Story Partners

Working with someone at home each person takes a turn to write and develop a story. First decide on what type of story you are going to write. Remember to introduce the characters, say where the story takes place, what the problem in the story is and how this is resolved.

Persuasive Writing Write a letter to persuade a celebrity to visit the school. Pick your favourite celebrity and try to convince them to come and teach the class for the day. For this try to focus on all the skills they can teach you and how they would be useful to you.

Character Description Before we write a story we think about the characters in the story. Create you own character by drawing them and around your picture use words to describe what type of person they are and what they like.

Acrostic Poetry The slogan for the country has been stay home stay safe. Write an acrostic poem either using all or part of this slogan. For example you may choose to write on for STAY HOME or STAY SAFE.

Setting Description Use the image to write a story – try to describe thinking about everything you see, smell and hear.

Punctuation Correct punctuation is very important. Complete the worksheet making sure you fill in each empty balloon. Once completed why not try to write you own sentences using each of the different punctuation endings - . / ! / ?

Word Classes Nouns, verbs and adjectives are important when we write sentences – nouns are naming words like table or chair, verbs are doing words like running or singing and adjectives describe like yellow or big. For all your reading strategy tasks you can use the book you received at Christmas.

Prediction

Find something to read at home – it can be a book or even a newspaper article. Before you read it make a prediction on what it is about and share this with someone. When making your prediction look at the title and any images or illustrations available. Did you predict correctly?

Visualisation Find something to read at home – using any descriptive language used in the text visualise this by drawing what you think it will look like. If it is a character from a book you may need to use your imagination to fill in any gaps such as the type or colour of their clothes.

Making Connections Making connections to texts you have read, films you have watched or things you have done is a great tool for helping to write predictions. Can you make any text-text, text-film or text-self connections. For example a text to text might be Harry Potter and The Wizards of Once as they are both about wizards.

Summarising Frome a text you have read use the five finger retell to summarise the text. This should include 1) Who are the characters? 2) Where/when is the story set? 3) What is the problem in the story? 4) What happened at the start, middle and end of the story? 5) How was the problem resolved?

Scanning Skills Scanning is a very important skill. Read some text at home and find some key words. Ask someone to find these words – one at a time - by scanning; how quickly can they find each word?

Film Literacy Watch a film – close your eyes when you start to hear music. Can you tell what feelings are being expressed through the music. Write brief notes about the music you heard and how it made you feel.

Literal Questions Read a text at home. Write some literal questions for a text you have read. Now read the text to someone at home and ask them the questions – can they answer all you questions?

True/False/Can’t Tell From something you have read at home write two statements that are true, false and can’t tell. Can

someone at home find what category they fall into.

Clarifying Meaning Read a text and list any words you are unfamiliar with.

Inference Look at the sheet with the inference challenge cards.

Word Search Complete the word search for some of our phoneme words.

Alphabet Find ten items around the house and place them in alphabetical

order.
