Success is a matter of CONTENT and CONTEXT; "the messenger" is equally as important as "the message." We as music educators have the opportunity to awaken the creative spirit within each child through music learning and music making. Being able to focus the collective energy of any group is the cornerstone to musical EXCELLENCE. From the moment the students walk into the class until the final bell rings, there must be a sense of purpose. If you are a good teacher, the students will admire and respect you. If you are a GREAT TEACHER, the students will admire and respect themselves. Presenter Biography: Tim Lautzenheiser began his teaching career at Northern Michigan University. He then moved to the University of Missouri, and from there to New Mexico State University. During that time, Tim developed highly acclaimed groups in both instrumental and vocal music. Following his tenure in the college band directing world, he spent three years with McCormick’s Enterprises working as Executive Director of Bands of America. In 1981, Tim created Attitude Concepts for Today, Inc., an organization designed to manage the many requests for teacher inservice workshops, student leadership seminars, and convention speaking engagements focusing on the area of effective leadership training. After thirtyplus years of clinic presentations, some three million students have experienced one of his popular sessions. Tim presently serves as Vice President of Education for ConnSelmer, Inc. He holds degrees from Ball State University and the University of Alabama; in 1995 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the VanderCook College of Music. He continues to teach as an adjunct faculty member at: Ball State University, Indiana­Purdue/Ft. Wayne University, and Butler University. In addition, he is a member of the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors and the Western International Band Clinic/American Band College Board of Directors. He is presently the Chair of the National Association for Music Education Music Honor Society (Tri­M).

Session Title : All of the Days I Learned Nothing: How to Stop Sabotaging Your Ensemble. Session Description: How much do our students learn in our daily rehearsals? How much do we learn in our daily rehearsals? This session looks at ways we, as teachers, sometimes inhibit the musical growth of our students, and ourselves. How can the rehearsal become a better learning environment for all involved? Presenter Biography: Dr. Mark Stickney is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Bands at Plymouth State University, where he conducts the Symphonic Band, and teaches courses in conducting, instrumental music education, and applied low brass. In addition, he coordinates the graduate instrumental music education program, the New England Band Directors Institute, and the All New England Band Festival. Dr. Stickney regularly conducts honors ensembles throughout the country and is an active clinician throughout the New England Region. In 2016, he was named Artistic Director of the Seacoast Wind Ensemble, in Kittery, ME.

Session Title: Pacific Song: On Community Singing Around the Pacific Session Description: From Korean community choirs to Hawaiian kanekapila, Ohio shape note singings to Baltic songfests, community singing is a timeless tradition spanning cultures, languages, and ages. In Pacific Song, Dr. Miguel Ángel Felipe from Honolulu introduces choral culture in the Pacific Basin and East Asia while teaching us new songs! Presenter Biography: Dr. Miguel Ángel Felipe is associate professor and director of choral activities at Boston University (ad interim) and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in Honolulu. Felipe is active across the US and in Asia, South America, and Europe as conductor, teacher, clinician, workshop leader, and adjudicator. Upcoming and recent engagements include

Felipe is national vice president of the National Collegiate Choral Organization and serves as vice/past president of the Hawai‘i ACDA.

Session Title: Signs, Lines, and Talking Slime: Effective Elementary Classroom Management Session Description: Bounding with endless energy, elementary students can be a blast to teach! Yet how do you balance lessons, time, and assessments with such an active crew? This session will delve into some critical components of effective classroom management and offer strategies, resources, and action­oriented takeaways for your elementary music classes. Presenter Biography: Danielle Ingram is currently in her 12th year of teaching preschool through 4th grade general music/chorus in Little Falls, NJ. She also serves as a Clinical Educator and District Mentor, advising pre­service and novice music teachers on a variety of topics including curriculum creation, classroom management, special needs learners, and teaching music from a cart. Ms. Ingram received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Delaware and a Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Westminster Choir College. She is the creator and content writer for www.MusicOnACart.com and welcomes all correspondence.

