Exploring Place-Based Learning with the Chilliwack Museum and Archives 9:00am – 2:30pm Presenters: Stephanie Clinton, Education and Engagement Coordinator at the Chilliwack Museum and Archives, Shannon Bettles, Archivist at the Chilliwack Museum and Archives and Jane Lemke, Curator at the Chilliwack Museum and Archives

The morning portion of this session will begin at the Chilliwack Archives in Evergreen Hall. The Chilliwack Museum and Archives’ Archivist and Curator will take you on a tour of the archival and artifact collections. Come and learn about Chilliwack’s past through artifact interpretation and find out how to use your local archives as a resource for classroom teaching. As a group, you will then walk over to the Chilliwack Museum where you will spend the afternoon. This part of the day will consist of breakout groups focusing on different local history themes. Using primary and secondary sources, groups will explore lesson plan development using the new social studies curriculum and focus on place-based learning. Groups will also have a chance to explore the current Chilliwack Museum exhibits. Lunch is provided at the museum. Please dress accordingly as you will be walking between the Evergreen Hall and the Chilliwack Museum. Target Audience: All Teachers

FUN FRIENDS 8:45am – 3:15pm Presenter: BC FRIENDS Trainer

Fun FRIENDS is an ‘early years’ version of the FRIENDS program for K-1. This one day training session provides teachers with an overview of anxiety, an introduction to the FUN FRIENDS skills and concepts taught in the classroom, a step-by-step leader’s manual, a sample parent guide/workbook and other supplementary material and the eligibility to deliver FRIENDS and order additional program materials. Target Audience: Kindergarten and Grade 1 Teachers, School Counsellors and other K-Grade 1 School Personnel who will directly implement the program with K and Grade 1 students in a classroom.

Please note: FRIENDS has asked us that this session be for those who work directly with Kindergarten and Grade 1 students only and the registration deadline for this session is FEBRUARY 5th, 2016.

CPI Training: Non-Violent Crisis Intervention 8:45am – 2:30pm Presenter: Glenda Gaudette, SSS Special Ed. Department

CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) focuses on early intervention and non-physical methods for preventing and managing disruptive behaviour. Promoting Social Emotional Learning with Mindfulness Practice (Elementary) Presenter: Molly Lawlor, Primary Author of the MindUP program and Director for Curriculum and Research for Taxi Dog Education Programs

Research has revealed schools to be one of the primary settings to promote social-emotional learning (SEL). Increasingly, school-based primary prevention efforts are incorporating mindfulness-based practices to foster attention, resiliency, and well-being. Both SEL and mindfulness-based initiatives emphasize the development of positive self, moral, social, and emotional understanding. This session presents a conceptual framework that describes how mindfulness practices may deepen SEL within K-12 educational contexts. Concepts will be expanded to explore practical tools for educators. Target Audience: Elementary educators

Deconstructing Myths Presenter: Rick Joe, Aboriginal Support Teacher

In this workshop, participants are submerged into the depths of the mistruths that have made up the belief systems of mainstream Canada for far too long. Participants will be challenged to dig deeper through research, which must include historical documentation and oral testimony as opposed to acceptance of archaic misinformation and hidden fabricated narratives. In a commitment to the continuation of the work that teachers started with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, BCTF invites all teachers to join in the effort to seek truth through the deconstruction of myths in curriculum. Embedding Indigenous Worldviews and Authors into Secondary Classrooms Presenters: Brad Baker, Administrator in North Vancouver, Stephanie Maki, Eng/SS Teacher in North Vancouver and Jennifer Tieche, Teacher Librarian in North Vancouver

Participants will gain a stronger understanding of the reasoning as to why we need to embed Indigenous Worldviews in meaningful and relevant ways for all learners and educators. Participants will be guided through the process of understanding the historical significance of Indigenous Peoples in British Columbia and how the historical piece must be understood prior to moving forward. After this introduction, participants will be given concrete examples of how to embed Aboriginal Worldviews in the secondary classroom across the curriculum. For example, the use of Authentic Authors in mainstream classrooms and incorporating authentic Indigenous voices in a library resource collection will be explored. Target Audience: Secondary Teachers

Mindfulness, Children and Happiness Presenter: Ven. Yin Kit (Sister Jessie), Po Lam Buddhist Association

With deep insight, understanding, warmth and humour, Sister Jessie will help shed light on why mindfulness in the workplace and our classrooms have begun to sweep across the continent. If you have ever been curious about how mindfulness works, this workshop is for you. If you have started using a program like Mind Up, this workshop allows you to hear a master meditator speak and demonstrate the practice of mindfulness.

Using direct experience, Sister Jessie will explore the intersections of mindfulness, self-care and care of the students in your classroom. Demonstrating the use of simple things like popcorn, our own human bodies and every day classroom experiences, Sister Jessie will guide participants through mindfulness exercises that teachers, EAs and parents can use to support children in becoming more grounded, happier and harmonious members of their families and our school communities. Are our classrooms populated by students who are engaged in the mathematics and deep thinking for the duration of class? This session will explore what a thinking classroom looks like and how to create a thinking classroom in mathematics. We will learn about some changes that you can apply right now to shift the culture of your classroom towards one where students are engaged, enthusiastic and independent in their learning. This presentation will focus on the benefits of exercise and the effects of exercise on the brain. This workshop will be focused on helping students to set weekly personal healthy living goals, how to complete the Live 5-2-1-0 adapted to the Medicine Wheel template to encourage balance and healthy living with students, How Much Sugar is In Popular Drinks game (increasing awareness about sugary drinks and providing tasty, alternative beverage options) and ideas for creating a Live 5-2-1-0 friendly classroom. Using MyEducation to Communicate with Parents and Students

Interactive Games Presenter: Drew Ann Wake, Live Wires Design Ltd.

In this session, Drew Ann will present a series of interactive games they have designed to help teachers explore the issue of sexual exploitation. The following games will be discussed:

Missing – A mystery game based on a Vancouver police case where a teenage boy was lured to the US by a pedophile he met on-line.

Mirror Image – Based on a New Brunswick incident in which a group of cheerleaders were lured by a man pretending to be a modelling agent.

Get Eddie – A soon-to-be released game that illustrates how teenagers can find themselves in the thrall of a high school bully who uses the threat of physical violence to coerce them.

Betrayed – This program invites teachers to explore and discuss the stories behind images from Sierra Leone, Bangladesh and Mexico.

Infusing Aboriginal Content in Grades 10-12 Presenter: Rick Joe, Aboriginal Support Teacher

This new BCTF workshop is designed for teachers who wish to incorporate more Aboriginal content in their classrooms. This workshop is designed to create awareness around integrating Aboriginal perspectives and quality Aboriginal resources in the classroom through hands on activities. Target Audience: Teachers (gr. 10-12)

In this practical session, Hollie and Jane will share three simple steps for setting up small group literacy time. Then, they will walk you through how to plan a lesson for your small group literacy instruction. Be The Change Earth Alliance is a BC based charitable organization and has co-developed the SLS curriculum materials through a consortium of educators dedicated to bringing global sustainability issues into BC classrooms. In this session, we will explore how the online graphing calculator, Desmos, can be used to support specific content areas in Math 9-12.
