Mr. and Mrs. A,C, SAIL-STAD, who have been enjoyingan extended stay at their Colonycottage, Bali-Hi, will soon bereturning to the island after aweek's tour of Florida.

The old schoolhouse wasrocking with old tunes recentlywhen Ruth and Phillip Hunter hada square dance and discoveredthere is plenty of spring leftin the step of sedentary Island-ers.. It was a special treat todance to the Hunters* collec-tion of Ed Durlacher records.Known as King of Square Dance,he did the calling on the Ameri-can Common at the World'sFair.

Former Sanibel Elementaryteacher, NANCY McCANN hasjust returned from her trip toEurope, and will ho doubt havean interesting account for usnext time.

ISABELL and DAN MAS-land of Camp Hill, Pa., whohave a vacation home on Cap-tiva Island, have been searchingfor a junonla for six years. Atleast, Mrs, Masiand has, wewere told by MARY K. CUN-NINGHAM of Captiva, This lasttrip, Mary said, Isabell lookedfor one every day, dredgedevery day, hoped every daywithout luck, Due to leave theIslands on Sunday, she thoughtshe'd give it one last try Sat-urday morning-—and found ajunonia thirty feet from her C ap-tiva doorstep at 6 a.m. in goodconditionf

What Mary didn't tell us (wehad to find out from someoneelse) is that she herself felt sobadly about Mrs. Masland's lackof luck, she gave her a junoniaon Friday••—which obviouslyturned the tide as a good luckshell!

WONDERFUL PEOPLE

Mr. and Mrs. Carl F.Koelmel of East Stroudsburg,Pa., wrote a letter extolling thevirtues of three wonderful Is-land gentlemen, whom they metthrough Mary K. Cunningham ofC aptiva Island.

The gentlemen in questionare Don Carpenter and SamNugent, with whom the Keel-mels went shelling, and BussHammel, who offered to babysitwith the Koelmels' two children,Mark, 9, and Debbie, 6. "UncleBuss," as the children calledMm, took the children exploringover the Islands and then pliedthem with edible goodies tillthey could hardly move.

When they started into UncleBuss's home, he gave the chil-dren the door key, which theyjust couldn't get to work. Hesuggested that perhaps theywould have better success ifthey used the "magic words"(which were, of course, opensesame!) and the door swungopen. The children just know itwas because of the words.

When all had returned home,Uncle Buss sent the children apoem, which they and theirparents hope you'H enjoy asmuch as they did.

C aptiva - SanibelA.D. 1966

Debbie and Mark and Buss arefriends,

Since they all came down with"Sanibel Bends."

The shells eagerly wait forDebbie to come,

And the ones she rejects becometerribly glum.

When the fish sight Mark theysigh "Woe is me"

And hurriedly swim out to thedeep sea.

The fun we've had was good forall three

Now we travel on so"Open Seasame!"

/ s / Just Us.

In the letter which containedthe copy of the poem, Mrs.Keelmel said " T h i s is ourfourth year here on the Islands

and each time we arrange tobe here when Uncle Buss isvacationing here also. Heg r e e t e d our youngsters thisyear with a big hug for eachand, of c o u r s e , his e x t r a'goodies' tha t he always has tohand out,

"But most of all are theinteresting tid-bits which he hasto impart to the children, whicha r e giving them a wealth ofknowledge; for this man has sucha beautiful soul and exceptionalkeen mind, not to mention thewarmth and friendliness he con-stantly radiates . . ,"

SANIBEL OLD DAYS

Back during the winter sea-son, the I s l a n d e r printed alovely story about the housenow occupied by Dotti Booker, and her shop, Dotti*s of San-ibel. Dotti later passed on tous a letter written to her byMrs. William Muir of Paris,Ontario, Canada, who use tolive in that very same house.

After writing that she hadwondered about the new owners, she said she had a few cor-rections for the story,

"My father," she wrote,"took up the homestead in thefall (or summer) of 1890 andthe house was completed abouta year later. He also. builtTarpon Bay Road.

"His family when he camehere consisted of four teen-aged children and a new wife.(Not so new though, as they weremarried in 1888.) My brotherand I were born after the familygot settled on the Island.

"My father sold it to theBruers in 1913... We got $6,000for the house {in not too goodcondition) surrounded by 160acres of finest farmland. Therewere three tenant houses on theplace,

"My husband and I expectto be in Fort Myers in Januaryand February of 1967. I havemany notes on the early historyof the Island residents and Ihope to live long enought towrite up the history.. / '

We hope she does, tooit would be fascinating reading.

TO MEXICO WITH LOVE

Exposition Press in NewYork has released "To MexicovVith Love," authored by JohnB. Hail of Fort Myers Beach,

The book is entertaining andamusing the saga of John B,,his wife Ruthie, and their FordOscar's three month sojournto and in San Miguel de Al-lende (by way of Pittsburg, yet!)

One becomes well aquaintedwith many characters, Mexicanand U.S.A,ers (not the least ofwhom are the author and hisfamily—Oscar is definately amember) and a true flavor ofour nsiehbor to the south.

"To Mexico With Love" is

NOT the usual run-of-the-milltravel book, but if you're ven-turing southwards, we imagineit would be a good idea to haveit handy for the useful hints onrestaurants and places to go-—if you're not planning to go toMexico, the book would still befun to read.

But whether you want to goto Mexico or not,-when vou fin-ish "To Mexico With "Love,"you wiE probably want to meetand know the author, his wifeand Ms car. We do,