Session Title: J azz All State: Preparing for the Instrumental Audition Session Description: An overview of how to prepare for the Instrumental Jazz All State Audition. Presenter Biography: Marc LaForce is a 1990 graduate of the University Of New Hampshire where he studied Saxophone with Stanley Hettinger, David Seiler & Charlie Jennison. Marc has played saxophone in the Seacoast area since the late 1980’s, performing with such legends as Clark Terry, Bob Mintzer, Peter Erskine, Ed Shaughnessy and Louis Bellson. Marc has also been an active member on the local scene for a long time performing as a soloist with the Seacoast Big Band (1990­present), Portland Jazz Orchestra (2007­2012), State Street Rhythm and Blues (1999­2004), The New Hampshire Music Festival Pops Orchestra and the Portland Symphony

Session Title: Wholistic Rhythm Learning ­ Cut the Learning Curve up to 90%! Session Description: This is a thorough explanation of how to teach our system so that every student can easily understand what is on the paper and how to play it correctly! It will rid the question, “How does it go?” from classrooms! Participants will gain new insights into how to teach our system cohesively from the ground up. Presenter Biography: Kevin Fuhrman, Percussionist/Composer/Author, has created a paradigm­changing approach to teaching Rhythm. With 26+ years of research and development, this approach has proven to not only teach Rhythm, but also teach the tools so students can understand and perform what they read. No guessing, following their neighbor or hiding ­ this works! Mr. Fuhrman has lead his own Steel Pan ensemble, 33o North, for 25+ years, performed with nationally and been a resource for Percussion knowledge around the US. He has composed for Percussion, Band, Orchestra and Choir. The books authored have been sold in 15 states and growing!

Session Title: Performance by the 39th Army Band Session Description: The 39th Army Band ensemble will feature a mix of horns with a rhythm section. The group will offer a wide range of musical selections with a short discussion on their mission as an Army band. Presenter Biography: The 39th Army Band, New Hampshire Army National Guard can trace its lineage back 138 years to its inception in Manchester in 1879. When activated for the Spanish American War, it was known as the Band Section, 1st Infantry, New Hampshire National Guard. During World War I, it became known as the Band Section for 1st Army Headquarters Regiment. During World War II, it was known as the band for 172nd Field Artillery, New Hampshire. Since 1947, it has been known by its current designation 39th Army Band New Hampshire Army National Guard.

Session Title: The Practical Art of Conducting Session Description: This session focuses on thinking less about the Art of movement and more about how common physical mannerisms can fuel expressive performances. Session Title: Band Music Selection: What and Why? Session Description: Band Music Selection is focused on my dissertation research, asking the question “why do we choose the music that we choose?”. Moreover, if we have criteria that we agree to related to selection of music, do we actually use it? Presenter Biography: Dr. R. Tad Greig is the Director of Instrumental Activities and Professor of Music in the School of Music at Westminster College. As the Director of Instrumental Activities, Dr. Greig is the founder and conductor of the Wind Ensemble. He is the founder of the college Jazz Ensemble. He also directs the Symphonic Band and “Titan” Marching Band. In Music Education, Dr. Greig co­supervises student teachers, teaches Secondary Instrumental Methods, Instrumental Conducting, Advanced Conducting, Band Literature and Marching Band Techniques. Dr. Greig is also the conductor of the North Pittsburgh Symphonic Band, Pittsburgh, PA. He has been a guest speaker throughout the Eastern United States.

Session Title: All State Sight Reading Session Description: At All­State Auditions this year, several of us who have adjudicated in the sight­reading/chorale room for several years had a minor epiphany. We realized that many of you have not been through the NH All­State Audition, and perhaps the state hasn’t done a good enough job at preparing you to prepare your students for this part of the audition. While nearly every year there is a session in April or October on preparing the next aria in the cycle, none of us can remember doing a mock session for the Sight­Reading and Chorale. So – join me and several other colleagues as we present a mock sight­reading audition, a sample script for how it typically goes, common errors we see and a question/answer session on everything you ever wanted to know about sight­reading and the annual chorale. We’re looking forward to it!

Presenter Biography: Heidi Welch is the 2013 NH Teacher of the Year and a 2013 finalist for National Teacher of the

Year. She has been teaching music in NH since 1996, the last 20 years of which have been at

Hillsboro­Deering High School where she teaches Band, Chorus, Music Composition, and Guitar

as well as American History through Music, Musical Theater Appreciation, and Film Music. An

adjunct professor at Keene State College, she teaches educational and music elective courses and

has presented workshops in the areas of assessment, music electives, and teacher motivation all

over New England. She is currently serving as President of NH Music Educators Association

and Recording Secretary for NH Band Directors Association.

