DEAR FRIENDS OF SFJAZZ

In the coming months we close out our

3rd Season here at the SFJAZZ Center.

Since we opened our doors on January

23, 2013—Martin Luther King Day—we

have continued to grow! The members

of SFJAZZ have grown from 3,000 at

groundbreaking to over 11,000. SFJAZZ

Members support the artistic and education programs here at the Center and are our

most engaged patrons. They truly are the heart of the SFJAZZ community.

Among the highlights in these final months are a number of musicians from around the

world—German cabaret stars Max Raabe and Palast Orchester (4/3 at Davies Symphony

Hall), Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil (4/16 at Davies Symphony Hall), and Ukraine’s

avant/folk group DakhaBrakha (4/16).

The international focus continues with performance by our SFJAZZ Resident Artistic

Directors. Our Resident Artistic Director (RAD) program is unique to SFJAZZ. Every

two years we select four artists to each curate a week (Thursday through Sunday) of

performances. Often these shows include premieres and rarely performed works or

ensembles. March opens with RAD Zakir Hussain presenting a San Francisco premiere

and world premiere, respectively. In Celtic Connections (4/2 & 3), he combines a group

of master Indian musicians with a group of master Celtic musicians. He teams up with

Beninese jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke (4/4 & 5), connecting India, West Africa and jazz.

RADs Terence Blanchard and Esperanza Spalding are featuring new work as well as

significant past work. Blanchard joins—in a premiere—with his former teacher, piano great

Kenny Barron and his former student, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire (4/9). His new

electric band Terence Blanchard E-Collective makes their West Coast debut (4/10).

A Tale of God’s Will (4/11 & 12) is Blanchard’s GRAMMY-winning interpretation of the

devastation of Hurricane Katrina—featuring his quintet with orchestra. Spalding is

reprising her last two big projects—Chamber Music Society (4/30) and Radio Music Society (5/1) and presenting the West Coast premiere of her Emily Project (5/2 & 3).

Other highlights range from the Bay Area to Appalachia, from locals to legends in five

themed weeks. Our Poet Laureate Ishmael Reed curates a Poetry Festival (4/16–19).

Newly awarded National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Charles Lloyd offers three

different programs—the West Coast premiere of Wild Man Dance Suite (4/23 & 24),

the New Quartet which features past RAD Jason Moran (4/25), and Charles Lloyd and Friends with Bill Frisell (4/26). African-American Appalachian music is at the center

of the Carolina Chocolate Drops (4/14–17). The Bay Area’s Lavay Smith pays tribute to

four different jazz and blues vocal styles (5/21–24). And legendary performance artist/

musician Laurie Anderson explores four different jazz-related collaborations, (5/28–31).

that take advantage of the Center’s unique

characteristics—an environment that is

that our efforts to celebrate and nurture this American art form continue to meet with

E ach season, the SFJAZZ Collective convenes at the SFJAZZ Center for a multi-week residency during which

the octet prepares new repertoire and interacts with the community by leading master classes and workshops.

The SFJAZZ Collective tours nationally and records new material each season, both original compositions and fresh arrangements of classic material by jazz’s greatest masters. Their new album, The Music of Joe Henderson and Original Compositions, is available at the box office, SFJAZZ.org and iTunes.

F ounded by Randall Kline in 1983 under the name Jazz in the City, SFJAZZ has become the world’s leading cultural institution

devoted to jazz and related forms of music, presenting over 300 performances each year at the new SFJAZZ Center and throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

In addition to presenting the SFJAZZ annual season, the San Francisco Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ Summer Sessions, SFJAZZ supports a vibrant local music scene with Hotplate events and their free summer concerts at Stanford Shopping Center and Levi’s Plaza, and nurtures aspiring musicians with diverse education programs and performing ensembles.

In January 2013, SFJAZZ took the most audacious step in its evolution, opening the 36,000-square-foot, $64 million SFJAZZ Center on the corner of Fell and Franklin streets in the heart of San Francisco’s cultural corridor.

The first stand-alone structure in the country built specifically for jazz, the SFJAZZ Center was designed by award-winning San Francisco architect Mark Cavagnero, who worked with acoustician

Sam Berkow and theater designer Len Auerbach to create a main performance space with the acoustic quality of a great concert hall and the relaxed intimacy of a jazz club. That’s the Robert N. Miner Auditorium, a flexible, scalable venue that seats up to 700 people in close proximity to the musicians with superb sight lines and pristine acoustics tailored for jazz performance.

The 100-seat Joe Henderson Lab is the SFJAZZ Center’s street-level performance and rehearsal space, named for the late, great saxophonist and San Francisco resident, which also serves as the nerve center for the organization’s education department. Students of all ages use the Joe Henderson Lab as well as the practice rooms and cutting edge digital lab for workshops, rehearsals, master classes and private instruction.

