future needs and expectations are. We need your support and we want your input.

We hope to see a representative from each family!

DVAR TORAH By Bob Harris

Parshat Terumah begins with an unusual

request. G-d commands Moshe Rabbeinu to speak

to the Jewish People and ask them for terumah.

The word terumah is generally translated as

“portion” or “offering.” It derives from the He-

brew verb to rise or to present (a contribution).

Terumah may then be translated as something that

is offered usually for a higher purpose. It is given

voluntarily, without coercion and of one’s own vo-

lition and is, therefore, a special form of tsedakah.

Moshe is not informed at this point what the te-

rumah is for but the text makes it clear that it is

for some G-dly purpose.

In the next several verses G-d describes to

Moshe the valuables that would be acceptable as

terumah and then utters the key verse of the Par-

sha and sets the theme for the rest of Sefer Shemot.

“Make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell in their

midst.” (25:8).

Sforno asks the obvious question. Why does

G-d want or need a sanctuary in which to dwell?

The Jewish People had just received the revelation

of Sinai. They were filled with religious fervor and

felt G-d’s presence wherever they were. They

could and did pray and offer sacrifices whenever

and wherever they wished. At the very end of Par-

shat Yithro G-d tells Moshe that a mound of dirt

could serve as an altar and He would hear their

prayers and come to them.

Page 3 Continued from page 1 What was the need for a holy sanctuary where the Jewish People would come to feel closer to G-d, pray

and offer sacrifices, if they were already doing that without a formal edifice or sanctuary? Sforno relates the

building of the mikdash to the sin of the Golden Calf and the fact that within weeks of Sinai, the Jews were

involved in idolatry. G-d realized that the fervor and religious high they experienced at Sinai would not be

able to sustain them through the generations, They needed something more tangible to represent G-d whom

they could not see but whose presence they could feel. Thus the text says that first a mikdash would be built

where the people could pray and sacrifice and obey the laws of G-d and then that sanctuary would act as well

as a mishkan - a dwelling place for G-d. But if the sanctuary ceased to exist because the Jews strayed, as they

invariably did, G-d would no longer dwell there and the mishkan would be no more.

Through the years the Jews strayed many times and many sanctuaries were built and forsaken or de-

stroyed. In modern times the basic concept and purpose of the original mikdash is carried out in our Syna-

gogues, which house the Torah scrolls and summon the people to gather and pray and to feel the presence of

G-d. To a lesser degree, our authentic Jewish homes serve the same purpose and therefore they are each re-

ferred to as a mikdash me’at.

Now, as we wait for the third and final Temple in Jerusalem, we must be mindful that our synagogues

and our homes should be consistent with the purpose of the original mikdash - a place where laws of the To-

rah are followed and the Word of G-d is studied so that He will dwell in our midst and the Jewish people, by

example, will be able to carry out their mission of being an or goyim - a light unto the nations.