Session Title: Steinway & Sons K12 program: can we help your school and district? Session Description: Presentation and discussion about Steinway & Sons New K­12 initiative and how it

can benefit you, your school and your district.

Presenter Biography: Gary Girouard is the New England representative for the Education Division of Steinway & Sons

(New York). Mr. Girouard holds a music education degree from the University of Connecticut

and has spent over 25 years working in the piano and education markets. Mr. Girouard is

responsible for helping Steinway & Sons roll out its new K12 initiative to schools and districts in

parts of New Hampshire and across New England.

Session Title: Surviving Student Conducting: For Collegiates Session Description: This session will include my personal experiences of being a student conductor and how the experience affected my college career. As I have had the opportunity to explore both choral and wind band conducting, I will talk about the differences between conducting a band compared to a choir. Presenter Biography: Callie Carmosino is from Hubbardston, MA. She graduated from Quabbin Regional High School in 2014, where she played in the Symphonic Winds Ensemble, Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble, and sang in the Quabbin Singers. Callie is currently a senior Music Performance major at Keene State College in Keene, NH. She is a primary bassoonist, but also studies flute and voice. Callie has performed with the KSC Concert Band, Orchestra, Chamber Singers, Contemporary Ensemble, Woodwind Quintet, Concert Choir, Flute Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Saxophone Ensemble. Callie currently serves as the president of the American Choral Directors Association student chapter.

Session Title: Strategies for Introducing Jazz Improvisation to Your Students Session Description: Jazz needn’t be mysterious or intimidating. Like all other musical skills, improvisation must be taught, assimilated, and practiced. This session will introduce a variety of fun, improvisatory exercises which can easily be incorporated into rehearsals and lessons. (Feel free to bring your instruments.) Session Title: Jazz Rhythm Section Techniques and Solutions. Session Description: Addressing and fine­tuning the rhythm section can be daunting for wind­playing directors. Earl MacDonald is a composer, arranger, pianist and educator specializing in jazz. Originally from Canada, the former musical director for Maynard Ferguson is now the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Connecticut. MacDonald earned a bachelor of music degree in jazz performance at McGill University and a master of music degree at Rutgers, where he apprenticed with Kenny Barron. He is an active clinician, guest conductor and teacher at summer camps including UMASS’ Jazz­In­ July program. MacDonald’s last two recordings received JUNO award nominations for jazz album of the year.

Biography: Jim Wickham

Session Title: Choral Warm­Ups Session Description: Do your students ever walk into rehearsals with little motivation? What we, as teacher­conductors, do in the first ten minutes sets the stage for the entire rehearsal. This workshop explores fun warm­ups for all ages that energize the body, awaken the imagination, establish focus, and warm up the voice simultaneously. Presenter Biography: Dr. Jamie Hillman is a multifaceted musician who is active as a singer, pianist, conductor, music educator, and composer. He serves as an assistant professor of music at Gordon College in Wenham, MA, where he teachers undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and directs the Gordon College Choir and Men’s Choir. As a Boston University Prison Arts Scholar, he has co­initiated a thriving music program at a large, medium­high security prison in MA.

Hillman is an examiner for Conservatory Canada, and has adjudicated and presented at

conferences and festivals throughout Canada, the United States, and Southeast Asia.

Session Title: Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Standards?: Deconstructing the National Core Arts

Standards for General Music

Session Description: This session will help attendees gain a more thorough understanding of the new National Core

Arts Standards for general music. Key terminology, the artistic processes, knowledge, skills and

dispositions within the standards will be dissected so that attendees will have greater confidence

in how the standards relate to their classroom teaching.

Presenter Biography: Dr. Erin Zaffini earned a Bachelor in Music from Keene State College, a Master of Music degree

from Temple University and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. She is

an adjunct music professor at Keene State College, where she supervises student teachers, and

teaches undergraduate music courses in general music education methods, music curriculum and

assessment, music fundamentals and adaptive music. She is also a faculty member for the

University of New Hampshire’s Professional Development Department, where she teaches

in­service teachers how use general music education methods to integrate music and movement

into the K­8 classroom, and teaches methods in early childhood music and movement. Prior to

entering higher education, she has taught K­8 general music, choral music, instrumental music,

handbell ensemble, and musical theatre. She is an active clinician and choral and vocal

adjudicator in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. As a clinician in New Hampshire for the