ZAKIR HUSSAIN MAR 30–APR 5 The scion of a legendary Hindustani percussion dynasty, Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest tabla virtuoso, a master of classical North Indian music who has collaborated with a glittering roster of international stars including Charles Lloyd, Mickey Hart and the legendary group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin and violinist L. Shankar. Bay Area audiences have been fortunate to experience Hussain’s groundbreaking creative journey up close since he settled in the region to teach at San Anselmo’s Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in 1970. As a band leader, a dogged promoter of Hindustani and South Indian Carnatic traditions, a Bollywood and Hollywood film composer, and a pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion, he has blazed a mind-boggling array of musical trails. His programming as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director showcases a cross section of his creative pursuits.

ERIC HARLAND JAN 29–FEB 1 A leading drummer on the national scene, Texas-born Eric Harland has performed with jazz legends like Betty Carter, Joe Henderson and McCoy Tyner, and has played on more than 70 recordings with such artists as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain. In DownBeat’s 65th Annual Readers Poll, he was included in the short list of top drummers, in the company of masters like Roy Haynes and the late Elvin Jones. In 2010, Harland claimed DownBeat’s top spot in the Rising Star Drummer category of the Annual Critics Poll for the third straight year. His debut recording as a leader, Voyager, Live by Night, was released in 2011, and his latest album with Voyager, Vipassana, was released this year. This four-night residency presents a wide range of his stimulating music.

TERENCE BLANCHARD APR 9–12 Trumpeter Terence Blanchard is jazz’s foremost Renaissance man. A savvy band leader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer and influential educator, the GRAMMY-winning New Orleans native is a creative force who sits at the apex of the contemporary jazz scene. After an apprenticeship with jazz legend Art Blakey, Blanchard co-led a quintet with saxophonist Donald Harrison during the height of the “young lion” era of the 1980s, releasing five acclaimed sessions before striking out on his own as a solo artist. He has composed over 40 movie scores, including soundtracks for the majority of director Spike Lee’s work, making Blanchard the most prolific jazz artist working in film. As an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, he is able to present programs that express the diversity of his vision.

ESPERANZA SPALDING APR 30–MAY 3Bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding is the most inspiring ambassador in jazz, a spellbinding talent who has brought her sleek and soulful sound to a vast international audience. Through network television appearances and command performances at the White House, she has captured a new generation’s imagination while maintaining the highest standards as an improviser. Spalding’s singular status became clearly evident with her stunning breakthrough as the first jazz musician ever to win the coveted GRAMMY Award as Best New Artist. She has worked with jazz giants including Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano, and is one third of the virtuoso ACS Trio with pianist Geri Allen and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. But it is as a band leader that she has truly made her mark, releasing a string of albums including the blockbusters Chamber Music Society and Radio Music Society.

F or an artist who considers herself a painter above anything else, Joni Mitchell has had an extraordinary impact on modern music. Often

associated with folk and rock styles, the SFJAZZ Gala 2015 honoree has had a longtime love for and affiliation with jazz, using it as a primary inspiration for her music during the mid-1970s and early 1980s and carrying that influence into all her work that followed.

Mitchell’s integration of jazz elements and use of jazz musicians began with her celebrated 1974 release Court & Spark, a GRAMMY-winning artistic and commercial triumph that was a noticeable departure from her earlier efforts, ranking at #113 in Rolling Stone’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The session is marked by a loosened sense of structure, a cover of the Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross crossover jazz hit “Twisted” (itself a re-imagined vocal version of saxophonist Wardell Gray’s jazz instrumental), and appearances by members of the jazz/fusion bands The Crusaders and the L.A. Express. Jazz was an equally profound part of the GRAMMY-

nominated 1975 album The Hissing of Summer Lawns, which contains a fresh version of trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison’s jazz standard “Centerpiece” and an appearance by saxophonist Bud Shank.

During this fertile period of experimentation, Mitchell struck up a friendship with electric bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, a hugely influential musician who had recently become a member of fusion superband Weather Report. The bassist’s presence is keenly felt on a pair of tracks on the acclaimed Summer Lawns follow-up, Hejira, with his unmistakable fretless tone providing a soaring melodic contrast to Mitchell’s exploratory vocals. Pastorius was a fully integrated collaborator on Mitchell’s

This inspired concept first took shape in 2011 during Hussain’s appearance in Glasgow with an esteemed

cast of Celtic musicians, with a triumphant reprise at the 2012 London Olympic Festival. The harmonious blend of sonorities from these disparate cultures provides a musical experience that explores common threads with sounds rarely heard together. In Zakir’s words: “I had all these preconceived ideas of what we would do and how we would make it work. But the more I think about this the more I’ve come to feel that we’re musicians. We’re the same the world over. If you put us in a room together, we’ll make music…There’s no meter that hasn’t been played, no rhythm that hasn’t been composed. It’s the musicians’ own qualities that allow them to make music different—that’s what’s exciting about this project for me. It’s fresh music sparked by the humanity of those involved.”

