What is the SolidWorks Data Migration tool
• The SolidWorks Data Migration tool translates SolidWorks parts, assemblies,
and drawing files to Solid Edge.
• This tool uses the SolidWorks Automation layer to extract rich
attributes\properties from the SW file
• These Attributes from SW are stored in the Siemens xml format “PLMXML”
• The PLMXML format references geometry stored in the Parasolid x_t file

Requirements to Use this Tool:
• Solid Edge Premium, Classic, or Foundation
• Solid Edge ST9 (Required to support Associative Drawing files)
• Licensed Copy of SolidWorks version 2012 or greater
• Both applications must be installed on the same machine (New
Requirement)
• Highly suggested for ST9
• Required in ST10
• SolidWorks files to be migrated can exist on a share or on the
local machine
• SW application must be able to resolve all links (Assemblies, and
or Drawings)
• Migration tool supports both Ordered and Synchronous
environments (Synchronous environment is used for best
results).

• SolidWorks host – Name of the machine where SW is
Installed (Goes away in ST10)
• SolidWorks working folder – Folder where the SW files
exist. (Must have Read and Write access)
• Solid Edge folders (Target location for the resulting
Solid Edge files
• Template files – Defaults to the delivered Solid Edge
template files
• Configuration file – Contains the options, and setting
seen on this page
• Log file location
• This is the location of the log file for the Solid Edge
transactions.
• Additional log file is also created in the “SolidWorks
working” folder for the SW transactions

Supported features page 1 of 3
• Supported Features:
• Material definition – maintains the material definition found in
SolidWorks file. Conversion of the “SolidWorks
materials.sldmat” to a Solid Edge materials.mtl file is required.
(Use SWmat2SEMat.exe" in the SE program folder)
• Hole definitions - SolidWorks hole attribute are apply to Solid
Edge hole features including thread size and pitch. This feature
requires a conversion of the SolidWorks hole database
(SWBrowser.mdb) to a Solid Edge hole table. (Use
SEHolePipeTxtFromSW.exe found in the SE program folder)

• Assembly relationships:
• Family of Assemblies - All SolidWorks configurations that include
suppressed parts are migrated to Solid Edge as FOA Member.
• Alternate or Flexible Assemblies - Alternate Position Assemblies will be
migrated to Solid Edge as an FOA Member.

Supported Features Page 3 of 3
Associative drawing files - During the migration process a link is
established between the SE Draft, and part or assembly file.
• All SW drawing view types are supported.
• Cutting plane lines, auxiliary view plane lines, and detail
envelopes are supported.
• Dimensions migrated from SolidWorks are bound to
Solid Edge drawing view geometry.
• Center marks and center lines are associative to the Solid Edge
drawing views.
• Hatch and solid fills are migrated maintaining their
associativity to the Solid Edge drawing view.
• View shading is maintained as part of this drawing view
creation process.
• Multi-sheet drawings are supported through this migration
process.
