PARSHA VA’ETCHANAN

The parsha of Va’Etchanan has Moshe pleading

with Hashem to allow him to enter the Promised

Land. Hashem commands him not to continue with

his prayers, knowing full well that such prayer would

result in permission to enter the land now forbidden.

Hashem commands Moshe to strengthen and

reinforce his decision to appoint Yehoshua as the

new leader of klal Yisrael.

Denied this greatest hope, Moshe climbs to the top

of mount Nevo to view the land which every Jew

over the centuries has longed to see and touch.

Moshe sees the land from all four directions and

longs for the day that the people will inherit the

land that Hashem has promised our forefathers.

Having recounted the historical events of the past

40 years, and given repeated warning against the

temptations awaiting his people in Canan, Moshe

repeats the covenant and laws which govern the

relationship between Hashem and his people.

Moshe repeats the words of the Ten

Commandments followed by the greatest of all

declarations the Shema.

“The Lord is our God, the Lord who is one.”

Moshe reminds us, “You are a chosen people,

chosen to be a blessing to mankind, to teach

peace and bring understanding to the nations of

the universe. “

Thus, Moshe is teaching us that the Torah is meant

for the living; those of us here, alive today. It is not

to be consigned to ancestors, preserved in

museums as revered relics of an almost forgotten

past. It is not even enough to study torah, if its

status is that of vestige at best. Torah is to be

learned and employed in all situations and

problems of living people, because it is relevant to

all who are alive today.

Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Gabe Elias

PARASHAT VA’ETCHANAN

Parashat Va'etchanan once again recounts the

story of Mattan Torah and the Asseret HaDibrot (the

Ten Commandments) which we read about back in

Parashat Yitro (and over Chag Shavuot). After all

the dramatic effect Hashem directs Moshe to in-

struct Bnei Yisrael, "Shuvu Lachem L'Ohalehem,"--Tell

them [the nation] to return to their tents/homes

(5:27). The simple understanding of this command is

that husbands and wives, who had separated as

part of the preparations for Har Sinai, are now

permitted to return and live under the same tent

again. But the Kotzker Rebbe offers a deeper

explanation: it is easy to be inspired and feel

excitement when one is swept up and overtaken by

the power, influence, and dynamism of the

experience at Har Sinai. But if you leave to return

home, "L'Ohalehem," to your tents and back to

pedestrian life, perhaps the emotions and

enthusiasm wil run dry.

This was the challenge of returning home after Har

Sinai. On a similar note, this Shabbat, the Shabbat

right after Tisha'a B'Av, is known as 'Shabbat

Nachamu.' We read a special haftara from Sefer

Yashayahu, which offers comfort and solace after

our period of mourning and sadness. We are now

attempting to reintegrate into our daily routines,

with the knowledge that the Beit HaMikdash was

not rebuilt and all Simcha in this world is somewhat

lessened and not whole.

Judaism teaches us a very valuable lesson. Our

highs should not be too high, and our lows should

never be too low. We must serve Hashem to our

fullest ability both at Har Sinai and on Tisha'a B'Av,

but also when we are living our daily lives and

schedules, in our "tents."

Shabbat Shalom!

Rabbi Yehuda Moses
