ForewordForewordForewordForeword

Dear students and readers,

It is my great honor and pleasure to share my thoughts with you. SHEAC is surely a warm fami-

ly. Not only does it provide a warm place where you can make friends but it also creates a learn-

ing environment where you can grow. I am fortunate to witness and get involved in many activi-

ties, study trips, and workshops here at SHEAC. In the music speeches/workshops I gave at

SHEAC these years, I witnessed the enthusiastic learning attitudes from your eyes. From the

moment I saw your interests and determination on your face in the workshops; I wanted to say

that I am proud of you. I was impressed by your hunger for learning. With elaboration of discus-

sion and the depth of questions you raised in the music workshops, I knew you guys were learn-

ing and growing. Most importantly, you wanted to learn and wanted to be successful.

With great people here at SHEAC, I believe that SHEAC can provide a whole-person develop-

ment environment and prepare you to become a better person. Grabbing every opportunity and

learning experience as much as you can. Wherever you are or whatever you do in the future,

don’t forget you are always part of the SHEAC family.

Best wishes,

Mr. Derrick Anderson and Mr. Vincent Cheng, as

special guests of the High Table Dinner. Dr. Ko is a

professional engineer specialized in artificial intelli-

gence and robotic systems. His research interests

include robot-assisted search and rescue systems,

emergency engineering, appropriate technologies

for humanitarian relief, and emergency water and

sanitation systems. During his speech, Dr. Ko

shared his rich and inspirational volunteer experi-

ences in different developing countries prior to set-

tling in the academic sector. In 2000, Dr. Ko be-

came the first Hong Kong engineer to join Medecins

Sans Frontiers’ field missions. His sharing about his service in South Sudan during the civil war made a deep

impression on students. His humorous way of talking about his experience in building and teaching students

how to build latrines throughout the years also caused a lot of laughter among the audience.

Everyone at the dinner also enjoyed very much the beautiful piano piece “Tears” by student Miss Yan Jiayi.

The atmosphere of the High Table Dinner was pushed to a climax by the recitation of the poems which won

the Love Triplet Poem Competition organized jointly by the Arts and Culture and the Communication Working

Groups of the SHEAC House Association.

Prior to the High Table Dinner, in the late afternoon, the HKU RC delegation led by Dr. Ko also visited SHEAC

and shared their RC and service-learning experiences with a group of SHEAC students. During their visit to

UM earlier of the day, the HKU delegation also had a campus tour on the Hengqin campus, including visits to

the UM Wu Yee Sun Library, the University Hall, and Freshmen’s Colleges. They attended a lunch meeting

with Prof. Iu Vai Pan, Prof. George Watt, Prof. Kenneth Leung, College Masters, respectively, of SHEAC, PJC

Chinandega

several relevant topics. In addition to teachers and stu-

dents from the University of Macau, a group of stu-

dents from Macao Sam Yuk Middle School also joined

this event.

In the beginning, Miss Leung Sze Ki, Abbie, education

oDcer of Oxfam Hong Kong brieEy introduced some

basic information of Oxfam. Oxfam is an NGO aiming

at Fnding solutions to poverty and what it considers as

injustice around the world. It ultimate goal is to enable

people to exercise their rights and manage their own

lives. Oxfam Macao was registered as a non-proFt

group in Macao in 2013. =e Oxfam Grow Festival Se-

ries was held in Macau in the Frst quarter of this year

so as to popularize knowledge about poverty issues

around the globe to Macau residents and students.

“Bananas!*” is a documentary Flm that depicts a real

case in which Nicaragua workers in banana plantation

prosecuted their employer, Dole Food Company, for

compensation of health damage caused by exposure to

pesticides.

Juan Dominguez

This

You probably don’t know that one third of the retail

price of an average banana is for the cost of pesticides

applied on it. All over the world, banana plantation

workers are suering and even dying from the side

eects of these pesticides. Juan Dominguez, a million-

dollar personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, is on his

biggest case ever representing over 10,000 Nicaraguan

banana workers claiming to be aHicted by poisonous

pesticides used by Dole Food and Dow Chemicals.

