SHARPSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Volume 1, Issue 8 Sharpsville High School May 2015 PREPARING TOMORROW’S LEADERS – EDUCATION FOR THE HEAD, HEART & HAND In just a few short weeks you will you’re your cap and gown and approach the stage after your name is announced. Each of you will approach the stage once your name is called and I will meet you there. In my hand I will be holding your diploma and on my face I will be wearing a smile. I am so proud of you. Yes, I realize we have not been together very long; however, in these few short months I have come to care about you very much. I will miss you. I have heard some say that high school is the best time of your life. I disagree. The high school experience is different for everyone. Some of you have had a lot of success. You have done well in school. The content was challenging, but you learned it quickly. Some of you had to work very hard to be successful. Others found no connection to the content and as a result, found it difficult to spend much time focusing on homework, papers, and studying for exams. Some of you became involved in athletics or other clubs/organizations in your time at Sharpsville High School. You found a group you could call your own. This did not come without drama or fights, but one way or another you worked it out. Some of you had a hard time fitting in. Maybe it was because you were not originally from Sharpsville, you were just a shy person, you did not want to get involved in typical high school activities, you just wanted to be alone, or you simply were not accepted by your peers (this one saddens me the most). You will soon find out that life after high school is filled with uncertainty. In fact, you may even come to crave this time once again. The simplicity of it, the expected routines, and the sense of knowing what to expect can be a rather inviting environment to live in. The challenge that life will now bring is simply too exciting to pass up. You have waited your whole life for the moment to spread your wings – here it is. I have some advice for you: Learn to be flexible. Nothing will ever really go as planned. Learn to forgive. Forgiveness simply means that you are moving on and leaving the past in the past. You cannot move forward with your heels dug into the dirt. Take a chance. Nothing exciting was ever created and no discovery was ever made without someone taking a chance when nobody else would. Put yourself out there. Learn that failure is a part of success. Those individuals who took a chance also failed a lot. We all fail, but they learned from the failure and persevered. Learn to learn. You have not even lived a quarter of your life yet. Guess what – you have a lot to learn. It is okay. Learn to love. There is too much anger and hate in this world. Be the person who breaks the cycle. Be the person who refuses to let anger rule his/her life. Be courageous. Do what is right when nobody else will. This decision may result in you losing out on something you want, but at least you will not lose a piece of yourself or your integrity. Value time over money. I have a feeling that when I take my last breath that I will not be thinking about the money I have in my bank account. I can only pray that I am not regretting the time I did not spend with my loved ones. To the Class of 2015 – I wish you the very best that life has to offer. I wish I could say it will be handed to you, but that would be a lie. I can only say that you will always have my support and affection. Once you are my student you are always my student; etched forever in my heart. Principal Perspective Timothy J. Dadich

PREPARING TOMORROW’S LEADERS – EDUCATION FOR THE HEAD, HEART & HAND

In just a few short weeks you will you’re your cap and gown and approach the stage after your name is announced.

I have some advice for you:

Learn to be flexible.

Be

the person who breaks the cycle.

ENGLISH Mrs. Butchy – English Festival Congratulations go out to our competitors at the 2015 YSU English Festival. Our students attended the event with over 800 readers and writers from Western PA and northeastern Ohio and participated in a variety of creative and expository writing competitions. Sophomore Victoria Carte's team placed 2nd out of 200 entries in the Writing Games competition. Freshman Elysse Rogers placed third in the Not-so-Trivial-Pursuit competition and sixth place out of more than 500 essays in the Impromptu Writing Contest.

Finally, the most prestigious award of the Festival is the Candace Gay Memorial Essay Contest, where students are expected to evaluate the novels they've read for the competition and respond to a sophisticated prompt in a 3-5-page essay. I'm proud to announce that three of our participants received honorable mention for their essays: Those individuals are Lily AbiNader, Jacinda Caldwell, and Elysse Rogers.

Congratulations to all participants on a job well done.

Ms. Weingartner – English Class News Advanced Placement testing takes place the first two weeks in May. A good night's sleep and healthy breakfast will help students taking any of these tests. Ms. Weingartner will be meeting with next year's AP Composition class after school on May 21st to review summer assignments and expectations for the course. Students will be reading a variety of magazine articles, summarizing each of these into a 1-2 page Word document, and submitting the final products according to the summer schedule. In addition, students will complete a multipart online grammar review with a required minimum of 80% to pass. As always, AP students can contact Ms. W. for extra help or advice on these projects, and the grammar tests can be retaken any time before the first day of school by contacting Ms. W. After taking the AP Composition test on May 13th, Ms. Weingartner's 2015-2016 AP Literature class will be reading a short novel of their choice from a selected list. By modeling expectations and successful techniques for close reading of novels, Ms. W prepares the AP Literature class for their summer assignment: choosing two-three novels from different time periods, students will be given a range of materials, such as background information and study questions, to help them complete each novel. Students will be offered a variety of projects, tests, and other assignments to prove their mastery of the material. These novels will form the basis for the open-ended question on the AP Literature test, so taking detailed notes for review in April-May will be essential to success on the test. The Literature/Composition IV classes are completing a novel unit. Students chose novels of interest to them and will elect whether to take tests or present projects as proof of their mastery of the material. On the last two days of class, students will review for the Literature/Composition IV final exam with Ms. Weingartner posing potential test questions on texts from throughout the year.
