FROM MY HEART TO YOURS
This Wednesday, February 26, is Ash Wednesday which initiates all of us into the “Lenten mode.” I invite my St.
Patrick’s parish family to participate in one of the services. Please find the times on another page of the bulletin.
In the Lenten booklet, “A Season for Goodness’ Sake,” Jerry Welte sums up the essential message for the weeks
that precede Easter. “One of the most familiar instructions of parents to children is the heartfelt exhortation to ‘good
behavior.’ When parents leave children with a sitter or grandparents, their parting words include expressions of love and a
fervent reminder: ‘Be good!’ Teachers leaving a class with a substitute provide detailed lesson plans, including tips about
special needs or abilities of students. During Lent we reflect on the gospel and listen attentively to the Lord’s ‘lesson plans’
at the Last Supper. We are given due cautions, parting verbiage, no fighting!” At the Ascension, Jesus does not chide the
disciples for their desertion at the cross. But bids them to spread the good news. His final words were not parting shots, but
inspiration: ‘Behold, I am with you always!’ Wise parents and teachers do not bid children to focus on failures in their
absence, but on exhibiting their best behavior. Lent is not a time to dwell on our sins, but a season to refine our virtues as a
springboard to greater goodness and faithful service while the Lord is away.”
I think our parish conducts the most Retreats during Lent within our pastoral neighborhood. I urge all my brothers
and sisters to attend at least one of the “renewal opportunities” offered at our Parish in March during Lent. Please see the
details of all retreats in this bulletin. I also invite you to the Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent starting on
February 28.
Remember we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on the First Friday of March (the 6
th
) after 8:30am Mass
until 7pm in the Church and thereafter in the Chapel until Saturday 8am. Please set apart an hour to spend in silent prayer
before Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who will surely enjoy your company.
Fr. Justin Huber writes in “The Priest” magazine (February 2020): “The journey of Lent begins in the desert – in
the land that St. Augustine called the ‘region of dissimilitude’ (contrast). It is a season that invites us to summon the
courage to look into the wilderness of our souls and confront the ways in which we are ‘unlike God.’ In incarnation, Christ
takes on our humanity and ventures into the wilderness in order to find us and lead us back to our proper home.”
All the retreats in March offer the Sacrament of Confession. There will be four priests at every retreat to assist us.
Going to confession during Lent will be the most fruitful, helping us toward a fresh start. I am delighted to see the brothers
and sisters of our parish who have attended the Welcome Retreat, go to confession. The Sunday before Christmas, ten men
wanted to go to confession right after the 8.30am Mass. That was a busy morning, yet I and Fr. John Christ heard their
confessions and finished before the 10.30am Mass. I thanked the Lord for their sincerity and for giving me the opportunity
to be at this spiritually growing parish. I still remember the joy on their faces!
Mathew Kelly in his book, “Rediscover Catholicism” (pp. 142-145), says, “The journey towards the best-version-of
-oneself is a journey away from the defects of the present-version-of-yourself….I am a sinner and I need to be saved. I need
to be saved from myself and from my sins. There are many people who love me deeply – parents, siblings, friends, col-
leagues, and neighbors – but they cannot save me. I need a savior. It is the clarity of this realization that is life changing…..
Your weaknesses are the key to the unimaginable bigger future that God has envisioned for you. Your strengths probably
already bearing all the fruit they can. They will continue to bear those good fruits in your life….Your richer, more abundant
future is intimately linked to your weaknesses….People striving to excel in any area of life want to know their weaknesses
so they can work to overcome them. This striving for excellence is precisely what needs to be re-ignited in Catholics today.
Confession is the perfect spiritual practice to rekindle our passion for excellence in the spiritual life…. I come to this
sacrament to reconcile with myself, with God, and with the community. Confession is not just a cleansing experience; it is
also a strengthening experience. Confession is an opportunity for you and God to work together to form a better-version-of-
yourself. It also increases our desire for holiness, and that is a desire we should fan with all our energy.”
Let us take Lent seriously as the best opportunity to find true happiness and joy in our busy lives. I look forward
very much to join you all and become the best-version-of-myself through the “100 Days of Grace” (Feb 26 – May 31), from
Ash Wednesday to the Feast of Pentecost.
Stay tuned to the Holy Spirit
May God bless the whole world!
