  • WELCOME! TO

ST. PAUL'S ELKINS PARK A LOCAL GEM AND A NATIONAL TREASURE

A Very Brief History From the late 1850s through the Civil War and Reconstruction, the Cheltenham area was a spiritual, financial,

and military hotbed of the effort to end slavery in America. St. Paul’s was an Abolitionist Church and was in many ways a focal point of that effort. Built in 1861 by Jay Cooke, who became known as the Financial Savior of the Union, it is the sole remaining public building in Cheltenham connected to that era.

It is the oldest surviving purpose-built house of worship in Cheltenham, expanded by Julian Abele, the first African American architecture graduate at the University of Pennsylvania, and the unsung and storied chief designer for famed Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer.

St Paul’s is a spiritual place, having historical connections with Lucretia Mott, Amelia Earhart, the Gilded Age, the sinking of the Titanic, and nearby Camp William Penn, where troops of color trained for the Civil War: St Paul’s was the only church to conduct regular religious services at the camp.

WIBG Radio 99 was started here in 1924 – which eventually became THE Philadelphia Top 40 radio station playing both White Pop and Rock, and Black Rhythm and Blues music during the height of the Civil Rights era.

It is a beautiful Community Gathering Place and Concert Hall with 13 spectacular Tiffany stained glass windows.

St. Paul’s Elkins Park is an active, multicultural, ecumenical, and inclusive Episcopal Church - with deep, historic roots - and with strong mission commitment to its local community and to the world.

The Friends of St. Paul’s Elkins Park is a non-profit, separately incorporated, secular organization, with a Board of Directors made up of people of many faiths from our local community. The goals of the Friends of St. Paul’s Elkins Park are:

    • To maintain and preserve St. Paul’s historic site for our community and for the nation. • To celebrate our community’s history and to educate our community and its visitors about its

importance. • To ensure that St. Paul’s continues to be a valued community resource, by producing and

hosting educational, cultural and artistic events, and concerts.

The Friends of St. Paul's Elkins Park Concert Series is supported in part by the Pennsylvania

Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

  • This Holiday Pops Concert is

Dedicated to the memory of Ernest Bailey Educator, Activist, Philosopher, Rector’s Warden of St. Paul’s Church

Board member of the Friends of St. Paul’s Elkins Park Retired Worker and Manager of on-the-ground crisis unit

    for the Philadelphia School System.

  • Coming on Christmas Day – the World Premier of

Listen to the Best from the Friends of St. Paul’s Elkins Park acclaimed

Multicultural Concert Series in downloadable podcasts at www.stpaulsfriends.org/WIBGBirthplace - starting December 15th!

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, WIBG RADIO 99 captured over 70% of the Delaware Valley radio audience. This time period corresponded with the height of the Civil Rights Movement, and WIBG was at that time the only radio station in the area using the TOP 40 radio format, which played BOTH White Rock and Pop, and Black Rhythm and Blues music. We at St. Paul’s believe that Music – like all the Arts – makes a bridge of understanding between cultures; a bridge that leads straight to each other’s hearts. Stations WHAT and especially WDAS were the true Philadelphia radio heroes of the Civil Rights movement, but if you were a Baby Boomer, especially in the lily-white Philadelphia suburbs, WIBG RADIO 99 was that bridge to one another’s culture. WIBG (standing for Why I Believe in God) was started as a religious radio station in the basement of St. Paul’s Elkins Park in 1924. Eventually sold, WIBG continued to broadcast St. Paul’s worship services through the late 1960s. St. Paul’s is proud of its early radio mission, and of the part that its child WIBG played in multiracial understanding through music from 1955 to 1965 and beyond. St. Paul’s is proud to broadcast once again from the

    Birthplace of WIBG RADIO 99!

  • Lyric-Soprano Laura Hall-Carney is a Philadelphia native and a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). It was there that her love for classical music took root. She received a Bachelors of Music Education Degree from Jackson State University (Jackson, MS). Laura has 26 years as a music teacher, and her students have ranged from Kindergarten through the twelfth grades. During those years, she has directed several musicals including Oliver, Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz and Music Man. As a high school choral director, Laura