National Education Association and the New Hampshire Music Educators Association, she

provides workshops on using folk dance in the general music classroom, integrating music and

movement in the K­8 setting, early childhood music and movement, and helping induct

preservice music teachers into the profession. She has also served as a general music clinician for

NAfME’s Eastern Division conference. Dr. Zaffini is the Eastern Division Representative for

NAfME’s Council for General Music Education, the General Music Chair and Collegiate

Coordinator for the New Hampshire Music Educators Association, and serves on the Advisory

Committee for Music Educators Journal. She is also a member of the Society for Music Teacher

Education, where she is currently involved in one of the Areas for Strategic Planning and Action

committees to support novice music teacher induction and mentoring. As an ASPA member, she

is presently co­authoring articles to support music teacher mentors, and taking steps to institute

formal mentor training in every state. In addition to NAfME and SMTE, Dr. Zaffini holds

professional memberships in the College Music Society and the International Society for Music

Education. She has presented her masters­level research at the Thompson Research Symposium

at Pennsylvania State University, and most recently, her doctoral research at the Music Research

and Teacher Education National Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2016. She has published

articles in General Music Today, Music Educators Journal and Update: Applications of Research

in Music Education. She is the recipient of the 2017 Keene State College Excellence in Teaching

Award and the 2017 Keene State College Excellence in Performance Award.

Session Title: Student teaching: what you need to teach yourself. Session Description: Preparing for the student teaching experience may feel like a daunting task: it doesn’t need to be! This session highlights strategies that develop positive approaches

and foundations for a successful student teaching/internship experience and subsequent career.

Presenter Biography: Mark Zielinski currently serves as Senior Lecturer of Music Education at the University of New

Hampshire where he supervises student teachers and teaches undergraduate courses in music

education. He has taught music in the public schools at the middle and high school levels in

Indiana, Georgia and Maryland. While in Maryland, he served as a board member of the

Maryland Music Educators Association and Chairperson of the Music Department at Hereford

High School. A native of Indiana, Mark received a Bachelor of Music Education and Performers

Certificate from Indiana University as well as a Master of Music in Trumpet, with a cognate field

in Wind Conducting from the same institution.

Session Title: An Introduction to Popular Music Education and Modern Band

Session Description: Modern band – culturally relevant music of students taught through approximation, music

acquisition theory, and social equity. As an introductory session, the modern band teaser gets

teachers excited about what it means to learn the methodology, justification, and means to run a

modern band program.

Presenter Biography: Dr. Zellner joined Little Kids Rock as the National Program Director in 2012. From 1998­2012,

Dr. Zellner had served as Director of Instrumental Activities at Tunkhannock Area High School,

where he was responsible for the marching, concert, jazz, and percussion ensembles. He graduated from Moravian College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Music degree with emphasis in Education. He then went on to receive his master’s degree in music from the University of Connecticut. At UCONN, he was assistant director of the 275 member marching band, directed the women’s basketball pep band and concert band. In April 2011, Dr. Zellner received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Capella University.

Session Title: Building Resilience: LGBTQ+ Inclusive Music Classrooms Session Description: Our session will include a presentation from GLSEN NH about inclusion of LGBTQ+ youth in the music classroom. In addition to this informative clinic, there will be time for questions and answers, as well as input from students about their experiences as LGBTQ+ students in music programs. Presenter Biography: At GLSEN, we want every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. We believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow. We accomplish our goals by working in hallways across the country ­­ from Congress and the Department of Education to schools and district offices in your community ­­ to improve school climate and champion LGBT issues in K­12 education.

Session Title: Engaging the Ensemble: Real­World Examples to Help Students Create Meaningful Music­Making Session Description: Current research and real­world examples of how to engage instrumental music students in deeper content connections will be shared. Strategies for asking questions and the types of questions that can be used in rehearsals will be shared. Connections will also be made to teacher evaluation and the new music standards. Presenter Biography: Jenny L. Neff teaches instrumental music at Bala Cynwyd Middle School in the Lower Merion School District (Pennsylvania). She serves as the Eastern Division Representative for NAfME’s

Council for Band and has served in roles of advocacy and professional development for PMEA

districts. She has presented sessions on a variety of topics, including: music standards,

curriculum, advocacy, instructional strategies, engaging students, embracing change, and teacher

evaluation. She has written articles for state journals and guest blog posts. Dr. Neff holds a

Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Immaculata University, and Bachelor’s and Master’s

degrees in Music Education from Michigan State University.

