighborhoods.

TOPIC i) Identification of properties of rational numbers.

ii) Framing a linear equation and solving it experimentally.

CONTENT COVERAGE i) Rational Numbers

ii) Linear equations in One variable

NATURE OF TASK Individual activity

LEARNING OBJECTIVES i) Students will be able to develop mathematical and

problem solving skills. They will understand and apply

the properties of Rational Numbers.

ii) Students will learn to solve a linear equation in one variable experimentally.

INSTRUCTION: Do both the tasks in A-4 sheets.

TASK -1

numerical expression that represents the use of

properties of Rational numbers.

Identify the boxes where same property of rational

numbers is applicable.

Colour the boxes with same property in one colour .

Colour the boxes with same second property in

another colour.

Explain your observation as per the given format in the

end.

TASK 2

PROCEDURE: Convert the following situation in linear equation in

one variable and solve it experimentally by cutting and

pasting method.

The steps have been shown with the help of an

example given in the end. Kindly refer to it. Question

Swastik is 5 years younger than Roli. Four years later, Roli will be twice as old as Swastik. Find their present ages.

Criteria / Rubrics for assessment Task 1 : 4 marks

Task 2 : 4 marks

Presentation : 2 marks

Values imparted through the Activities

Learning by doing.

Activity contains variety of hands on activities, multistep

solutions and more. It will encourage student’s critical

thinking, brain storming skills and help the students to

know that there can be more than one way to solve

the problems.

Students will learn the application and importance of

mathematics in daily life.

Follow up Discussion about the activity will be done by the teacher

and students will share their experiences. More

such interesting activities can be taken up through

the session.

TASK 1

Topic- Rational Numbers

OBJECTIVE: To understand and apply the properties of Rational numbers.

PROCEDURE:

Step 1 Some expressions are mentioned in the following boxes.

Step 2 Identify the boxes that represent the use of same property of Rational numbers.

Step 3 Colour the boxes (having same property) in one colour.

Step 4 Identify the boxes using second property and colour them using second colour.

Step 5 In this way boxes showing same property will be colored in same colour.

Step 6 Mention the property used by first colour, second colour and so on.

TASK 2

STEPS FOR SOLVING A LINEAR EQUATION IN

ONE VARIABLE EXPERIMENTALLY BY CUTTING

AND PASTING.

TOPIC : Linear equations in one variable.

OBJECTIVE: To solve linear equation in one variable

experimentally.

MATERIAL REQUIRED: Glazed paper

Drawing sheet

Geometry box

A pair of scissors

Fevistick

PRE-REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE: Addition and subtraction

Addition or subtraction of a number on both sides of

the linear equation does not cause any effect on the

equation.

PROCEDURE: Let us solve a linear equation i.e., 3x – 3 = 2x + 1

Cut off nine rectangular strips of size 4 cm × 1 cm of

red colour.

Cut off ten squares of size 1 cm × 1 cm of green

colour.

With the help of rectangular strips and squares, let us

represent the linear equation 3x – 3 = 2x + 1 as shown

in fig. 1.

Page 7: Session: 2019-2020 Grade VIII Holiday Independent Practice · Swastik is 5 years younger than Roli. Four years later, Roli will be twice as old as Swastik. Find their present ages

From both sides subtract ( or remove ) two red rectangular strips i.e., 2x as shown in fig. 2,

Now we have 3x – 2 x – 3 = 2x – 2x + 1

We get x – 3 = 1 as shown in fig. 3.

Now we add 3 green squares on both sides as shown in fig. 4. Now we have x – 3 + 3 = 1 +

3.

We get x = 1 + 3 as shown in fig.5.

Now from the above step, we get x = 4 as shown in fig. 6.

OBSERVATION:

Page 8: Session: 2019-2020 Grade VIII Holiday Independent Practice · Swastik is 5 years younger than Roli. Four years later, Roli will be twice as old as Swastik. Find their present ages

We observe that x = 4 from the activity. So, we put x = 4 in the given equation, 3x – 3 = 2x + 1 We get, 3 × 4 – 3 = 2 × 4 + 1 ⇒ 12 – 3 = 8 + 1 ⇒ 9 = 9 Hence, x = 4 is the required solution of the given equation.
