Calvary by the Sea has a wonderful Stephen Ministers Program. The following is a letter proof that Stephen Ministries make a difference in peoples lives.
Dearest Stephen Ministers,
Thank you so much for your time, love and support.
Stephen Ministers are members of our Church who
have taken time to train to be caregivers to build up
the Body of Christ. Our Stephen Ministers receive 50
hours of training over many weeks. These ministers
then take time to regularly help someone like me, a
Broken One. We Broken Ones ask for help. The
need for help could be the result of a transition of life
that leaves us feeling alone and unsure, the devastat-
ing loss of a loved one to death, the struggle of caring
for a loved one who is moving closer to God and
leaving us behind bit by bit, or maybe a deep loss of
connection to our own being, to where we don’t know
how to find the joy any more. Whatever the event we
need help finding God’s healing grace.
I was hurting and asked for help and a Minister was
paired with me and together we joined to heal. The
healing happened with listening, and praying. Not
with advice or fixing by one human to another. The
fixing is done as we pray together and invite our God
into the moment.
We meet and talk and pray. Again and again, the pat-
tern stays the same. No advice, no rescuing, no de-
serting, no fixing by human means. It is all about
bringing God into our lives more fully and allowing
God’s healing to happen.
Together we found that the meeting, talking and pray-
ing opens us up. The fear, pain and overwhelm feel-
ings somehow lessen just enough to allow the heart to
open to the Spirit and love of God. Without realizing
it, without feeling it, without knowing it, I knew I was
loved. Over time I opened a bit and God entered to
fill my void.
The Stephen Minister and the Broken One both feel
God working in them. Yet, the changes may not be
readily apparent to those closest to the heart of the
matter.
Then one day there is a glimmer of gratitude, a glim-
mer of hope, a glimmer of renewed faith, a glimmer of
love in the gift of our sharing and praying. The prob-
lems are there still, and yet somehow they are not so
overwhelming. I’m not even sure how that happens,
but it does. Our time together opens us to Christ,
changes us and the world we inhabit.
The healing is slow, but gradually there is a hint of
light. A feeling of gratitude replaces the overwhelm-
ing pain. The love of gratitude allows us to find hope
for today.
My life has been transformed by the love of a Stephen
Minister. I am more grateful than can be expressed to
our Stephen Ministers. Grateful for a community that
promotes and allows this amazing gift of love.
I am one of the Broken Ones who is less broken due to
the love that slipped in when I wasn’t paying attention.
Healing happened from the sharing, listening, being
heard, and praying. I have learned to lay my burdens
at the foot of the Cross and just let it go.
Thank you Calvary by the Sea and Stephen Ministers
and Leaders for the time you devoted to this practice.
You saved this life.
Amen.
Would you ever consider becoming a Stephen Minister?
Pastor Tim
NOTES FROM TOM
I remember my maternal grandmother laughing at
herself while telling me about one of her ordeals. It
seems that the first thing she did this particular morn-
ing after washing her face was to put on her glasses,
go to the kitchen and make a pot of fresh coffee.
While she was walking to the kitchen she noticed that
the vision in one of her eyes was blurry.
Thinking that perhaps she had been too eager for her
morning coffee she washed her face again, this time
in the kitchen sink. When she put her glasses back on
it was the same—the vision in one of her eyes was
still blurry and out-of-focus.
Obviously, she thought, her glasses are smudged and
her vision obscured by dirt. It was only when she was
cleaning her glasses that she realized that one of her
lens had fallen out. Laughing at herself, she under-
stood why she couldn’t see!
In remembering this story I’ve thought about how we
all have times when our vision is blurred and out-of-
focus. Sometimes it is our actual vision, but too often
it is our spiritual vision which is obscured.
Unlike Grandmother, when we have problems of the
spirit we can’t simply go the optometrist or to Longs
and buy another pair of glasses. I like what Shirley
Erena Murray, a hymn writer from New Zealand, said
in 1992 about maintaining clear spiritual vision.
Come and find the quiet center
In the crowded life we lead,
Find the room for hope to enter,
Find the frame where we are freed:
Clear the chaos and the clutter,
Clear our eyes, that we can see
All the things that really matter,
Be at peace, and simply be.
Silence is a friend who claims us,
Cools the heat and slows the pace
God it is who speaks and names us,
Knows our being, touches base,
Making space within our thinking,
Lifting shades to show the sun,
Raising courage when we’re shrinking,
Finding scope for faith begun.
In the Spirit let us travel,
Open to each other’s pain,
Let our loves and fears unravel,
Celebrate the space we gain:
There’s a place for deepest dreaming,
There’s a time for heart to care,
In the Spirit’s lively scheming
There is always room to spare!
Keep singing! See you in worship—

We are approaching the end of the school year
at Calvary by the Sea Montessori School. This
year has seemed to move so quickly it is hard to
believe it will be coming to a close. The children
are all delighted to come to school each day.
Some almost fly out of the car in the morning
ready to start their day.
Our worming has had great success this year.
Parents help to make worm tea, excellent for
your plants. If you would like to purchase a gal-
lon or two, let us know and we will save you
some. Right now our garden is full of beautiful
flowers!
Our Walk-A-Thon is on May 11th. The children
will be running or walking to earn money for our
school. We are hoping to be able to replace the
surface under our play structure with monies
earned! The children have been practicing every
day they can. The top money earners are treated
with a night of camping with a couple of the
teachers!
Our Walk-A-Thon cheer:
Calvary kids are really great!
We're the best school in the state.
Calvary teachers are the best.
They work real hard and never rest.
Calvary school is really cool,
'Cause we're a Montessori School.
Calvary, Calvary, Calvary Montessori School!
May 18th is our Graduation and end of year pot
luck. We have eight children who have complet-
ed our full program who will be
graduating this year:
McKenzie Cabanilla-Arakaki
Nathan Geller
Sam Kim
Milo Marvel
Max Nable
Chloe Sakauye
Leia Schwengel
Izabella Sylvester
Congratulations to these children!
Our Summer program will be running May 29th
–
July 6th
. We are opening this program to those
that are not currently enrolled in our school and
have some openings available. It you know of
someone with children ages 2 – 6 and looking for
a fun summer program we would love to have
them join us!
With aloha,
Kay Burgoyne
