    Master Gardeners Spring Festival Recap

The Master Gardeners held their 20thannual

Spring Festival, the largest all-in-one plant

sale and gardening expo in the area, on

March 8 and 9. The Spring Festival offeredvisitors a chance to speak with Master

Gardeners to gain knowledge on different

    plants and landscaping practices to

implement in their gardens. There were

dozens of vendors selling plants and garden

    accessories along with workshops scheduled

throughout the day on topics like trees,

    tropical fruits, container gardens, and

    composting.

Inside the auditorium was the Kid Zone,

    offering hands-on activities and displays

geared toward younger patrons. A few of

the highlights included a booth on

honeybees and the role they play in

pollinating the food we eat and Science

Savvy, 4-Hs display. Josiah Caswell from

    Happy Homeschoolers and Gabi Sullivan

from Caprine helped out at the Science

Savvy tables, where participants made their

own weathervanes to learn about weather

and climate and pinwheels to learn about

    the power of wind.

Many of our 4-Hers also took part in offering

their plant towing service to festival patrons.

The 4-H office also introduced a fundraiser

where we sold radish cucumber, and

wildflower seeds in small glass bottles in an

effort to raise money for upcoming

    programs.

    Motorola Tech Wizards Program

Marion County 4-H staff, interns, youth and adult volunteers successfully completed the

Motorola Tech Wizard Program. The Motorola 4-H Tech Wizard program is a program thatis grant funded by Motorola. This program is comprised of school enrichment that

combines resources and supplies to facilitate STEM programming during and after school,

at meetings and in the classroom at both South Ocala Elementary and Dr. N.H. Jones

Elementary. This program has been able to successfully reach 790 youth and recruit an

additional 20 teachers/ volunteers to support the program. Youth have the opportunity to

complete 4-H Aerospace curriculum, Weather and Climate Variability curriculum, 4-H Junk

Drawer Robotics curriculum and the Science Discovery Series curriculum as well as a

Tech Wizard program once they began to see how the Motorola 4-H Tech Wizard program

incorporated life skill sets with critical S.T.E.M. abilities. To celebrate the completion of the

program, Marion County 4-H will host a Motorola Tech Wizard summer day camp for

participants to continue to learn and grow as a result of funding provided by Motorola. To

Meet Dortha, Our New Program Assistant!

    Hi 4-H Families,

My name is Dortha Johnston. I come to the 4-H program with years of experience working with

youth. I began my career as a teacher for the Marion County Public School System teaching

elementary and middle school science students. I retired in 2011 but realized my desire to work

was vital to my life. 4-H has given me a new career where I am still able to work with the youth in

    our community.

Some of my interests include: snow skiing, kayaking, reading, volunteering, the beach, traveling to

see family, working in my yard, and more. Probably the most interesting thing I have ever done

was skydiving. I made night jumps, water jumps, participated in a world record wing climb, and

met so many interesting people. I have jumped into school yards, at the celebration of the

expansion of Publix at 40 East, baseball games at CFCC, and much more. I only gave up my jumping

career because of the money I was spending; it is not cheap.

I am honored to be a part of the Marion County UF/IFAS program and look forward to many years

    of service.