Session Title: Improve Your Marching Band Rehearsal Efficiency

Session Description: Whether you are the only one working with your band or have a team of dozens, make the most

of your limited rehearsal time with these ideas. Streamline attendance, musical and visual

warmup, and field rehearsal. Materials will be available for your use and get tips on creating

your own.

Presenter Biography: Casey Goodwin is a senior lecturer and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of New

Hampshire where she teaches undergraduate courses in the areas of conducting and music

education and directs the Wildcat Marching Band, Concert Band, and Beast of the East Pep

Band. Additionally, she is a faculty member and assistant coordinator of the Summer Youth

Music School (SYMS). Prior to her appointment at UNH, Goodwin was the Director of

Instrumental Music at Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Maine. She currently serves

as a director on the board of the New Hampshire Music Educators Association.

Session Title: Preparing Singers For The NH All­State Jazz Audition Session Description: The composer of the NH All­State Jazz Vocal audition etudes will be here to help educators prepare students for the audition. Suggestions will include advice on

conquering the etude, vocal improvisation and singing the jazz ballad. Educators will depart

knowing how to effectively prepare their students for the vocal audition.

Presenter Biography: Chris Humphrey is no stranger to the NH Music Educators Association. Having taught at UNH

in Durham for 8 years, Massachusetts, and now Maine for the last 20 years, he has still been

involved with music in NH. A regular performer in the NE jazz scene, he is an active vocalist

and jazz pianist. He has composed the last 3 vocal jazz auditions for NH and will complete the

cycle with his final blues next year. He currently teaches at Cheverus High School, the Jesuit

college prep school of Maine, in Portland. He is a graduate of Merrimack High School (1983)

and he and his wife Jennifer (Manchester West ’89) have two kids and live in Kennebunk,

Maine.

Session Title: After Conversational Solfege, Meet at the Audiation Station!

Session Description: Demonstration of next steps in developing audiation skills for students by using the website assistance at The Audiation Station. K­8 students will demonstrate their

progress.

Presenter Biography: Mark DeTurk is Professor of Music Education at the University of New Hampshire and has been

providing and modeling audiation­based teaching for many years.

Donna Park is an experienced music teacher at Northwest Elementary School in Manchester,

NH. She enjoys demonstrating the music skills her students have developed through audiation

skill building.

Session Description: Inheriting an established program can be tough, even for seasoned educators. How you handle those first years in a new position and the relationships you build can

have a long lasting effect on your program. Established teachers are welcome to come and share

Presenter Biography: Ken Martin is the Director of Instrument Music at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, NH

where he oversees the band, jazz band, marching band, guitar ensemble and strings programs.

Before moving to Hampton, Ken taught elementary and middle school general music as well as

band, jazz band and beginning band in the Goffstown School District in Goffstown, NH where

he also currently has an active private saxophone lessons studio. Ken lives in Merrimack, NH

with his wife, son and dog, Percy Aldridge Martin.

Session Title: Building the Citizen Musician

Session Description: Scott Graves engages the audience in lively discussion highlighting concrete tools music

educators will use to disarm and rebuild their students’ capabilities to de­politicize their thought

process, assess and define their place in society and build an empowered place for themselves in

our society. Key points will include:

• De­politicizing it all

• Exercising empathy in students

• Improve problem solving through music

• Building and leveraging social capital

• Communicating in the 21st Century

• When Enough is Enough

Group Discussion during presentation will be encouraged. This presentation is important for

educators at all levels, entrepreneurs, vendors and the intellectually curious concerned for how

our current political climate has affected our next generation.

Scott Graves is Founder and CEO of Derry­based Smash Music Enterprises, the culmination of 25 years as a professional in the music and entertainment industry. As a performing artist Scott enjoyed a 17 year career performing in many commercial settings while maintaining a private studio of 75­80 students. He has taught ensemble and classroom courses at the middle, high school and collegiate levels. He is a successful entrepreneur, recognized as a leader in business and creative expression. Scott currently sits on the Derry Economic Development Action Committee. His team has developed a shared space environment for creative class entrepreneurs, the first of its kind for New Hampshire.
