The School of Global Service of Sookmyung Women’s University ambitiously commenced its unique academic programs for the outstanding students from all over the world. With the aim of training future leaders in the highly competitive global environment, we provide our specially designed curricula for enterprising and promising undergraduates.

The most distinctive feature is that students are required to take the ‘Self Career Management’ course as a prerequisite in the first year. Moreover, by taking an aptitude test each semester, they will have a chance to choose the most appropriate career path when they graduate.

Majors are divided into two: Global Cooperation and Entrepreneurship. In the Global Cooperation major, we offer our differentiated set of interdisciplinary programs to the eminent students both in language skills and multi-cultural understandings so that they can start their career in global organizations or multinational corporations. In the Entrepreneurship major, we deliver our balanced programs both in theory and practice aspects so that students can establish their own enterprises or work for the new business planning departments of global companies, especially based on the women-specific delicacy and humanism.

The School of Global Service provides potential-filled students inarguably generous scholarship opportunities as well as various field-oriented and experimental courses. In addition, the numerous interdisciplinary subjects where the disciplines of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Sciences are harmoniously combined will be delivered by inviting competent internal and external experts as a faculty member. Lastly, I would like to expect your consistent interests and wholehearted supports for our program.

Dean of School of Global Service,

Prof. Dong-Ju Choi

Last winter, I enrolled at Sookmyung Women’s University because of the university’s distinct curriculum, the way courses are handled, and the availability of the nation’s first entrepreneurship program. Starting was never easy, but looking back, I have realized that the nervousness and worries I went through have truly become a rewarding experience. The special lectures and the Global Explorer Program have brought education to a whole new level. All these made time fly so fast. To those who want to succeed in a global scale, I hope you will consider Sookmyung Women’s University’s School of Global Service and make your dreams become reality.

Since we came back from Singapore, every member of our group was saying the same thing. There are various ways to learn and study something, but being able to experience the culture and environment of other countries can give us one of the most priceless knowledge. The SGS Global Explorer Program was an amazing gift. We conducted research on available universities before leaving for Singapore, but we were astonished to find that their universities were beyond our expectations. Singapore’s universities are unbelievably huge, and student accommodations are indescribably perfect. The project was enjoyable, but the most important lesson we learned and the real satisfaction from this exploration was how to build a project on our own. Singapore is smaller than Korea, but the country’s three universities are at the top 30 in the world. They value excellence in education. The Ministry of Education shoulders more than 80% of the school fees. At present, the Singapore government is investing in human resource to build a better country for students. Singapore was the perfect setting to conduct our study on “Students’ Satisfaction in University Education.” The SGS Global Explorer Program was certainly an unforgettable experience, and built the foundation for our future in the global market. This experience taught us that our country is not all we have; we need to go out into the world to expand our viewpoints. We would like to thank the university and the School of Global Service for this wonderful experience.

“ Perseverance + Creativity: The Secrets of International Success! ”

“ Tenacious effort towards one’s goal ”

The concept of social enterprise, which is getting significant media attention at present, is unclear and unfamiliar to 20-year old students like us. However, as this concept is important for the future of society, we took the initiative to study this concept. We worked on the theme “Social enterprise’s current situation and task in Hong Kong.” We chose Hong Kong because the country is more developed than Korea as regards the issue of social enterprise. Similar to the Korean government, the government of Hong Kong regards the issue of social enterprise importantly and supports social enterprises. The two countries, however, differ in their approach toward the issue.

Hong Kong’s government supports social enterprise but tries to keep the autonomy of social enterprise. On the other hand, the Korean government supports but at the same time tries to control social enterprise. However, both Hong Kong and Korea have the same task of keeping the balance between social enterprise, NGO, and the government. These three entities play different roles, but these roles are quite similar that the dividing line has become blurred. Therefore, keeping the balance and playing each role is a significant task. We obtained help from the researcher of the entrepreneurship center. She went with us to Hong Kong and helped us obtain professional knowledge necessary when attending meetings and conducting interviews. The SGS Global Explorer Program provided us the opportunity to experience what we cannot learn in the classroom. However, mere participation in this program will not suffice. How one tries and enjoys things to achieve the goal is the real lesson learned from this program.

