Rationale• Intheresearchandworkrelatedtosuicidepreventiontherehasbeena

tendencytofocusonhopelessness.Hopelessnesshasbeenshowntopredictsuicide,butveryfewhavestudieditsopposite,i.e.theimportanceofhope.Hopeshouldbeconsideredasacentralconceptwhenworkingwithpreventivemeasures.

• Weshouldlooktostrengthenpeople’shope.Thiscouldbedonebygivingpeopleasenseofagencytohandletheirownlife.Inthisprocessitiscentraltolookathowindividualsperceivepossiblegoalsandpotentialpathwaystothesegoals.Ifyoudonotknowhowtopursueyourgoals,itmightleadtodespair.

Sowhatisit?• Hopeisdefinedas goal-directedthinking inwhichthepersonhastheperceivedcapacitytofindroutestogoals(pathwaysthinking),andthemotivationtousethoseroutes(agencythinking).

theriskfactorsofsuicide,indicatethathopelessnessisaprimarypredictorofsuicide.Hopelessnessisassociatedwithsuicideattempts,althoughthefactormaybeconfoundedbythepresenceofdepression(Wilkinsonetal,2010)
