Long Term Industry TrendsMining and Resources

Source: Market Watch 2015

The world's largest mining companies by market value had accumulated nearly $200 billion in net debt by 2014, six times

higher than a decade ago, according to consultancy EY, while their earnings only increased roughly two-and-a-half times.

Large mining companies have written off roughly 90% of all the acquisitions they made since 2007, according to Citigroup

Inc

On a ratio of revenue basis comparison, the mining and metals sector spends 90% less on technology and innovation

than the petroleum sector. And yet there is plenty of opportunity for innovation to add value to the mining and metals sector

The mining equipment and technology sector takes on average 15 years to commercialize new innovations…. 5 times

longer than their peers in Oil & Gas and the Energy Sector

The key drivers of innovation in the commodity sector has traditionally been focused on driving down individual mining

companies relative position on the cost curve.

As low margins and market volatility continue to drive productivity improvements in the sector, the industry trend is shifting

towards more open source and collaborative approaches to innovation.
