DEAR MUSIC LOVERS
Welcome to the SFJAZZ Center where our 6th Season is underway. We conceived the Center as a community gathering place for artists and audiences to come together in an environment that encourages engagement and dialogue—musician to musician, audience member to audience member, and musician to audience. When that connection occurs we can be witness to something that moves us, something that makes us feel better for the experience—what I've heard described as a “transcendent moment.”
Since we opened the Center in January 2013, we have been fortunate to experience a number of those indelible moments. This season presents many such opportunities, and many where SFJAZZ is the only place to see them.
The start of November marks the end of an era, as we present the final Bay Area shows by the Bad Plus with founding pianist Ethan Iverson (11/2–5), while pianist Benny Green leads his trio in the Joe Henderson Lab (11/2–5). The final band led by the guitar legend Paco de Lucía pays tribute to the late flamenco genius (at Herbst Theatre, 11/8), and later in the month, pianist Hiromi performs solo and in duo with Columbian harpist Edmar Castañeda (11/16–19). Thanksgiving weekend brings 14-year-old piano wunderkind Joey Alexander with an all-star trio of Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland (11/24–26), and we close the month with the great Dianne Reeves in a program of holiday music (11/30–12/3).
The transition to December is packed with terrific vocalists, including four nights in the Joe Henderson Lab with Tessa Souter (11/30), Destani Wolf (12/1), and Jacqui Naylor (12/2–3), followed by the amazing Kurt Elling in a holiday show with The Swingles (12/7). Next we have two nights with 2017 GRAMMY-winner Gregory Porter, highlighting his new project devoted to the music of Nat “King” Cole (12/8–10).
Mid-December showcases holiday music, featuring dance floor celebrations with Pink Martini (12/14–17), and Vince Guaraldi’s timeless soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas performed by pianist Adam Shulman’s trio (12/14–17). We wrap up the year with the funky saxophone of Maceo Parker, featuring Bay Area blues legend Sugar Pie DeSanto as a special guest (12/28–31).
See you at the Center, and I look forward to the deeper dialogue with you all,
Randall Kline SFJAZZ Founder & Executive Artistic Director
P.S. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to SFJAZZ Members, whose ranks have more than quadrupled since groundbreaking—from 3,000 to over 14,000—and your annual support of our commitment to providing the best musical and educational experiences. You are the fans that keep SFJAZZ vibrant, and inspire us to seek out opportunities for, what noted jazz writer Whitney Balliett called “the sound of surprise.”

DEAR SFJAZZ PATRON
Thank you for coming out for the SFJAZZ experience!
SFJAZZ has become well-known not only to the Bay Area community as the place for jazz; it is has become known throughout the artistic community as the place to perform, and we could not be happier. As you read through the program book (take it home) you will see familiar names presented in new settings and new names we are confident will meet the standard you expect.
But there’s work to be done while we celebrate the art form of jazz.
It’s not easy to stand for the freedom of expression, but jazz does. And it matters so much, especially now. We believe that jazz serves as a foundation for a better society, because it models the values of active improvisation, joyful collaboration, and community connection. But as we see today, with threatened budget cuts to the arts, we are actively seeking new communication and funding channels. Your support has the power to advocate for stronger, more diverse, better educated communities that are an essential declaration of our humanity.
An example of that sentiment happened just a few weeks ago when SFJAZZ announced a broad expansion of its work in Oakland and San Francisco classrooms. You can read all about it on sfjazz.org, but essentially we are bringing jazz and jazz education to every public middle school student in Oakland and San Francisco. While this will potentially create a phenomenal increase of Bay Area jazz devotees in the future (!), it is also an expression of our belief that the skills taught by jazz are relevant and meaningful to our kids as future community leaders.
When you receive emails and letters asking for support, we hope you’ll see the faces of not only the great musicians you experience at the Center, but also the faces of tomorrow’s leaders, and know that jazz education had a part in developing the skills for success inside and outside of the art form.
Gratefully yours,
Donald W. Derheim SFJAZZ Chief Executive Officer