=e whole region of Chinandega is an ecological disas-

ter zone. =e pesticide spray has left its mark every-

where. =e soil, the water, the animals and the food

are all aected. =e level of pesticides in breast milk is

700 times higher than is acceptable. Some say it will

take 200 years for the ground to heal itself enough to

produce natural crops again.

One of the pesticides, a DBCP-based compound called

Nemagon, was banned in the USA in 1977 for causing

male sterility. Standard Fruit — now Dole — contin-

ued to use the pesticide in its plantations outside the

USA up to 1982.

After a series of Fghts with the defendant, Juan

Dominguez and his team won the litigation and

achieved a milestone in the protection of foreign

workers' right. =is case has great signiFcance on

overseas laborers hired by US companies who suer

from harmful working environments. =is was a battle

between workers from a developing country and a

powerful multinational giant. =e social resources and

Oxfam and SHEAC especially prepared cola, tea and

Hence, Juan and the Nicaraguan workers were very

glad about their victory.

“=is is a nasty case”, the lawyer for defendant claimed

when the movie comes to the end. Majority of the au-

dience, however, disagreed with defendant’s opinion

and responded him with hissing and laughter.

After the screening of the movie, Ms. Daphne Ip from

Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation introduced the

concept of fair trade and discussed with the audience

the ideology behind the movie. =e case of Nicaragua

banana workers was not an isolated case in which a

giant multinational corporation infringed human

rights of laborers in developing countries. It reEects

the fact that some powerful multinationals have the

power to monopolize the production of some com-

modities and thus to control their supplies and prices.

As a result, farmers at the bottom of the production

chain cannot obtain the beneFt they deserve when

facing unfair conditions in this type of employment

relationship.

On one hand, about one eighth of the world popula-

tion are in starvation. Most of them are farmers from

developing countries. On the other hand, 50 largest

food companies controlled 70% of food supply in the

world. Behind the high proFt of the giant corpora-

tions, a lot of scandals were uncovered, such as their

illegal occupancy of public land in rural areas together

with the local government. Fair trade movement pro-

motes a standard on fairness about labor, environment

protection and policy making. It aims to release farm-

ers from vulnerable situations and to enhance their

ability to earn a living in their own right.

Oxfam campaigns ocer Miss Cheng Yi Yi, Debby

pointed out that what we could do as consumers was

to help alleviate injustice in trade by our own actions.

%e concrete measures included purchasing food with

fair trade certi&cation, reducing consumption of meat,

avoiding wasting food, and purchasing seasonal food.

Moreover, we can share the idea of fair trade to our

family and friends. As more people comply with the

goal of fair trade, food production giants may feel the

pressure to take serious account in issues of environ-

mentally friendly practices, elimination of poverty, and

protection of the basic right of workers.

After the sharing session, the audience put forward

some questions and the project ocers from Oxfam

tried to help them obtain a better understanding of the

signi&cance of fair trade and avoiding wasting food.

Oxfam and SHEAC especially prepared cola, tea and

co,ee with fair trade certi&cation for the participants

to taste after the session was &nished.

Oxfam launched the GROW Festival in Macau in

March and April as part of the campaign. %e festival

included educational activities about our responsibili-

ties as global citizens, demonstrating the connection

between the global food system and the things we do

every day, as well as encouraging the public to re1ect

on what they can do in our daily lives, for example,

change their eating habits. Oxfam and SHEAC coordi-

nated to organize the movie screening event, the One-

Eighth Exhibition guided tour and the enzyme work-

shop aiming at helping UM students and sta, to culti-

vate stronger civic awareness, and work together to-

wards a fairer and more sustainable food system for

Hiko

Dennis Wang

EAC Forum: The Collective Memory of the Cultural Revolution

Dr.

Venkatesan

Hindu Female Auspiciousness

Sherry

(Dr. Tak-ching

Cheung)

而在印度,每位女子都是渴望婚姻的,因為婚姻是“A passport for women to heaven”。

collocations dictionary與 Corpus。 Collocation dictionary
