Fishing Hazard – Breagh Pipelines – Exposed Fibre Optic Cable

Two freespans have been identified on the 20” gas export line (PL2768). Please exercise caution in this area.

The Breagh fibre optic cable (PL2770) is exposed on the seabed along various stages of the route between Redcar and the Breagh A platform.

A scallop dredger became snagged on an exposed section of the fibre optic cable in June 2019 causing serious damage to the fibre optic cable and subsequently had to abandon retrieval of his gear for safety reasons. This notification is made to the fishermen, operating between Redcar and the Breagh A platform, to be advised that the fibre optic cable represents a serious snag risk to both scallop dredgers and static gear fishing in the vicinity of the line.

Fishermen are advised to stay away from the line to avoid the risk of becoming snagged on the unburied sections of cable.

West Scotland – Scientific Morings

Mariners are advised that Marine Scotland Science has serviced and redeployed nine moorings around the Hebrides and Minches off West Scotland. The moorings have been deployed as part of the EU COMPASS and MarPAMM projects, and carry research equipment that records underwater noise and the echolocation clicks of dolphins and porpoises.

Moorings will be deployed at the nine locations until March 2022. They will be serviced and redeployed in Feb/Mar 2020, June 2020 and Oct/Nov 2020, and periodically thereafter.

All moorings are sub-surface. The moorings extend no more than 6 metres vertically from the seabed. There is more than 30 metres clearance to the surface above every mooring.

Rig anchors may extend over one mile from rig positions; anchor buoys are not always deployed. There may be additional structures called anchor pennants, deployed up to 200 metres from each anchor. In the interests of safety and to avoid fishing gear damage, fishing close to, or within anchor patterns, should be avoided. Fishermen may contact the installation or the ERRV (standby vessel) for positions of the anchors.