Everyone knows New York City as one of the most dazzling, splendid cities in the world. Our team was selected to explore New York in order to learn true values, the effective conduct of case studies, and gain deeper understanding on entrepreneurship. We visited a Korean clothing manufacturing distribution company called “Samhee International,” and a handbag brand called “Sang-A” developed by Sang a Im, a rising star who is currently getting significant attention in the NY fashion scene. We also visited a Korean restaurant called “Bann,” which is gaining recognition from NY denizens. We also stopped at the store of a Korean cosmetic brand called “Amore Pacific,” which is loved by many American women. These represent Korean businesses that made it big in New York. We had the opportunity to listen to their success stories. Hearing their experiences and being able to see the actual business establishment and conduct was a remarkably vivid experience. We learned that endurance, diligence, and the unique, inherently Korean characteristics are needed for Korean businesses to successfully advance in foreign markets.

Korea can now compete with China and Japan in the international business arena. Consequently, these are also the reasons why Korean businesses have started to secure

a foothold in the New York market. In order to hasten the process, we need to catch the attention of the world with epochal and creative ideas so that we could show off the Korean power. We also learned from this experience the importance of cooperation. This journey required us to put our ideas together for us to move forward. Each member took responsibility for their assigned tasks. Success was the outcome of this journey.

Our team visited San Francisco and LA. It was important for us to prepare for the trip in advance, because the aim of this project was to explore America’s leading companies. Before the trip, we conducted several weekly discussions to talk about the research area each member should focus on. We studied our intended major focus beforehand through preliminary research. Moreover, we learned of ways on how to contact companies in advance with the help of researchers from the Institute of Global Human Resource Center. We encountered successful entrepreneurs who overcame hardships. These entrepreneurs share a common characteristic – the ability to solve difficult problems creatively.

Especially, in San Francisco, we were fortunate enough to pay a visit to the famous company called Google and interviewed a Korean researcher working in Software Development Department. It was not only a very thrilling experience per se but surely something to vaunt to our friends. We could feel the free and innovative environment of Google and have a moment to think about why Google has been so successful in the Internet world.

This tour provided us the opportunity to experience a unique technology, fast-paced development, and real entrepreneurship, especially in Silicon Valley. Therefore, it was a great opportunity to prepare us toward becoming future global leaders.

“ Every SMWU student must have dreamed of Global Exploration at least once.”

Going through the highly competitive selection process of the Global Explorer Program was not an easy task, especially for freshmen students. Having been provided the chance to participate in the program was in itself an accomplishment.

Social enterprise is an issue whose relevance has grown in the past ten years. London is a city where several social enterprises are located, making it the perfect place to explore the topic. The excitement we felt on our arrival abruptly changed when we started visiting social enterprises in the city. Unlike South Korea, where social enterprises are focused on public welfare, social enterprise in London is based on innovative and creative ideas. For example, Bash Creation is a company which opens eco-friendly clubs.

Through Bash Creation’s eco-friendly club activities, Londoners have become more aware of environmental problems. After visiting the companies, our team members discussed ways on how to apply the London social enterprise strategies in South Korea. We also deliberated on ways on how to help Korean citizens fully understand the concept of social enterprise. It was fun to find new ways to perceive the future of social enterprises with peers who study the same major as mine. Moreover, “SGS Global Explorer” program accorded us a significant opportunity to get close to Prof. Choi, who is like a father to SGS students. As we spent time with him in London, we thrived on his love for his students and felt thankful for having such a passionate professor with us.

Overall, this London exploration offered me memories of good friends and a caring professor as well as excellent knowledge.