Loueke is easily one of the most identifiable and esteemed guitarists in jazz, best known as a member of Herbie Hancock’s working band, for his work with Terence Blanchard, and his seven acclaimed sessions as a leader. The guitarist won a coveted spot in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in 2001, when he auditioned for a panel of heavyweights including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Terence Blanchard. Blanchard featured the guitarist on his acclaimed Blue Note albums Bounce and Flow, leading to his current association with Hancock, who has showcased Loueke’s guitar work and sonorous vocals on several CDs and world tours. PLAYS SHIRLEY HORN Bay Area-based pianist, organist and vocalist Tammy Hall salutes one of the greatest jazz vocalists (and keyboardists) of all time, the late, great Shirley Horn. A supremely gifted

pianist versed in jazz, gospel, and classical music, Hall began keyboard studies at age four in her native Dallas and relocated to the Bay Area to attend Mills College. Following a two-year stay in Belgium, she returned to San Francisco in 1989 and established herself as a first-call keyboardist and accompanist, performing with artists including Houston Person, David “Fathead” Newman, Marcus Shelby, Regina Carter, Kim Nalley, Melba Moore, and Etta Jones, to name but a few. Hall is a respected educator and band leader, releasing a pair of superb albums under her name as well as a duo recording of spirituals with vocalist Valerie Joi.

For these performances, Hall pays tribute to one of her greatest influences, Shirley Horn, the masterful pianist who was also one of the finest ballad vocalists in jazz.

UKRAINIAN ROOTS Kiev’s DakhaBrakha weaves ancient Ukrainian folk melodies into a subversive musical tapestry that embraces indie rock, pop, hip hop, the avant garde, and traditional

instrumentation from around the world. With a name that translates as “give/take” in old Ukrainian, the quartet began a decade ago as the musical component of avant garde stage performances at the DAKH Theater in Kiev. DahkaBrakha has a musical approach based around unearthly vocal harmonies and thunderous percussion, augmented by floating cello and accordion sonorities. Heralded by Rolling Stone as the “Best Breakout” performers at 2014’s Bonnaroo festival, the band calls their music “ethno-chaos,” a moniker that perfectly describes their fearless appropriation of African, Asian, Arabic and Western influences in creation of their singular sound.

experimental double album, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, which reveled in spacious, improvised structures and boasted a cast of musicians including Pastorius’ Weather Report bandmates Wayne Shorter, Alex Acuña, Don Alias, and Manolo Badrena.

In the mid-70s, Mitchell came to the attention of legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus, who expressed a desire to collaborate on a new project that would set Mitchell’s voice to his inimitable compositions. The resulting album, Mingus, is a rich and evocative musical portrait that turned out to be the jazz icon’s final recording—Mingus lost his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) prior to the release of the album in 1979. Initially conceived to be an orchestral setting of T.S. Eliot’s meditational work Four Quartets, Mingus is Mitchell’s most pure jazz release, expanding Mingus’ basic melodies with an ensemble consisting of Wayne Shorter and other members of Weather Report along with pianist Herbie Hancock. Mitchell toured the world behind the Mingus release with a spectacular jazz

group that included Pastorius, guitarist Pat Metheny and saxophonist Michael Brecker—a band captured on the live 1980 release Shadows and Light.

Though Mitchell’s jazz influences would eventually be tempered by new approaches over the ensuing years, she has maintained a connection to jazz, continuing to work with a diverse range of jazz artists including saxophonist Wayne Shorter and trumpeters Kenny Wheeler, Wallace Roney and Chris Botti. In 2000, she issued Both Sides Now, an album of standards. Drummer Brian Blade, a longtime member of Wayne Shorter’s remarkable quartet and an acclaimed band leader in his own right, has worked regularly with Joni Mitchell, appearing on her Taming the Tiger (1998), Travelogue (2002) and Shine (2007) recordings and tours. He will perform with his sublime Fellowship band at the 2015 SFJAZZ Gala honoring Mitchell.

Just as she found inspiration in the freedom and spontaneity of jazz, the quality of Joni Mitchell’s timeless compositions has had an enduring impact on jazz vocalists and

instrumentalists, who have treated her songs as modern standards themselves. This impact had its ultimate expression in Herbie Hancock’s 2007 session River: The Joni Letters, which gave Mitchell’s music a fresh treatment with guest vocalists Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Ray, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, and even Mitchell herself. The album earned much-deserved GRAMMY awards for Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

SFJAZZ will hold its annual Gala on May 8, 2015, honoring Joni Mitchell with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award for her artistic vision and contributions to modern music. The Gala concert, curated by Joni Mitchell herself and led by longtime collaborator Brian Blade and keyboardist John Cowherd, will feature a preeminient line-up interpreting her groundbreaking work.SFJAZZ Trustee Nion McEvoy and longtime SFJAZZ supporter Penny Coulter will co-chair the event. All proceeds from the SFJAZZ Gala 2015 will support SFJAZZ’s artistic and education programs. ■