CHRISTIAN McBRIDE | OCT 5–8Five-time GRAMMY-winning bassist Christian McBride is widely regarded as the standard-bearer for jazz bassists in the 21st century and is among the most recorded artists of his generation. Among the more than 300 albums on which he’s appeared are sessions by many of the most illustrious figures in jazz, including Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson and Pat Metheny, while also collaborating with artists as diverse as Kathleen Battle, Sting and Questlove of The Roots. McBride has been the linchpin of various all-star projects, such as the Five Peace Band with John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett and Vinnie Colaiuta, as well as the 2015 GRAMMY-lauded Chick Corea Trio with drummer Brian Blade. He’s led a procession of diverse groups in the studio and on tour since the mid-90s, most recently his hard-swinging Inside Straight quintet featuring SFJAZZ Collective vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and the Christian McBride Big Band, whose 2011 release The Good Feeling won that year’s GRAMMY for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, McBride brings a kaleidoscopic musical vision and a restless drive for fresh avenues of expression.
VIJAY IYER | JAN 18–21The brilliant and adventurous pianist and composer Vijay Iyer is a musician who stretches the boundaries of jazz, but has long reached beyond jazz’s vocabulary. An artist possessed of a relentlessly searching intellect and formidable technique, he was the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation’s “genius grant” in 2013 and the “quadruple crown” in DownBeat’s 2012 Critics Poll in the categories of Pianist of the Year, Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and Jazz Artist of the Year (the last two also awarded in 2015). Iyer has collaborated with the most creative figures in modern jazz, including Steve Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, Ambrose Akinmusire, and John Zorn, among others, and is a Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts at Harvard University. He has recorded 15 albums since his debut in 1995, including the acclaimed sessions Historicity (2009), Accelerando (2011), and Break Stuff (2014) featuring his telepathic trio of bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Iyer’s role as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director allows him to explore his creativity in various settings, from piano duet to sextet.
The SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director program was established to give today’s most innovative and influential musicians the chance to curate exclusive programming at the SFJAZZ Center, often featuring unprecedented collaborations between world–renowned artists.

MARY STALLINGS | MAR 29–APR 1A supremely soulful jazz singer, San Francisco native Mary Stallings has appeared alongside jazz greats including Cal Tjader, Dizzy Gillespie and the Count Basie Orchestra over her stellar career. With her supple sense of swing, blues-inflected phrasing, and gift for empathic interpretation, it’s easy to see why The New York Times declared her “perhaps the best jazz singer alive today.” Following tours with Gillespie, Basie and Billy Eckstine in the late 60s and early 70s, she effectively retired from music to raise her daughter, but made a triumphant return in the 1990s with a series of superb releases accompanied by piano master Gene Harris’ quartet. Since her return to music, she has since made up for lost time, recording a dozen sessions for Concord, MAXJAZZ and High Note, culminating in her latest High Note album, Feelin’ Good. Stallings has a long history with SFJAZZ, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at our 2011 Gala and performing the opening song during the historic Opening Night concert in 2013. Her week as Resident Artistic Director includes collaboration with Russell Malone, the Bill Charlap Trio, and the SFJAZZ Collective.
ROSANNE CASH | MAY 3–6More than a country music icon, Rosanne Cash is America’s foremost musical woman of letters, a singularly literate artist whose poignant vocals turn every song into a revelatory tale. Her career hit a milestone with the 2009 release of The List, an album distilled from a list of 100 essential country songs given to her at 18 by her father, the legendary Johnny Cash. Cash has landed nearly a dozen #1 country hit singles while earning 13 GRAMMY nominations, culminating in three GRAMMY wins for her latest Blue Note release, The River & The Thread. The album made the “Best of Year” lists in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Village Voice, Huffington Post, and USA Today. Cash’s creativity isn’t confined to the bandstand. Leading publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Oxford-American and New York Magazine have published her essays, columns and fiction. She’s also generated an acclaimed volume of short stories, Bodies of Water, and a fascinating memoir, Composed. Her week as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director is an exclusive tribute to her father with guitarist and producer Ry Cooder.
Every two years, SFJAZZ selects a new group of forward–thinking musicians to participate in the program. Past SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors include Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Miguel Zenón, Regina Carter, John Santos, Esperanza Spalding, Terence
Blanchard, Zakir Hussain, and Eric Harland. Notable world premieres have included pianist Moran’s pairing of jazz and
live skateboarding, guitarist Bill Frisell’s adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved featuring actor Tim Robbins, drummer Harland’s Voyager band paired with live video gamers, and an extensively revised presentation of trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s fully–staged opera Champion: An Opera in Jazz.

He is the singer of the hour, with a voice that dips and swoops and cries, always reaching back to the gospel and blues of his youth.
Maybe you’ve observed the way he stands on stage —an ex–linebacker, an amiable bear of a man —and eases into his set, moving through one after another of those deeply personal songs he composes about the irrepressible strength of love. He is preaching, really, and it doesn’t take long before the audience begins to shout back at him—something that rarely happens these days at a jazz concert. Or the crowd will sit so quietly that you can hear the silence, because his listeners are touched by the undeniable power of Porter. He learned to sing in the “dusty-board churches” of Bakersfield, Ca., where his late mother, Ruth, was pastor of a storefront mission that backed onto an alley. The family—Gregory, his seven brothers and sisters, and their mother—would pray for hours on end. “And of course prayer in the black church is not only a matter of `Our Father, who art in heaven,’” he explains.
“Because you’re on your knees and you’re making these noises—it’s like moaning and wailing and praying in song,” he says, and demonstrates, his voice rising to a sanctified moan.
“And it’s very musical, and absolutely that comes into my music, into a lot of the intervals and in–between–spaces of my music. It is the essence of who I am.”
You will experience that essence at SFJAZZ when Porter and his band perform four shows (Dec. 8–10) to close out a lengthy stretch of programs devoted to the art of song—featuring such other leading vocalists of the day as Dianne Reeves (Nov. 30–Dec. 3) and Kurt Elling (Dec. 7). Porter will explore the songbook he’s been developing ever since Water, his debut album, was released in 2010. It alerted the jazz world to this late bloomer, now 46, whose autobiographical songs speak of bittersweet romances, along with memories of his mother and the music of his childhood—Mahalia Jackson, the Mississippi Mass Choir and, notably, Nat King Cole. He may sing about racism and resistance: “1960 What?” directly evokes Detroit in 1967, but might as well be about Ferguson in 2014. That song—hell, all his songs—have a way of connecting to listeners regardless of whether they self–identify as jazz fans; Porter is about the big beat, hand–clapping grooves. He manages to reference an entire tradition, from Joe Williams to Marvin Gaye and the political appeals of Gil Scott–Heron. Eschewing slick productions—Donny Hathaway’s “Live” is his favorite album—he strives, as people used to say, to “keep it real,” which may explain why the songs on his GRAMMY–winning Liquid Soul have been streamed upwards of 100 million times.
Or it may be because Porter is such an effective storyteller. Take Me to the Alley—which won the GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album this year—recalls the alley behind his mother’s

