DESCRIPTION

Go to http://sewspoiled.blogspot.com/2015/02/sew-spoiled-kenna-tote-pattern-free.html to download the full size templates. The Kenna Tote is a medium size tote perfect to use for business, school and/or motherhood. The tall exterior pockets on either side of the tote give easy access to all you need to hold close. As well as the large storage space inside for all of your things. The exterior is made from duck canvas and the interior is from lightweight cotton in the sample above. The Kenna Tote sewing pattern shows you how to create a zipper pocket, a slip pocket, make straps and how to install a magnet clasp.

  • Step Two

    2

Fuse the fabric panels to the coordinating inter-facing pieces.

Pin the two Fabric A, Side Panels together and sew .5" seam allowance along the diagonal side.

Repeat for the opposite side of the bag. Press seam open with an iron.

    Step Three

  • Step Four

    3

To make the exterior elastic pockets pin one Fabric A elastic pocket to another Fabric B elas-tic pocket panel right sides together and sew across the 15 edge using a .5" seam allow-ance.

Fold and iron the pocket to the right side out. Sew 5/8" seam allowance from the sewn edge. This will create a casing for the elastic.

Finish the bottom raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger. Feed the elastic through the casing at the top with a safety pin.

Pin the elastic on either side of the casing. Set aside and repeat this step for the second pocket.

  • Or Step Four

    4

ORTo make the exterior elastic pockets iron a .25 up along the 15 side of a Fabric B binding strip measuring 2 X 15. This strip becomes the top binding and casing for the elastic. Pin one Fab-ric A pocket to a Fabric B strip measuring 2 X 15 along the 15 side and sew across the top of the pocket using a .25 seam allowance.

Press the binding and fold over the seam. Pin and topstitch the binding. This will create a cas-ing for the 10.5 elastic.

Finish the bottom raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger. Feed the elastic through the casing with a safety pin.

Pin the elastic on either side of the casing and baste stitch the elastic so it will not move. Set aside and repeat this step for the second pocket.

  • Step Five

    5

Mark 1 from corner seam with chalk. Place the pocket upside down 1" along the bottom of the side panel.

Sew a .5" seam allowance along the pocket.

Fold the pocket right side up and pin the elastic to the side of the raw edges. There should be .5 of fabric at the corner edge.

Baste stitch the elastic to the raw edges and at the center. Trim any excess pocket fabric. Repeat step 5 for the opposite side.

    .5

  • Step Six

    6

Place the center panel (B) over the side panel (A) with the elastic pocket sandwiched be-tween, right sides together.

Sew using a .5" seam allowance.

This is what is looks like when finished with the first panel.

Repeat for the opposite side of bag.

Tip: If you want to embroider the center panel, this is a good time to do so. On this Kenna Tote I embroidered the Zinnia Redwork from Meringue Designs, http://meringuedesigns.net/zinnia-redwork.

  • Step Seven

    7

With the bag inside out pin the bottom of the bag together.

Sew across the bottom edge using a .5 seam allowance.

Pinch the corners together, pin and sew .5" seam allowance across the corner.Repeat for the opposite side. Set aside.

    Step Eight

  • Step Nine

    8

Add the pockets to the lining using the place-ment lines on the template. See Pocket Appen-dixes.

Pin the two lining panels right sides together. Sew a .5 seam allowance down the sides of the bag. Leave a 4 hole along one side of the lining to flip the bag later.

Pin the bottom of the bag together. Sew across the bottom edge using a .5 seam allowance.

    Step Ten

    4 Opening

  • Step Eleven

    9

Add the magnet clasp. See Magnet Clasp Ap-pendix for more information.

Pinch the corners together, pin and sew .5" seam allowance across the corner.Repeat for the opposite side.

Pin the 12 webbing on one side of the main panel. Repeat for opposite side.(If you want to make your own straps go to the Strap Appendix.)

    Step Twelve

    Step Thirteen

  • Step Fourteen

    10

Place the lining, right sides together over the outer shell, pin along the top of the bag. Sand-wiching the 12 webbing, down between the top of the outer shell and lining pieces. Repeat on the opposite side of the tote.

Sew around the top of the bag using a .5 seam allowance. On each side of the tote leave one top open for the strap to be threaded through. Stop .5 below the strap opening, this is where the webbing will slip through.

Trim the excess and clip the curves of the top of the bag. Turn the bag right side out through the 4 opening in the lining.

    Strap Side Open

    Step Fifteen

  • Step Sixteen

    11

Flip the bag right side out.

Iron the bag, and poke the corners out so it will lay flat. Turn the top where the webbing will go, in .5 and iron.

Place the webbing strap inside the top of the bag and pin. Repeat for opposite side of bag.

Topstitch the entire top of the bag.

  • Step Seventeen

    12

Pull the lining out o the bag and pin the lining hole closed.

Sew as close to the edge as possible to close the opening in the lining.

Turn the bag right side out and you are done!

  • Slip Pocket Appendix

    13

A.) Start by folding the 7X 14 fabric in half right sides together. Now it should measure 7X 7.B.) Sew around the edges .5, leaving a 3 hole along one edge. Trim the corners of excess fab-ric.

C.) Turn the pocket right side out and iron flat.

D.) Place on the pocket on the lining using the template slip pocket guidelines and pin.

E.) Sew around the slip pocket, closing the 3 hole.

    Return to Step 10.

  • Zipper Pocket Appendix

    14

A.) Start by drawing a .5 X 5 rectangular box a .5 from the top of the zipper pocket fabric and 1 away from the edge of the fabric. B.) Pin the zipper pocket fabric to one of the lin-ing panels right sides together. Therectangle needs to be centered and approxi-mately 3 from the top of the lining panel. Use Template C as a guideline for the placement of the zipper pocket.C.) Sew around the rectangle box. Cut a center line .25 from the sides within the rectangle. Then cut the .25 Y shape on each end of the rectangle.

D.) Push the pocket through the opening you just made and iron the pocket flat.

E.) Place the zipper in the open rectangle hole and pin.

  • Continued Zipper Pocket Appendix

    15

F.) Attach your zipper foot to your machine

Sew .25 seam allowance around the zipper.

G.) Finally, fold the pocket in half right side to-gether and stitch around the three open sides of the pocket. Make sure you are not sewing the lining.

    Return to step 10.

  • Magnet Clasp Appendix

    16

There is a Magnet Clasp Tutorial Video here.A.) Use the lining template for the magnet clasp placement. You should place a mark for the clasp 1.5 for the top, center of the lining.

B.) Cut small holes on the marks using a seam riper.

C.) Take the 2 X 1 interfacing and fold it in half so it is 1 X 1, place the metal plate on the folded interfacing and draw the straight lines onto the interfacing.D.) Cut the interfacing through both layers.

E.) Now you push the tabs of the clasp through the holes of the fabric right side facing. On the backside place the interfacing over the tabs ofthe clasp.

  • Magnet Clasp Appendix

    17

F.) Finally place the metal plate over the tabs of the clasp. Fold the tabs over the center of the plate. Return to Step 12.

    A.) Fuse two 6 X 12 interfacing pieces to the 6 X 12 Fabric B pieces.

B.) Fold in half and iron to crease the fabric.

    Strap Appendix

  • Strap Appendix
