Dear Friends,From the second night of Passoveruntil the night before Shavuot wecount the Omer. This marks theseven weeks between the Exodusfrom Egypt to the time of the givingof the Torah at Mt. Sinai.Counting the Omer is our dailyreminder that the purpose of ourredemption from Egyptian slaverywas for us to serve the one trueGod. We rebelled against anearthly tyrant in order to follow the

instructions of a benevolent God in whose image wewere all fashioned.

As Jews we should strive to incorporate the teachings ofthe Torah into our everyday lives. Jewish traditionshould guide us at work, at school, at home, or any-where we may be. In fact, the word for Jewish Law inHebrew is “Halacha” which comes from the Hebrewword “to walk.” This teaches us that wherever we go,Torah must be our guide.

It is customary for synagogues around the world tospend time studying on the first night of Shavuot to com-memorate the giving of the Torah, God’s greatest gift tothe Jews. Here at Beth El, as we do every year, we willbe conducting our own Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, (our ownTorah Study) immediately following Shabbat Minchaand Ma’ariv beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May23rd. This year we are privileged that my friend andcolleague, Rabbi Mark Bisman (retired spriritual leaderat Har Zion Congregation and currently rabbi emeritusat Congregation Or Tzion) will be teaching a sessioncalled “Standing at Sinai.” I will also teach a class basedon Dennis Prager’s newest volume “The TenCommandments: Still the Best Moral Code.” I hopethat you will join us for some Talmud Torah (TorahStudy) and to help consume the obligatory Shavuotcheesecake.

For those who wish to engage in additional Torah studyin preparation for Shavuot, the Board of Rabbis incooperation with many valley congregations (includingBeth El) will be hosting a pre-holiday Tikkun LeylShavuot at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Center inScottsdale on Thursday night, May 21st beginning at7:00 p.m. The guest speaker will be Rabbi Dvora E.Weisberg, a Talmudic scholar and professor at the LosAngeles campus of Hebrew Union College (Reform). She earned her doctorate in Talmud and Rabbinicsfrom the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York(Conservative). Her topic is: “Seven Weeks Later: TheFour Children Meet Up at Sinai.” She will, in her ownunique and scholarly way, connect the Pesach Seder andthe narrative of the “Four Sons” (or children) to the rev-elation at Sinai.

Arthur LavinskyRabbi

The Torah is a priceless gift to the Jewish People whichoften goes unclaimed. I encourage you to avail your-selves of year round opportunities to study more aboutour faith, our people, our heritage, and our traditions. In recent years, there have been many more opportuni-ties for members of the Jewish community to engage inJewish learning including adult education at Beth ElCongregation, Melton Classes, the Valley Beit Midrash, the Bureau of Jewish Education, Limmud Arizona,Jewish Film Festivals, and much more. While it isimpossible to take advantage of every learning opportu-nity, I encourage everyone to broaden their Jewish hori-zons by opening their mind and their schedules toJewish studies. There is no better time to begin thanwith the arrival of Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, cele-brating the giving of the Torah.

Tradition teaches us that no matter where and when wewere born, we all stood and learned God’s words atMount Sinai together. Let’s have a reunion this yearand renew our commitment to the Torah and toAlmighty God.

L’Shalom,Rabbi Arthur Lavinsky

Shalom,Asking for money is difficult. However, it is part and parcel ofbeing involved in a non-profitorganization. Asking for money isnot something everybody is com-fortable doing, but donating moneyis an obligation for all Jews.

Last month, while making phone calls to solicitsponsorship for our Gala, I experienced a new andheartwarming response from a relatively new mem-ber of our congregation. This person was a longtimemember of another synagogue that no longer existsin Phoenix. Even though this member does notattend services or participate in programs at Beth El,the commitment to support the only non-orthodoxsynagogue in Phoenix is the motivating factor.