church. It was Skid Row, where she brought her ministry to the homeless and afflicted.
Likewise, Porter’s new Nat “King” Cole & Me—on which he sings many of Cole’s hits—derives from personal experience. It turns out that Nat Cole’s music has been a marker in Porter’s life, going back to age five when Gregory composed a little song and sang it to his mother.
He croons it now:
“Once upon a time, I had a dreamboat.
Once upon a time, I had a love.”
His mother told him, “Boy, you sound like Nat King Cole,” which aroused his curiosity and sent him to her record collection. There he found a bunch of Cole’s LPs, including a Christmas album with a photo of the singer sitting in front of a cozy fireplace, the very picture of what a father could be: dapper, kind, content with domestic life. Porter—abandoned by his own father—started listing to Cole’s records and the words he sang: “Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.” Or this, from “Nature Boy”: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
Strange as it seems—and he acknowledges the unlikelihood of it all—Porter began to think of Cole as a surrogate father who sent him comforting messages via song: “You may be sick and tired, but you be a man, my son.” Over the years, Nat King Cole’s music served as both medicine and therapy for Gregory Porter. When he was suffering through a shoulder

injury at San Diego State University—it ended his football dreams and pushed him toward music—he turned to Cole for nurturing. A decade or so later, when he was in his early 30s, living in Brooklyn and waiting for his big break, Porter actually composed a musical titled Nat “King” Cole and Me.
Now with the new album, he turns to Cole yet again and sings those songs—to his own son, four year–old Demyan.
“It’s a funny thing,” he says. “When you have children, you start thinking about death: `What am I going to leave them when I’m gone?’ And I like to think about Demyan playing this record when I’m no longer here. He’ll have `Pick Yourself Up’—which was my message from Nat; I thought it was specifically for me. But now there is some messaging to my own son, without question.”
Perhaps inevitably for Porter, all that thinking about Nat King Cole, his imagined father, has put him on a journey to understand his real biological father, the late Rufus Porter. A fleeting presence during Porter’s childhood, Rufus was a preacher, a visual artist and “a little bit of a poet.”
He made his living as a house painter and Porter occasionally would get to see him working at the top of a ladder. He would look up at his daddy whose face was sprinkled with paint:
“And maybe he would come down off the ladder and maybe he would give me a few dollars, or maybe he’d stay up on the ladder and, if I were lucky, I’d be spattered with paint, too. It’s a strange thing, what I was feeling: ‘Gimme some of that splatter,’” he says with a rueful laugh.
And yes, he is writing a song about his father: “A Man on a Ladder.”
While his mother remains his hero, Porter recognizes that his creative genes may have come from his father. “And that’s how I reconcile his having left—his having nothing to do with me. I’ve come to see that everything I do now is probably directly connected to him. At his funeral, I learned he had great charisma, a great singing voice—many of the things I have, come from him. So he may have given me something that’s feeding my family right now.”
With his family—wife Victoria and Demyan—Porter moved back to Bakersfield in 2015. His brothers and sisters are there, and it feels like his mother is still there. He needs to keep drawing on that essence of who he is, he says, because he is after something more than commercial success: “I’m trying to bring about some kind of love and mutual respect. I do feel some parts of my music, the timbre of my voice—it brings a certain soulfulness and healing to people. And I only say that because people tell me it’s so. They don’t say, `Man, I like your glittery pants.’ They say, ‘There’s an emotion and a spirit there.’ And that’s the way I always have received the music myself. When I first started listening to jazz, I understood the feeling. I would listen to the great saxophone players, and I would hear the voices of my grandmother, my mother and my grandfather, stylistically. There’s no getting away from the importance of this gospel–blues that finds its way into jazz music. It’s in the root.” g