won several first place awards and superior ratings from choral competitions in Montreal, Florida, Michigan and Virginia. Currently, she is teaching at Parkway Elementary School in Ewing, NJ. She has performed as a soloist with the Handel Society of Jackson and Opera South. She has won several classical vocal competitions including the Leontyne Price Vocal Arts competition. Although classically trained, Laura has sung music of all genres; performing for several years with Waverly Austin and Friends, a gospel Jazz group, and also with the late jazz legend, Dr. Trudy Pitts and her husband “Mr. C”. Additionally, she enjoys performing around the Philadelphia area and beyond. She shares her musical gifts with local churches, concert halls, and presently serves as resident cantor at the Holy Apostles and the Mediator Episcopal Church in West Philadelphia. Baritone Shango-Jamal Lewis has performed all over the world singing musical genres from Gospel, Jazz, Pop, Musical Theater, Classical, and more. He is a Vocal Arts alumnus of the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), and Morgan State University. Shango-Jamal has performed with the Philadelphia, Detroit, and Boston Symphony Orchestras. He presently divides his church membership and regular music ministry between St. Paul's Elkins Park and Zion Baptist Church of Philadelphia. He counts directing and arranging among his many musical talents and his first love is teaching the skills and disciplines of the performing arts to young people. His most vital ministry for the Lord is working with young people from difficult social and economic circumstances; Shango-Jamal teaches at the Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. He continues to perform in sacred and secular music concerts in a variety of musical styles in churches and concert halls throughout the greater Philadelphia region.

  • Dave Posmontier has played keyboard since the age of seven and has played professionally for the past 50 years. In 1980, Dave and his brother Rich formed the Posmontier Brothers Quintet, performing extensively at concerts, clubs, radio and television appearances in the Philadelphia area and producing an album, "PBQ'" of Dave's original music in 1985. Dave has performed and recorded with many jazz artists including Christian McBride, James Moody, Chris Potter, Mickey Roker, Bobbie Durham, John Blake, Mike Richmond, Bootsie Barnes, Tony Williams (sax), Larry McKenna, Grover Washington Jr., David "Fathead" Newman, and Johnny Hartman. He also plays traditional and innovative klezmer music with a band called,

“Klingon Klezmer.” They have performed in a number of major concert halls throughout Germany and have released two CDs. Dave also enjoys playing traditional jazz and is part of bassist Ed Wise’s New Orleans Jazz Band, playing concerts along the East Coast. In celebration of its 100th birthday in 2007, the renowned Settlement Music School honored 100 alumni who have made a difference in the world of music. Dave and his brother Rich were chosen to receive this honor. Currently, Dave is playing, composing, arranging, teaching, and participating in educational jazz concerts, workshops and clinics in schools throughout the area. Dave can be heard on several CD’s of Philadelphia area jazz artists and in 2010, released a CD, "Posterity" featuring his original compositions and arrangements. He has recently released a live acoustic trio CD, "Deep Pockets".

Doug Hirlinger is a multifaceted musician whose diverse history includes extensive experience as a drummer, composer, educator, and producer. He possess a fascination with the synthesis of technology and music and increasingly works with the cutting edge software known as Max/MSP. Doug’s first musical language and point of reference is Jazz, due primarily to his upbringing in St. Louis. Since first moving to New York City in 1995, Doug has been a resident of both NYC and Philadelphia multiple times, moving from one city to the other more than once,

  • immersing himself in the deep and rich music scenes of both communities. On drum set Doug is as much at home in jazz and experimental settings as he is on stage with the Philadelphia Orchestra. During the past 20 plus years living in his two cities of choice, he has toured Europe and the US, and played many times in the most prominent venues in New York and Philadelphia, As a sideman, Hirlinger has performed with a plentiful list of well known musicians that include Ralph Bowen, Stanley Jordan and Tim Warfield as well as with Philly jazz heroes Bootsie Barnes, Larry McKenna, and Sid Simmons. Doug’s frequent collaborators include seasoned bassist Gene Perla (who worked for many years with one of Doug’s heroes, Elvin Jones) and the Jost Project. Doug made his debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in March of 2017 playing drum set on the world premiere of Imaginary Day, a Duo Concerto for Vibraphone, Marimba, and Orchestra composed by Pat Metheny. David Brodie started playing the electric bass at the age of thirteen and first took on the upright bass at nineteen while enrolled at Berklee College of Music. After a year in Spain, he returned to his native Philadelphia where he quickly joined up with guitarist Jimmy Bruno, with whom he played for the next several years. From that point, his reputation well established, Brodie has enjoyed a busy playing and recording career and has performed with some of the world's greatest jazz musicians including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Potter and Randy Brecker while performing regularly with some of Philadelphia's finest such as Larry McKenna, John Swana, Dave Posmontier and Tom Lawton. He is the bassist for M'oudswing, a world fusion ensemble with whom he has performed at the Tanjazz festival in Tangiers, Morocco and at the Festival Mawazine Rythmes Du Monde in Rabat.