This certainly puts fundraising and commitment to acause in a different perspective. Supporting Beth Elis not only one’s cause for personal benefit, butone’s cause for the greater good - for others and forthe continuation of Jewish ritual life and education.Beth El’s continued success is critical to the vibran-cy of Phoenix Jewish life.

Thank you to the chairs of the 2015 Gala, LeisahWoldoff and Helaine Kaplan, for undertaking thehuge task of organizing such a wonderful and suc-cessful event. Thank you to all their committeemembers who made endless phone calls andworked so hard. Thank you to the staff of Beth El,whose dedication and many hours of work is unpar-alleled.

Whatever the reason you donated money and sup-ported the 2015 Gala, thank you very much. Yoursupport will be put to good use for now and for thefuture of our congregation.

Dear Friends,

I can’t believe were going into themonth of May already. On the eastcoast they say “April showers bringMay flowers.” Lucky for us, we haveflowers most of the year, but with themonth of May, generally the heat ison! I can hardly wait (NOT!).

I generally don’t like to look back atwhat was… as we’re not going that

direction. However, I cannot help but to comment onwhat the staff lovingly refers to as our “March Madness.”In doing so, I’m encouraging you to consider joining us asnext year we will repeat some of what we did during thispast March as well as to join us on a regular basis for pro-grams and dinners that are created with you in mind!.

We celebrated Purim and the Megillah reading to startthe month and as you know, the Purim Carnival, theBlood Drive, and Unique Boutique were held on thesame day. I am delighted to tell you that Lori Rizzo did aphenomenal job recruiting donors for the Blood Drive. In fact, I believe she mentioned that there were more abledonors this March than there has been in many of theprevious Blood Drive days. The Carnival was (as always)fun for everyone that attended and the vendors at theUnique Boutique had interesting items on display and tosell.

We honored Norton Goldberg on a Shabbat morning forhis outstanding commitment running the daily minyanim. On that day, he was awarded an “Honorary Membership”at Beth El for his many years of service to the congrega-tion as well as the Kiddush that day in his honor.

The Women’s Seder was our best one yet! It was more aPassover Experience than a traditional Seder, but it waswell attended, and the feedback from the women thatattended was that they really enjoyed the evening. Wehad a taste of some of the typical Passover foods, had funinteractive activities, and enjoyed making charoset, bothtraditional and from around the world. If you were nothere, be sure to join us next year. It’s Beth El fun, withBeth El women and friends, and was a great way to get usready for Passover.

We offered two Shabbat dinners along with the Pizmonsingers from the east coast…..an entertaining group of col-lege students, that brought us beautiful music and abun-dant energy. Finishing out the month was Rabbi JasonMiller, our Scholar in Residence, with his humor andwords of wisdom.

Anne SchaferExecutive Director

I’d like to think you took part in one event or anoth-er during the month. If you were not able to be here, please be sure to mark your calendars for the nexttime…..It brings us together, it makes us community.

L’shalom,Anne

EDUCATION NewsIf you’ve ever done volunteer workyou know that it not only makes oth-ers feel good but makes you feel good, too. Volunteerism can be a fun andfulfilling experience for everyoneinvolved. Not only that, the act ofdoing good deeds, sometimes calledtikkum olam (repairing the world) orgemilut chasadim (acts of loving kind-ness) is a cornerstone of Jewish life.

Another Hebrew term used for a good deed is mitzvah. The more basic meaning of the word though is com-mandment. Among the 613 commandments for Jews inthe Torah are many good deeds. For instance, there isa commandment to “feed the hungry and clothe thenaked,” which you can do by volunteering at a soupkitchen or by donating clothes to a local charity. Andthere’s the commandment to “honor the elderly,”which you can do by visiting a retirement home.

Another commandment is tzedakah. We often use thisword to mean “charity,” but it actually means “right-eousness.” Tzedakah is just not about the act of giving;it’s also about recognizing what others actually need. Some may need money, while others may need yourtime and attention. Tzedakah should be well thoughtout. According to the medieval Jewish scholarMaimonides, the best kind of tzedakah helps others tohelp themselves. As the saying goes: “Give people a fishand they will eat for a day. Teach them to fish and theywill eat for a lifetime.”

Summer has arrived and our schedules have lightenedup. Why not consider gathering the family and performmitzvot in our community? Take a look at the list belowof a few great ideas for projects that are helpful, reward-ing and potentially a lot of fun.

*make your own family tzedakah box*perform at a local retirement home*take the kids and drop off clothing, household goods

or a toy donation at a local shelter*bake brownies at home and take them to a shelter to

serve their treats

On another note, I’d like to personally thank ourTalmud Torah and Youth staff for another fantasticschool year. The energy and skills that they bring toclass to share with your kids is top notch. And to ourgraduating seniors, may college bring you friendships, intense studies, good luck and a continued connectionto our Jewish faith.

The 2015-2016 Talmud Torah school registrationmaterials will be sent home with the final report cardsin late May. You can also locate them on the websitearound that same time.

Until next time….

PRESCHOOL NewsI can’t believe how quickly time has passed, thefascinating learning opportunities we had, and thefun that went along with the growth. We wel-comed new faces and unfortunately, had to saygoodbye to some old friends. It has been a won-derful year and I am sorry to see it coming to anend. I know that the summer will be exciting andthe children who attend will have a wonderfulexperience.

Let’s take a moment to review the programs thatwe offered this past school year. The year started

off with Kabbalat Panim where the children came to meet their teachersand see their friends. We had a lovely morning with a bagel brunch, played with the parachute, and introduced everyone to our new websitedesigned by Ron Woldoff. Thank you for all of your support.

September and October brought all of our fall holidays. We helped todecorate the sukkah, ate in the sukkah, and shook the lulav and etrog.Simchat Torah quickly followed and we enjoyed making flags andmarching in the synagogue. At the end of October we had our fall festi-val where the children made apple rubbings, pretended to ride on hors-es, took a hayride, and met some animals at the petting zoo.

During the year we had many holiday rooms including Thanksgiving,Hanukkah, and Purim. We also celebrated Shabbat together each weekas well at a Tot Shabbat and PJ Havdalah movie night. Thank you tothe Razon and the Woldoff families for their support in making a suc-cessful event.

Passover was also a big hit as Nanci, the Director of Education, playedthe role as Pharaoh. We had a model Seder and a special guest, Nuritcame to play her guitar and share Passover with us.

Linda Feldman, the Bureau of Jewish Education consultant, came to ourschool so that the children could make oil from olives at Hanukkah andMatzah for Passover. Yom Ha’atzmaut and Lag B’Omer were also cel-ebrated by the tasting of foods, dancing, playing, and going on a picnic. How important it is to give the children first hand experiences for ourJewish holidays.

We hosted our families at Grandpersons Day, Papa Bear Pajama Day,and at the Mother’s Day Tea. The children were excited as we got readyfor each of these special events.

Each week we had different themes that lasted throughout the schoolyear. Two of the most popular weeks were Rainbow Week and WackyWeek. During Rainbow Week we focused on a different color everyday, making projects, wearing clothing of that color, eating food of thecolor and so much more. During Wacky Week, each day we did some-thing silly building up to our Purim celebration and carnival. It is price-less to see such joy from our children as they learn and grow from eachexperience.

We finished our year with Water Day and a big celebration. We hadpizza and ice cream at our party and used the bouncy house that was gra-ciously donated by the Witenstein family. I believe that we all had awonderful year. If you have not heard, I am leaving my position as Director of the pre-school as of May 20th. I want to thank you for allowing me to be partof the Beth El Preschool family. Each day I learned something newfrom the children. The insight of a child is amazing. As many of youknow, I live in the East Valley in Chandler and although I would love tocontinue, the distance makes it impossible. The staff that I have workedwith has been wonderful and supportive and I appreciate what they doevery day for our children and the school. Have a fantastic summer!
